This document discusses optimizing energy efficiency in buildings. It notes that most of a building's energy consumption is determined early in the design process. Buildings account for around 40% of total energy consumption and 36% of CO2 emissions in Europe. Up to 73% reduction of energy consumption can be achieved through refurbishing existing buildings, as more than a quarter of buildings in 2050 have yet to be built. A new software called A+E:3D allows architects to run energy calculations early in the design process to optimize efficiency according to regulations and receives feedback on options.
