Activity 1
Let’s Say for Stance: Assess your reading habit. How is your reading habit since you start to be
in-delved with reading? What are the different reading materials you usually read when you were
in elementary, high school, and until college? Have they changed a lot? Based on your personal
assessment, on which “stance” do you belong? Explain your answer in an essay form.
Activity 2
Devising the Devices: Read Sonnet 80 by William Shakespeare and answer the questions follow:
Sonnet 80
By William Shakespeare
1. O! how I faint when I of you do write,
2. Knowing a better spirit doth use your name,
3. And in the praise thereof spends all his might,
4. To make me tongue-tied speaking of your fame.
5. But since your worth, wide as the ocean is,
6. The humble as the proudest sail doth bear,
7. My saucy bark, inferior far to his,
8. On your broad main doth wilfully appear.
9. Your shallowest help will hold me up afloat,
10. Whilst he upon your soundless deep doth ride;
11. Or, being wrecked, I am a worthless boat,
12. He of tall building, and of goodly pride:
13. Then if he thrive and I be cast away,
14. The worst was this, my love was my decay.
A. Who is the speaker in the poem? What do you think is the tone of the voice of the
speaker?
B. In line number 14, what is the connotative meaning of the “tall building”?
C. In terms of imagery, what is the idea that the poem wants to convey? Explain that idea?
D. In lines 11 and 12, the speaker compare himself to a boat and the other persona to a tall
building, what does it imply?
E. The poem is a sonnet, what is the structure of a sonnet?
F. In general, what is the theme of the poem?
Activity 3

Literary Texts Number 1 (Short Story)
Dino the Crippled (An Excerpt)
By NMN
One day in a school where everyone _____________________ (simile), there is one
student who _____________________(metaphor). Unlike any other children in the school, Dino
is ________________ (irony). He has only one leg. He is using a thick stick that helps him to
stand.
Dino feels so sad every time he goes to school _____________________________ (anti-
thesis). He eats all alone. He studies on his own. No one wants to have him as his group mate
because they are avoiding taking care of him.
It is not new to him ever since his parents decided to transfer him in his present school a
month ago.
One time, it was English Month in their school. All the students in their English class are
required to participate in the contest like Choral Reading, Interpretative Song, Declamation,
Singing, Quiz Bee, and Writing. He was not chosen in the first three contests

You _______________ (oxymoron); Oh! Should you care?
You __________________ (simile); You are worth the strife.
I __________________ (pun) to show I am real.

Activity 1
Group Yourself LitCrit: Complete the matrix below by grouping the different literary
approaches. The name for each group is already given in the matrix. On the second column,
enumerate the literary approaches and on the third column, explain the reason for grouping those
literary approaches. Take note: The literary approaches may appear again in other group/s.
Literary Approaches Group Literary Approaches Reason for Grouping
A. Social(approaches in
studying the society)
B. Psychological(approaches
in understanding the
psychology reflected in the
text)
C. Cultural (approaches in
learning about culture)
D. Forms(approaches when
studying the structure of
the literary work)
Activity 2
Critically Acclaimed: The table below presents the synopsis of the selected literary works. Based
on your understanding of the texts, identify the appropriate critical approaches applicable to them.
Provide justification on your answer.
Synopsis Appropriate Critical Justification
Approach
1. Julia Salas, the protagonist woman in the
story “Dead Stars”, projects strong will and
makeswise and firm decision when she
chose to let go of Alfredo Salar.
2. Nick Joaquin’s “Summer Solstice”
projects conflict between Christianity and
pagan practice which can be observed on
how the people celebrate “Tadtarin
Festival” alongside with “Feast of St. John”.
3. Claro Recto’s “Shadow and Solitude”
portrays the dark fate of the protagonist
woman who died for being sorrowful. This
fate objectifies the meaning of “shadow” as
death and “solitude” as the sadness felt by
the woman that results to her death.
4. Jose Garcia Villa’s poems are comprised
of free verses that contain vivid descriptions
of the subject of his poem.
5. The main character in Bienvenido
Santos’s “The Day the Dancers Came”,
FilemonAcayen, who lives in American for
more than 20 years, develops a sense of
identity as Filipino yearning for his land, but
seemed trying to change his thought when
other Filipinos ignore him abroad.
On Insights!
The Critique In Me:Form a group with four to five members. The groups will choose short
stories from the Philippine Literature. Analyze the story using the given guide questions.
Present your analysisin the class.
Dead Stars by Paz Marquez-Benitez
May Day Eve by NVM Gonzales
Summer Solstice by NVM Gonzales
1. On Feminist view, how do the female main charaters portrayed?
2. In the context of Marxism, what social realities are reflected?
3. Analyze the actions of the main characters based on their psychological well-
being. Identify atleast two characters.
4. Using Reader-Response Criticism, survey among the members of your group on what
have they discovered about themselves after reading the literary work.
5. Analyze the form of the literary work according to the style of the writer, the choice
of words, the plot structure, and the characters and their characterization.
