Wooden tongue is a chronic infectious disease of cattle caused by inflammation of the soft tissue of the head, especially the tongue. Adult cattle fed coarse feeds are predisposed to the disease, which is characterized by swelling of the tongue with round yellow lesions, difficulty eating, and swollen lymph nodes. Treatment involves intravenous injections of sodium iodide followed by a course of intramuscular streptomycin injections over 5 days.
