This document summarizes a mobile news app project created through collaboration between journalism and computer science students. The project led to the creation of an app called AzteCast for the campus which launched in 2012 and had over 2,000 downloads. It provided news and events for students. The app was later adopted by the university's student life department but ceased operations in 2014 due to budget issues. The project resulted in research publications, new collaborations between academic departments, and jobs for students in mobile development. It provides tips for starting a similar project, including identifying platforms, hosting, and recruiting students in advance; and incorporating community outreach, strategic assignments, guest speakers, and innovative tools into the class.

In the last two years, OB3 has been used to build ePortfolios for reflective practice in an MBA programme, and professional certification in a Midwifery programme. During the workshop, attendees will learn how to build an OB3 reflective practice portfolio. They will learn how to 1) capture their thoughts in writing, audio recordings, video, photos, hyperlinks, etc. to reflect on development areas; 2) keep private and personal records of their reflections as they happen; 3) email content and any attachments from their mobile devices directly to their portfolio; and 4) share selected sections of their reflections with other people as part of a course or co-creation for understanding project.

In 2016 the Centre for English Teaching (CET) launched Blackboard for its university pathway courses (DEC) as part of an initiative to innovate and transform them into high quality blended Academic English language programs that would support students in developing both academic skills and awareness of the technology and systems required to excel during the first semester at university. While LMS use is standard practice in higher education, for the English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students (ELICOS) sector the integration of an online platform is still new territory and there is great potential for innovation within teaching and learning practices. Moreover, the unique context allows for a fresh perspective on how Blackboard, at its core, is a dynamic and flexible platform in teaching and learning practices that fosters communities of practice and consolidates traditional educational practices.
The implementation of Blackboard across university pathways courses at CET faced two major hurdles. To begin with, international students were less familiar with the culture and expectations surrounding LMS use at tertiary level and the nature of independent learning. Secondly, teaching staff had varying degrees of proficiency and experience in using technology in the classroom. Dealing with the challenge of educating, immersing and empowering both teachers and students simultaneously in their use of Blackboard as an integrated and powerful tool in teaching and learning raised numerous questions and helped gain valuable insights into adoption and adaption of technology and the opportunity for creative disruption. Grounding innovations in solid pedagogy, integrating technology and independent learning with in-class interaction and making learning objectives clear to both students and teachers enabled the successful uptake of Blackboard and allowed for greater support and autonomy for both teachers and students.
Our research goes back to first principles about what good assessment and feedback looks like at this point in the 21st century.
Prof David Nicol, who developed the widely used REAP (re-engineering assessment practice) principles, will join us to discuss how his current thinking is evolving.
We will discuss David’s findings in the context of our landscape review and look at how this group may help take the work forward.

As the demand for blended and online learning opportunities increases, so does the need to ensure the quality of online education through faculty development programming. And with the increase in the diffusion of blended and online programming across higher education institutions, stakeholders are looking for ways to ensure the quality of the student experience and better understand the impact on student outcomes. Recently, many of us have been asked to provide evidence of the effectiveness of our faculty development programming: administrators are looking for a return on investment in faculty development to ensure quality in blended and online programming, as we are seeing decreases in state funding and enrollments, which leads to cut budgets. In order to for us to determine the effectiveness of our programming using a backwards design approach, we need to first understand what is a good online or blended course as well as what competencies are required of faculty to teach blended and online courses and how those can be best facilitated in a faculty development program. Then we can consider how to evaluate the impact on student outcomes.
This workshop will offer a collaborative and interactive opportunity to connect with colleagues to consider and construct how the effectiveness of faculty development programming can be determined and disseminated. A model of evaluation for a faculty development program will be shared.

Many Information and Library Schools have responded to this demand by introducing more UX coursework into their curriculum, but the proliferation of agile software development and lean product design has incentivized organizations to look for experienced individuals for UX roles, even those that are considered entry-level. As a result, aspiring information professionals face a paradoxical situation in which they are required to have UX experience before they can gain UX experience. This article provides an assessment of one institution's efforts to overcome this experience gap by offering opportunities for students to participate in three types of authentic client-facing UX projects. Through surveys of students and clients served over four academic years, we provide a set of lessons learned and recommended best practices for incorporating project-based learning opportunities into UX courses.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry.
