Thank you for giving me the opportunity to provide you with an update and overview of the PMI Educational Foundation and demonstrate how you can advance the project management profession. I’ll also talk about how we are advocating the power of project management for students, teachers, and for use in local communities to make a difference in the lives of others – especially youth (maybe even your own children), teachers, and nonprofit organizations. This presentation will be a short 15 minutes, after which I’ll take questions. If we don’t have time to get to all of the questions, please feel to hand me your business card as you break for lunch so I may follow up with you later.
Founded in 1990, the PMI Educational Foundation is the philanthropic arm of PMI and a separately incorporated 501 C 3 nonprofit charitable organization under US tax code. While PMI is a membership association focused on making project management indispensible for business results, the PMI Educational Foundation (a public charity) helps to leverage project management for social good. Let’s talk about some differences and similarities in the vision of our profession and in the work of PMI and the PMI Educational Foundation. Both organizations are focused on the value, application and practice of project management and both organizations support the PMI Strategic Plan. PMI views project management through the lens of a professional competency and is focused primarily on the needs of the 20 million project management practitioners around the world, their employers, and their suppliers. The PMI Educational Foundation views project management through the lens of a critical skill for everyone in society and is focused on the 7 billion people around the world who are unfamiliar with project management. As a public charity, the PMIEF is focused on bringing the power of project management to the rest of society. The Foundation is primarily a grant giving organization, but in some situations facilitates the creation of programs and educational resources. The extent of grant giving is dependent upon its ability to raise funds for its programs and its operations.
The work of the PMIEF isn’t isolated in its own sphere. The PMIEF actively works to build bridges into the project management profession. PMIEF curriculum engages young learners in primary and secondary school in learning project management and other subjects through project-centered learning in fun, energetic ways – through parties, theatre, or robotics, for example - as a way to develop critical 21 st century skills that equip a future workforce ready for immediate employment or for employment after graduating from college and ready to join the project management profession -- or other professions -- with project management capabilities. PMIEF is also working within some industries not reached by PMI to build bridges and bring those groups into our profession: primary and secondary school teachers, disaster relief, and other non-profit organizations. The PMIEF envisions a world where responses to disasters, other emergency needs, and general daily situations allow nonprofits and NGO’s to embrace, value and utilize project management and attribute their success to it because they are now able to use their donor dollars more effectively and efficiently to meet the needs of their beneficiaries. The PMIEF also has real life experience where youngsters, knowing how to plan and execute a project successfully in their world, now are enjoying school more, have fewer missed school days, and are more likely to graduate. These project management students are workforce, college, and/or career ready. Through PMIEF scholarships, students have the resources to go to college and study PM. Their teachers didn’t learn PM in college, so some learn PM through PMIEF scholarships, as a band-aid measure. We know the long term fix is working with teacher’s colleges to establish project management coursework for teaching through projects.
The PMI Educational foundation is working everyday in these three program areas: We are building a better prepared society and giving youth and communities a better chance of success through training programs for teachers, youth and local schools. This is our fastest growing area of focus. Studies show that many new employees do not have the skills essential for job success such as teamwork, collaboration, communication, and leadership. The skills needed to be a successful employee are also the same core skills of project management. And we believe that Project management is both a professional competency for teachers and a skill that they can teach in the classroom. To support this area of focus, we have helped develop project management workshops for teachers, programs for schools, and training scholarships for teachers. We have also developed educational resources for primary and secondary students, which I’ll highlight in a minute. And we provide training scholarships for teachers. - We are building a better prepared workforce by helping college students realize their dreams through academic scholarships, doctoral research grants and student paper awards. Scholarships are one of the Foundation’s oldest programs. Over the past five years, we have expanded the number of and value the scholarships and added a doctoral research grant. This is the area that may resonate most closely with all of you. Please let your contacts know about these scholarships. Although, we administer more than 40 scholarships, at least 12 of them are available to any student going to school anywhere in the world. For instance, the Dr. Harold Kerzner scholarships sponsored by the International Institute for Learning, consists of four cash scholarships annually of US$7,500 each. - We are building a better prepared response in future times of need and improving responses to tragedies by training nonprofit and nongovernmental organizations to be more effective and efficient through the use of project management. We accomplish this through training scholarships to non-profit and nongovernmental organizations as well as the creation of educational resources. For instance, we recently funded the creation of a workshop for nonprofits on using project management. And we are eagerly awaiting a practicum for nonprofit organizations. For these organizations, an improvement in project management effectiveness and efficiency is expected to lead to more lives being saved and more people being fed, clothed, and housed.
In addition to all of our scholarships and awards, we also offer financial grants to other organizations for project management related programs. During the past 3 years, the Foundation has grown tremendously and you can see from this graph that we’ve grown from awarding under $50,000 to almost $500,000 in grants, scholarships, and awards.
In addition to monetary awards, the Foundation also collaborates with other entities. For instance, last year we were invited to participate in two US state committees to develop secondary school curriculums - statewide. This demonstrate that educators are recognizing the value of project management as a skill that can help prepare their students to complete in 21 st century work force. The State of North Carolina is developing a series of four project management courses and reached out to the Foundation for help. We quickly pulled together a volunteer team to help. These volunteers are from three PMI North Carolina Chapters, The State of North Carolina is part of the Southern Regional Education Board, a coalition of 16 states that develop curriculum and training resources. There is potential that the project management program could adopted by all of the 16 states. In addition to the creation of these four courses, the Foundation has recommended that the State work with us to create a training program for their teachers. Washington State has adopted a Project Management Framework that would be incorporated into the state’s Career and Technical Education programs. The framework is based on PMBOK and incorporates PMI principles. More recently, a few education departments in other countries are now thinking about project management curricula for their school systems. These programs provide a wonderful opportunity to teach youth an important life skill.
As noted earlier, we provide educational resources for others to use. These resources are at no cost as long as you use them for non-commercial use. In other words, please do not sell them and do not charge for your time when you take them into your community. This slide shows a sampling of those educational resources available for download at pmief.org at no cost for non-commercial use. These resources are downloaded hundreds of times each year and growing. Recently, those who are downloading these materials and we are finding quite a few college students who download for school projects. We have seen significant growth in the use of PMIEF materials by individuals and PMI chapters as well as significant growth in the influence of PMIEF in getting project management recognized as a life skill. (mouse click) For instance the PM Skills for Life was downloaded nearly 150 times by individuals from 33 countries since early February -- interestingly, half of the time by PMI members and half of the time by non-PMI members. This download rate is much greater than the total 263 copies downloaded by individuals in 58 countries between July and December of 2010. Collectively, these resources have been downloaded more than 700 times between 1 January and 25 March 2011. These numbers do not include the number of downloads of resources which PMI chapters provide to PMIEF for sharing on the PMIEF website, for example, PMI Northern Italy Chapter’s “Project Our Theater”, a popular resource for primary schools. PM Skills for Life has contributed significant value to the PMIEF and programs for social good. PM Skills for Life is being used by PMI and non PMI organizations all over the world. Here is a sampling of some of the usages: · In the Boy Scouts · Junior Achievement Program in Chicago · A youth program with Public Color in New York City · A youth program with Children International for children in dire poverty in the Dominican Republic. This has been integrated into a leadership program and was translated in Spanish for the program · The Sao Paulo Chapter used this with an Brazilian NGO that has programs for physically disabled citizens · The Mumbai Chapter used this in a program for NGO training in India
What is unique about the PMI Educational Foundation is the ability to multiply the effect of its donations by making products directly available on its website for …… for no-cost download for non-commercial use. And, what is also unique is the generosity of PMI chapters who allow their products focused on helping society through PM be made available on the PMIEF web site. PMIEF seeks partnering opportunities with major charitable and service organizations who have the capability to expand the use of PMIEF products. Our ability to accomplish this is directly related to the support of others since most of our products are developed though grants. This map is sampling of that work. Since the creation of the map earlier this year, our educational resources have been used in many more countries. And growing everyday! Like PMI, PMIEF is headquartered in the USA, but has had impact throughout the world. Here is a sampling of how all PMIEF resources, grants, awards, and scholarships have been used around the globe both by PMI members and non-PMI members. Since early 2010 when this map was created, we have seen an expanded use of PMIEF resources around the globe.
As I stated earlier, the PMI Educational Foundation is focused on being a grant-giving organization which only happens because of the generous support of others. The Foundation is able to accomplish only as much as we have the funds to support. We are very appreciative of all of the gifts we receive. So we try to recognize and thank our donors. Here are some of our major donors. In 2006 The PMI Board of Directors made a matching gift contribution toward fundraising and operations of the foundation to encourage others to make contributions. It was quickly followed by a gift from IIL of $1 Million to fund four Dr. Harold Kerzner Scholarships of US$7,500 annually and primary and secondary education project as well as the new Kerzner Award. Another major commitments were received from the University of Management and Technology, Cheetah Learning, Cadence Management Corporation, the PMI Arabian Gulf Chapter and the PMI Minnesota Chapter.
These PMI chapters also made significant contributions along with McBride Consulting Group, Inc. a business partner of Cheetah Learning. In addition to these donors, more than 30 other PMI Chapters support the charitable activities of PMIEF as well as hundreds of individuals from around the globe.
As we are continuously adding new pPlease consider signing up for the Foundation’s monthly e-newsletter so you can keep up to date with all the latest news!
There are a number of ways in you can bring the power of project, program, and portfolio management to your communicate by engaging with the PMI Educational Foundation or by doing it on your own.
