IT HARDLY IS NEWS THAT THE EMERGENCE IN THE ASIA/PACIFIC REGION of multinational low-cost carriers modeled on the leading LCCs in North America and Europe has transformed and reinvigorated the inter-Asia travel market. But while most of the attention is focused on the impact these upstarts are having on major network/flag carriers, a less public battle is going on as Asia's niche airlines - SilkAir, Nok Air and Bangkok Airways, for example - find their space being challenged by the low-fare wave as well.
Neither full-service nor LCC, this band of carriers has fulfilled a role somewhat analogous to the holiday and charter airline segment in Europe, albeit on a much smaller scale. Some are standalone entities plying short-haul routes with turboprop and small jet aircraft. Others exist as part of a major airline organization, flying the last leg of a transcontinental journey into an Asia/Pacific vacation destination. The question is how long they can continue in their role in the face of changing travel patterns and consumer behavior brought on by LCCs, the Internet and rising GDPs.
A key year for them is 2015, when Southeast Asia's Open Sky Agreement comes into effect, allowing unlimited flights to all 10 ASEAN members: Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. Any protections they enjoy from restrictive bilaterals will disappear and they will be fully exposed to aggressive competition from today's batch of LCCs and future new entrants.
Perhaps Thailand presents the best microcosm of the wider challenges facing niche airlines. When Thai AirAsia was launched in 2004 with the political support of the government, Thai International Airways, itself government-owned, responded by establishing Nok Air, in which it holds a controlling 39% stake. But as so often happens in such situations (think
British Airways
and Go or Continental Airlines and CALite), Nok Air and its parent were more at war with each other than with the new entrant. While Thai AirAsia has come from nothing to operate a fleet of 19 new Airbus A320s serving 24 domestic and international destinations, Nok Air has just 10 aging Boeing 737-400s and two ATR 72s serving 17 domestic points.
The future for Nok may be a bit rosier. CEO Patee Sarasin told eTN in 2009 that the airline, which at the time was carrying fewer than 2 million passengers a year, had "buried the hatchet" with its owner and the two now had common goals. "It is true that we had difficulties in the past to cooperate as we lacked a common vision," he said. "We are now ready to cooperate again."
Prior to the makeup, Thai was considering selling its interest in Nok or assuming 100% control to make it a more effective competitor to Thai AirAsia, although in actuality a takeover might not have been possible owing to the refusal of other shareholders to sell. Part of the new agreement was a realignmen.
Finnair
Finnair is Finland's flag carrier airline and biggest airline. It is headquartered in Vantaa, Finland and its main hub is Helsinki-Vantaa Airport. Finnair and its subsidiaries dominate air travel within Finland and to global destinations. The Government of Finland owns 55.8% of Finnair. It has two cargo subsidiaries and is a member of the Oneworld airline alliance. Finnair operates flights to destinations in Asia, North America, and Europe from its Helsinki hub.
Southwest Airlines
Southwest Airlines is a major US airline and the largest low-cost carrier in the world. It has over 46,000 employees and operates over 3,400 flights per day to 89 destinations in 42 states and Puerto Rico. Southwest operates an all-Boeing 737 fleet, with over 500 Boeing 737 aircraft in service, making it the largest operator of the 737 worldwide. In 2011, Southwest acquired AirTran Airways and is in the process of fully integrating the two airlines, with the goal of having a single operating certificate by 2014.

China Eastern Airlines

IT HARDLY IS NEWS THAT THE EMERGENCE IN THE ASIA/PACIFIC REGION of multinational low-cost carriers modeled on the leading LCCs in North America and Europe has transformed and reinvigorated the inter-Asia travel market. But while most of the attention is focused on the impact these upstarts are having on major network/flag carriers, a less public battle is going on as Asia's niche airlines - SilkAir, Nok Air and Bangkok Airways, for example - find their space being challenged by the low-fare wave as well.
Neither full-service nor LCC, this band of carriers has fulfilled a role somewhat analogous to the holiday and charter airline segment in Europe, albeit on a much smaller scale. Some are standalone entities plying short-haul routes with turboprop and small jet aircraft. Others exist as part of a major airline organization, flying the last leg of a transcontinental journey into an Asia/Pacific vacation destination. The question is how long they can continue in their role in the face of changing travel patterns and consumer behavior brought on by LCCs, the Internet and rising GDPs.
A key year for them is 2015, when Southeast Asia's Open Sky Agreement comes into effect, allowing unlimited flights to all 10 ASEAN members: Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. Any protections they enjoy from restrictive bilaterals will disappear and they will be fully exposed to aggressive competition from today's batch of LCCs and future new entrants.
Perhaps Thailand presents the best microcosm of the wider challenges facing niche airlines. When Thai AirAsia was launched in 2004 with the political support of the government, Thai International Airways, itself government-owned, responded by establishing Nok Air, in which it holds a controlling 39% stake. But as so often happens in such situations (think
British Airways
and Go or Continental Airlines and CALite), Nok Air and its parent were more at war with each other than with the new entrant. While Thai AirAsia has come from nothing to operate a fleet of 19 new Airbus A320s serving 24 domestic and international destinations, Nok Air has just 10 aging Boeing 737-400s and two ATR 72s serving 17 domestic points.
The future for Nok may be a bit rosier. CEO Patee Sarasin told eTN in 2009 that the airline, which at the time was carrying fewer than 2 million passengers a year, had "buried the hatchet" with its owner and the two now had common goals. "It is true that we had difficulties in the past to cooperate as we lacked a common vision," he said. "We are now ready to cooperate again."
Prior to the makeup, Thai was considering selling its interest in Nok or assuming 100% control to make it a more effective competitor to Thai AirAsia, although in actuality a takeover might not have been possible owing to the refusal of other shareholders to sell. Part of the new agreement was a realignmen.
Finnair
Finnair is Finland's flag carrier airline and biggest airline. It is headquartered in Vantaa, Finland and its main hub is Helsinki-Vantaa Airport. Finnair and its subsidiaries dominate air travel within Finland and to global destinations. The Government of Finland owns 55.8% of Finnair. It has two cargo subsidiaries and is a member of the Oneworld airline alliance. Finnair operates flights to destinations in Asia, North America, and Europe from its Helsinki hub.
Southwest Airlines
Southwest Airlines is a major US airline and the largest low-cost carrier in the world. It has over 46,000 employees and operates over 3,400 flights per day to 89 destinations in 42 states and Puerto Rico. Southwest operates an all-Boeing 737 fleet, with over 500 Boeing 737 aircraft in service, making it the largest operator of the 737 worldwide. In 2011, Southwest acquired AirTran Airways and is in the process of fully integrating the two airlines, with the goal of having a single operating certificate by 2014.
Wizz Air
Benedict Gombocz is a Hungarian low-cost airline headquartered at Budapest Liszt Ferenc International Airport. It uses minor airports throughout Europe and Asia to serve 32 countries. The airline was founded in 2003 and has the largest fleet of any Hungarian airline, consisting mainly of Airbus A320 and A321 aircraft. It carried over 11 million passengers in 2011 and has operating bases across Central and Eastern Europe while Poland remains its biggest market.

Morocco has been ruled by a series of Muslim dynasties since the 8th century. It gained independence from France in 1956 and is now a constitutional monarchy with the king as head of state. Morocco's government includes a bicameral parliament and constitutional monarchy. The country is located in North Africa and borders the North Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea. Morocco has a population of over 33 million people and its largest ethnic groups are Arab-Berber. The official languages are Arabic and Berber.

After World War I, the United Kingdom established the semi-autonomous state of Transjordan which gained independence in 1946 as the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. Jordan lost control of the West Bank to Israel after the 1967 Six-Day War and its long-time ruler King Hussein signed a peace treaty with Israel in 1994, permanently surrendering Jordanian claims to the West Bank. Jordan is a relatively small country located in the Middle East between Israel, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Syria, and the West Bank, with a population of over 10 million people mostly concentrated in the capital of Amman in the northwest.

Iceland was originally settled by Norse and Celtic immigrants in the 9th-10th centuries AD. It established the world's oldest existing legislative assembly, the Althingi, in 930 AD. Iceland gained independence from Norway and Denmark in the early 20th century. The island's economy depends highly on industries like fishing and tourism. Iceland has a unitary parliamentary republic government and is known for its natural beauty, literacy rate, and Nordic social policies.

Operates both domestic and international passenger services, primarily from its hub at Sheremetyevo International Airport in Moscow. One of the world’s oldest airlines; traces its origins back to 1923. Was the national airline of the Soviet Union and the world’s biggest airline during the Soviet period. Has, after the collapse of the U.S.S.R., turned from a stateowned enterprise into a semi-privatised company ranking 19th most profitable in the world in 2007. Is still viewed as Russia’s de facto national airline. 51% of Aeroflot is owned by the Russian Government. Has embarked on a fleet upgrading programme, extensive route change, and an image overhaul. Joined SkyTeam in April 2006, during which it became the alliance’s tenth member.

- 4. Aeroflot: Key people and Ownership Key people: Aeroflot’s CEO position is occupied by Vitaly Savelyev as of December 2013. Savelyev was nominated on 10 April 2009, succeeding Valery Okulov. Even though Savelyev’s nomination was only supposed to last until April 2014, Russia’s government extended it to another five years. Ownership: As of December 2013, 51% of Aeroflot is state-run.
