How effective is the combination of your main
product and ancillary texts?
Majority of media products are advertised
in many different ways; also known as 360
branding. Similar to what I have attempted
to do; by creating a horror trailer, which is
accompanied by a film poster and
magazine cover. When doing 360 branding,
you need to keep in mind that all the
media texts must be alike, so that the
audience can associate them with each
other.
The antagonist plays an important role
when it comes to things such as 360
branding. As they are the most
recognisable character within the film. I
had to take this in mind when creating my
trailer, as I wanted my antagonist to
feature within all three of my tasks; trailer,
poster and magazine.
In my work, I wanted the antagonist to be
the centre of attention. Although within
my trailer she doesn’t have as much screen
time as the other characters. I still believe
that she is still the main attraction, through
the way she perceived. She comes across
as quite scary and mysterious as she is just
seen standing shadily within the forest.
Then finally at the end of the trailer she is
screaming.
The setting/location also plays an important
role when it comes to 360 branding. As the
location is what sets the tone of the film. The
same location needs to feature on the
poster, magazine and in the trailer; so that it
is instantly recognisable to the audience.
This makes such a huge relationship between
the trailer and the poster, as it allows the
audience to make the connection between
the two instantly and it makes the poster
very distinctive.
In my work, I made sure that I kept the
location the same with the trailer, poster
and magazine cover. Majority of my trailer
is set in a forest and a park, so when
designing the plans for my poster and
magazine I kept that in mind. On my poster
the location is set in a park; the antagonist
is sat on a swing. Yet on my magazine, all
my characters are standing in a forest,
which is where my trailer is set too.
The typography within the horror film
needs to be instantly recognisable to the
audience; especially the title and font. As
its the one thing that is going to appear
within the trailer and on the posters,
magazines and other advertisements.
Other typographies include logos and
symbols.
When creating my poster, I needed to
decide on a good font, which not only
looked nice on the poster but also was
really unique and instantly recognisable for
the audience. I used a software named
Indesign to create my poster. When
searching for a font on Indesign there
wasn’t a wide range to choose from and I
found that they all looked quite similar and
dull.
I used a website named freefonts.com to
download a font which I liked. When
looking for a good font, I wanted a simple
yet creepy looking one. I came across one
that I thought would look perfect. I had the
same font featuring on my poster,
magazine and trailer. By doing this, I am
creating a title which the audience can
associate with my film. I feel my title is very
unique and stands out against any other
fonts I have seen on film posters.
