3. INTRODUCTION
 Osteomyelitis is an infection of the bone
caused by bacteria traveling to bone
through various channels .
 Osteomyelitis is most common in
children and especially occurs at long
bones of arms, legs and vertebrae .

4. TYPES OF OSTIOMYELITIS
 Acute Osteomyelitis
 Fever
 Bone pain
 Swelling
 Dizziness
 Chronic Osteomyelitis
 Bone pain
 Swelling
 Pus Formation
 Skin color change

5. CAUSES
 Osteomyelitis is caused by staphylococcus
aureus .
 Staphylococcus is commonly found in skin
and blood .

6. RISK FACTORS
 Urinary tract infection
 Chronic steroid use
 HIV ( Human immunodeficiency virus )
 Diabetes
 Hemodialysis
 Deep wound in bone
 Orthopedic surgery

7. PATHOPHYSIOLOGY
Bacteria enter in the body
Through blood stream Direct through open wound
From blood circulation or open wound
bacteria spread to bone

Infection takes place
Immune system will get activated and
neutrophils travel to infection
point to kill bacteria
Infection is strong , dead neutrophils
accumulate and causes abscess

 Biopsy

10. TREATMENT
 Medication
 Draining
 Debridement
 Restoring Blood Flow
 Removal of foreign particles
 Amputation

11. MEDICAL MANAGEMENT
 Long term antibiotic therapy is the
treatment of choice for patient .
 Infection in the bone tissue is difficult
to resolve & may require weeks to
months of medications like penicillin ,
tetracycline , etc…
