Why	Using	Emotion	&	Emphasis?
3
Emotion	&	Emphasis	Help	Presenters	Highlight	Important
Information
4
Examples	of	emotion	/	emphasis	words:
The	CRITICAL takeaway	is…
I	am	SO	EXCITED	to	tell	you	about...
There	are	THREE	IMPORTANT	REASONS why…
To	Use	Emotion	Effectively,	Presenters	Must	Alter	Their
Voice	Tone	to	Highlight	Certain	Words
Practice: Read	the	following	example	out	load.	Stress	the	words	in
orange	to	add	emotion	to	the	example.
Example:
Today	is	a	big	day	for	our	company.	We	are	very	excited to
announce	our	new	cell	phone	product.	The	product	has	lots	of
great	features,	including	a	bigger	screen,	a	better	camera,	and
more	memory.	But	in	my	opinion,	the	best	new	feature is	the
voice	activated	commands.
5
Ask	the	student	to	read	the
example.	Make	sure	the	student
uses	voice	tone	to	emphasize	the
words	in	orange.

2 Tips	For	Using	Emotion	&	Emphasis	Effectively
6
Use	emphasis	to reveal	important	information
Don’t	use	emphasis	too	often
Emphasize	the	words	that	directly	precede	important	information.
e.g.,	“The	most	important	pointsare	A,	B,	and	C.
The	more	times	you	use	emphasis	during	a	presentation,	the	less
powerful	it	becomes.
Limit	the	use	of	emphasis	to	highlight	only	the	most	important
points	/	information.
Preparing	For	Your	Presentation
7
Spend	30	minutes	preparing	for	your	SkimaTalk session.
1. Review the	presentation	&	sample	presentation
notes	for	this	course (pages	9	– 15).
2. Identify	the	words	that	you	think	can	be	used	to
emphasize	the	most	important	information	in	the
presentation.
3. Practice delivering	the	revised	presentation	notes	in
front	of	a	mirror.	Be	sure	to	emphasize	the	words
you	identified	in	step	2.
Are	You	Ready?
8
Teacher	Instructions:
1.	Listen	to	the	student	deliver	the	full	presentation	without	interruption.
2.	During	the	presentation,	write	down	the	areas	where	the	student	could	have	added
emphasis	or	emotion.	To	assist	you,	we	have	highlighted suggested	points	of	emphasis	in
red	text	in	the	teacher	version	of	the	presentation	notes.
3.	Ask	the	student	the	following	questions:
à “Did	you	find	this	exercise	easy	or	difficult? Why?”
à “Do	you	have	any	questions	about	how	to	use	emotion	or	emphasis?”
4.	Review	the	areas	where	the	student	could	have	added	emphasis	/	emotion.

12Fictional	data
l Today	is	a	very	special	day.
l Our	company	dedicates	itself	to	building	the	best	electronics	products	in	the
world.	And	today	we	are	excited	to	announce	that	all	of	that	hard	work	has
paid	off.
l Today	we	are	are	announcing	our	new	Model	Q	smartphone.
Overview
Sample	Presentation	Notes:	Slide	2
13Fictional	data
l The	Model	Q	is	a	revolutionary	new	smartphone.
l The	phone	has	many	“best	in	class”	features.	Today	I	am	going	to	cover	the
features	that	we	think	are	truly	revolutionary.
l The	most	revolutionary	feature	of	the	Model	Q	is	the	Voice	Activated
Commands.
o Simply	speak	a	command	to	your	phone,	and	it	will	perform	an	action.
l Another	revolutionary	feature	is	the	new	high-resolution,	5”	screen.
o This	screen	is	bigger,	brighter,	and	clearer	than	any	screen	on	the	market.
It	is	amazing!
l The	final	revolutionary	feature	of	the	Model	Q	is	the	new	camera.
o The	camera	has	higher	resolution,	better	zoom,	and	quicker	focus	than
any	smartphone	in	the	world.	You	can	take	professional	photographs
with	this	camera!
The	Model	Q	is	revolutionary	with	lots	of	“best	in	class”	features
Sample	Presentation	Notes:	Slide	3
14Fictional	data
l The	Model	Q	is	simply	the	best	value	in	the	world.
l For	less	than	half	the	price	of	other	leading	phones,	you	get	better	features
and	better	support.
l But	most	important,	you	get	a	phone	that	is	backed	by	our	guarantee.	If	you
are	not	happy,	for	any	reason,	you	can	return	your	phone	for	a	full	refund.
That’s	our	100%	satisfaction	guarantee!
The	most	exciting	thing	about	the	Model	Q	is	the	value	for	the	money
Discussion
15
For	Discussion:	Example	#1
16
Read	the	argument	below	and	discuss	which	words	you	could
emphasize	to	make	the	argument	more	powerful
Argument:Wine	is	better	than	beer
People	often	argue	about	which	drink	is	better:	wine	or	beer?	I	am	here	to	tell
you	that	I	think	wine	is	better.
There	are	many	reasons	why	wine	is	better	than	beer.	But	the	most	important
reason for	me	is	taste.	While	beer	is	usually	bitter,	wine	is	very	flavorful.
Wine	is	also	easier	to	drink	than	beer	because	it	isn’t	as	heavy.	Beer	makes	you
feel	full	and	bloated,	while	wine	does	not.
Finally,	drinking wine	is	fun	because	each	bottle	of	wine	is	unique.	If	you	don’t
like	wine,	I	beg	you	to	give	it	another	try.	I	promise	you	won’t	be	disappointed!
Ask	the	student	to	read	the	full	argument.	Then	discuss	where	you	might	add
emphasis.	We	have	highlighted suggested	emphasis	words	in	red	text.
For	Discussion:	Example	#2	(time	permitting)
17
Read	the	argument	below	and	discuss	which	words	you	could
emphasize	to	make	the	argument	more	powerful
Argument: Skiing	is	a	fun	sport
I am	so	excitedto	tell	you	about	the	sport	of	skiing.	Skiing	is	a	great	sport	for
many	reasons.
First,	skiing	is	a	great	way	to	get	outside, get	exercise,	and	spend	time	with
friends	and	family.	Second,	skiing	is	an	opportunity to	visit	many	beautiful
places	such	as	the	Alps	in	Switzerland	and	the	Rocky	Mountains	in	the	United
States.	Finally,	and	most	important,	skiing	is	fun	because	you	get	a	big
adrenaline	rush	when	you	ski	fast!
If	you	have	never	skied	before,	I	highly	recommend	you	give	it	a	try!
Ask	the	student	to	read	the	full	argument.	Then	discuss	where	you	might	add
emphasis.	We	have	highlighted suggested	emphasis	words	in	red	text.
