Potato scab is a bacterial disease caused by Streptomyces scabies bacteria that live in the soil. The bacteria infect potato crops as tubers start to develop, causing unsightly lesions on the potatoes. No single measure provides effective control, but an integrated approach combining host resistance and cultural controls can manage the disease. Maintaining moist soil and acidic conditions between pH 5.0-5.2 during tuber development inhibits infection and reduces disease severity. Crop rotation is also important to reduce soil inoculum levels.
