Literary Elements
   In ‘’The House on Mango Street’’ Cisneros’ uses a
    series of different literary devices. For Example, she
    uses sound devices, figurative language,
    symbolism, and imagery.
   Examples: Simile. ‘’…she was pretty like my
    mother(Pg.70)
   Alliteration: ‘’…crumples like a coat and
    cries.(Pg.68)
   Symbolism: The writing on Pg.74 was a symbol for
    freedom.
   Imagery: ‘’Good to look at. In her Joan Crawford
    dress and swimmer’s legs.
Grammatical Choices
Structural Elements
   During the three vignettes Cisneros' uses compare and
    contrast. She keeps the vignettes similar by speaking
    about endless hardships.
   Compare:
   Examples: ‘’The First Job.’’ Esperanaza went to work and
    was sexually harassed.
   ‘’Papa who wakes up tired in the dark.’’ Esperanza’s
    Aubuelo(Grandfather) Dies and her Papa takes it hard.
   ‘’Born bad.’’ Esperanza and her sister made fun of her aunt
    who died later that day.
   Contrast: Each of the vignettes have a specific meaning
    or message to convey to the readers.

   In ‘’The First Job’’ Esperanza tried to make her life
    better by getting , but this only creates another
    problem for her.
   In ‘’Papa Who Wakes Up Tired in the Dark,’’ she
    allows her readers to see that her dad, who's
    supposed to be brave , broke down crying and
    she had no idea what she was supposed to do
    because she was only a child.
