This document discusses the history and development of automated driving technologies from the 1930s to present day. It notes some of the early concepts from General Motors in the 1930s and research by industrial organizations in the 1950s exploring automated vehicle control through mechanical systems and radio controls. It then outlines increasing research interest from the 1960s onward as computer technologies advanced, allowing for lateral and longitudinal vehicle control as well as traffic management. This research continued through the 1980s and 1990s from organizations like GM, DOT and UC Berkeley PATH, although funding for fully automated highway programs was withdrawn in 1997. Research in this area continues today with a focus on nearer-term technologies.
