Aditya-L1: India's Solar Mission
GS3: Science and Technology
Introduction:
● Conceived in January 2008 by the Advisory Committee for Space
Research
● Will be placed at Lagrange point 1 (L1) Positioned 1.5 million
kilometers from Earth
● Launched using Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) XL
● Will take Approx. 109 Earth days to reach L1 orbit
Payloads on Aditya-L1
● Visible Line Emission Coronagraph (VLEC): For Imaging and spectroscopy of the corona.
● Solar Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (SUIT): Captures images of the photosphere and chromosphere in both
narrow and broadband ultraviolet.
● Solar Low Energy X-ray Spectrometer (SoLEXS): Performs soft X-ray spectroscopy, observing the Sun as a star.
● Aditya Solar wind Particle Experiment (ASPEX): Analyzes solar wind and particles, including protons and
heavier ions, with directional capabilities.
● High Energy L1 Orbiting X-ray Spectrometer
(HEL1OS): Conducts hard X-ray spectroscopy
to observe the Sun as a star.
● Plasma Analyser Package for Aditya (PAPA):
Studies solar wind and particles, including
electrons and heavier ions, with directional
measurements.
● Advanced Tri-axial High-Resolution Digital
Magnetometers: Measures the in-situ magnetic
field in three dimensions (Bx, By, and Bz).
Objectives of Aditya-L1
● Investigate the dynamics of the upper solar
atmosphere, with a focus on the chromosphere and
corona.
● Research the processes associated with
chromospheric and coronal heating, as well as the
physics of partially ionized plasma. This includes the
study of phenomena like coronal mass ejections
(CMEs) and solar flares.
● Gather in-situ data on particles and plasma in the
solar environment to enhance our understanding of
particle dynamics originating from the Sun.
● Map the magnetic field topology and collect magnetic
field measurements within the solar corona.
● Examine the drivers for space weather, encompassing
the origin, composition, and dynamics of the solar
wind.
Lagrange Points :
● Lagrange Points, also known as L-points, are
locations in space where gravitational forces
create equilibrium.
● The concept was developed by Italian - French
mathematician Joseph-Louis Lagrange in the
late 18th century.
● There are 5 such points from L1 to L5
Other Solar Missions:
● DSCOVR (2015) - NOAA (USA):
o Objective: Monitor solar wind, coronal mass ejections, and Earth's climate.
● Parker Solar Probe (2018-2025) - NASA:
o Objective: Close-range study of the solar corona, gather data on the Sun's
outer atmosphere, and study the solar wind.
● Solar Orbiter (2020) - ESA:
o Objective: Study solar and heliospheric physics, providing insights into the Sun's
behavior and its effects on the solar system.
● CuSP (2022) - NASA
o Objective: Study particles and magnetic fields in the solar environment,
deepening our understanding of the Sun's magnetic dynamics and solar wind
interactions.

ADITYA-L1 MISSION

  • 1. Aditya-L1: India's Solar Mission GS3: Science and Technology
  • 2. Introduction: ● Conceived in January 2008 by the Advisory Committee for Space Research ● Will be placed at Lagrange point 1 (L1) Positioned 1.5 million kilometers from Earth ● Launched using Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) XL ● Will take Approx. 109 Earth days to reach L1 orbit
  • 3. Payloads on Aditya-L1 ● Visible Line Emission Coronagraph (VLEC): For Imaging and spectroscopy of the corona. ● Solar Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (SUIT): Captures images of the photosphere and chromosphere in both narrow and broadband ultraviolet. ● Solar Low Energy X-ray Spectrometer (SoLEXS): Performs soft X-ray spectroscopy, observing the Sun as a star. ● Aditya Solar wind Particle Experiment (ASPEX): Analyzes solar wind and particles, including protons and heavier ions, with directional capabilities. ● High Energy L1 Orbiting X-ray Spectrometer (HEL1OS): Conducts hard X-ray spectroscopy to observe the Sun as a star. ● Plasma Analyser Package for Aditya (PAPA): Studies solar wind and particles, including electrons and heavier ions, with directional measurements. ● Advanced Tri-axial High-Resolution Digital Magnetometers: Measures the in-situ magnetic field in three dimensions (Bx, By, and Bz).
  • 4. Objectives of Aditya-L1 ● Investigate the dynamics of the upper solar atmosphere, with a focus on the chromosphere and corona. ● Research the processes associated with chromospheric and coronal heating, as well as the physics of partially ionized plasma. This includes the study of phenomena like coronal mass ejections (CMEs) and solar flares. ● Gather in-situ data on particles and plasma in the solar environment to enhance our understanding of particle dynamics originating from the Sun. ● Map the magnetic field topology and collect magnetic field measurements within the solar corona. ● Examine the drivers for space weather, encompassing the origin, composition, and dynamics of the solar wind.
  • 5. Lagrange Points : ● Lagrange Points, also known as L-points, are locations in space where gravitational forces create equilibrium. ● The concept was developed by Italian - French mathematician Joseph-Louis Lagrange in the late 18th century. ● There are 5 such points from L1 to L5
  • 6. Other Solar Missions: ● DSCOVR (2015) - NOAA (USA): o Objective: Monitor solar wind, coronal mass ejections, and Earth's climate. ● Parker Solar Probe (2018-2025) - NASA: o Objective: Close-range study of the solar corona, gather data on the Sun's outer atmosphere, and study the solar wind. ● Solar Orbiter (2020) - ESA: o Objective: Study solar and heliospheric physics, providing insights into the Sun's behavior and its effects on the solar system. ● CuSP (2022) - NASA o Objective: Study particles and magnetic fields in the solar environment, deepening our understanding of the Sun's magnetic dynamics and solar wind interactions.
