Migration from SQL to MongoDB - A Case Study at TheKnot.com MongoDB
8 out of 10 couples use TheKnot.com to help plan their wedding. A key part of planning involves selecting articles, photographs, and other resources and storing these in the user's Favorites. Recently we migrated major parts of our technology stack to open source technologies. As part of our migration strategy, we zeroed in on MongoDB, since it better suited our requirements for speed and data structure as well as eliminating the need for a caching layer. The transition required a period in which both our legacy and new API where working concurrently with data being persisted on both databases (SQL and Mongo) and all records were being synched with every request. We resourced to many strategies and applications to achieve this goal, including: Pentaho, AWS SQS and SNS, a queue messenger system and some proprietary ruby gems. In this session we will review our strategy and some of the lessons we learned about successfully migrating with zero downtime.
How did you know this Ad will be relevant for me?!Rocket Fuel Inc.
Predicting the most relevant ad at any point in time for every individual is how Rocket Fuel optimizes ROI for an advertiser. One of the factors influencing this prediction is a consumer's online interactions and behavioral profile. With more than 45 billion interactions being processed daily, this data runs into several Petabytes in our Hadoop warehouse. Running machine-learning algorithms and Artificial Intelligence on this vast scale requires many practical issues to be addressed. First, behavioral patterns are shortlived, so to accurately reflect the tendencies of a consumer, we need to curate and refresh his or her profiles as quickly as possible while avoiding multiple scans over the raw data and dealing with issues like transient system outages. Second, we must address the difficulty of building models utilizing behavioral profiles without overwhelming our Hadoop cluster. At this scale, frequent refreshes of several models can place an undue burden on even a thousand-node cluster. In this talk, we will dive into (a) the practical challenges involved in designing a highly scalable and efficient solution to build behavioral profiles using Hadoop framework and (b) techniques for ensuring reliability and availability of mission critical machine learning pipelines.
Maintaining large-scale distributed systems is a herculean task and Hadoop is no exception. The scale and velocity that we operate at Rocket Fuel presents a unique challenge. We observed 5 fold PB growth in our data and 5 fold number of machines, all in just a year’s time. As Hadoop became a critical infrastructure at Rocket Fuel, we had to ensure scale and high availability so our reporting, data mining, and machine learning could continue to excel. We also had to ensure business continuity with disaster recovery plans in the face of this drastic growth. In this presentation, we will discuss what worked well for us and what we learned 9the hard way). Specifically, we will (a) describe how we automated installation and dynamic configuration using Puppet and InfraDB (b) describe the performance tuning for scaling Hadoop (c) talk about the good, bad, and ugly of scheduling and multi-tenancy (d) detail some of the hard-fought issues (e) brief our Business-Continuity Plans and Disaster Recovery (f) touch upon how we monitor our Monster Hadoop cluster, and finally, (g) share our experience of Yarn-at-Scale at Rocket Fuel.

How to improve your wordpress performance and speed up your website more than 700% faster!
Drupal is a powerful and flexible platform to build websites with rich funcionalities without building almost anything from scratch. This flexibility brought by the usage of a powerful framework and the work of a super active community can abstract people to understand what is Drupal doing behind the scenes.
Most of performance talks regarding Drupal focus on aspects like infrastructure changes, caching strategies, and comparison of performance between modules or platforms. Unfortunately when performance problems occur, development teams also follow several strategies to replace several aspects in their platforms, jump directly to look for slow queries before trying really to understand where is the bottleneck.
However, most of the times what really needs to be done is to look to what the application is doing and understanding why is it taking so long to do it. Drupal is a platform used by million of websites worldwide and its performance is easy to measure and compare.
At Acquia we have done dozens of performance assessments, and even if we usually face the same problems, sometimes we found weird situations that are only possible to be detected when measured. Measuring and profiling is the only way to understand performance problems in a site and provide valid fixes.
In this talk I will explain how to detect problems regarding performance in Drupal, using simple modules like devel, profilers like XhProf and looking to logs to understand the impact done on the application.

My Site is slow - Drupal Camp London 2013hernanibf
Drupal is a powerful and flexible tool to create web applications without building everything from scratch. This ability can drive developers to build complex websites without understanding what is Drupal doing behind the scenes.
The majority of Drupal performance talks mostly focus in aspects like infrastructure changes, caching strategies or comparisons between modules and architectures. Unfortunately when performance problems occur, development teams also follow strategies to replace different aspects of the platform looking only to standard aspects like slow queries without understanding and profiling the real problem.
The majority of times it is fundamental to measure and analyze what is the application is actually doing to understand te real problems. Drupal is a platform used by million of websites worlwide and its performance can in most cases be compared after measured.
In Acquia we do dozens of performance assessments per year, and even in most clients we find the same problems, often we find situations that only can be detected when measured and analized when looking to a profiler report.
In this session, I will explain how to detect performance problems looking to simple data, from logs to profiler data and providing some nice targets that can be analyzed to understand what is causing the uncommon bad performance of a site.

"Your customer data flows faster each day, which is why collecting, organizing, and doing something meaningful with it is just good business.
But, it can be tough to do.
Stashing data in different places across your organization to come back (hopefully) later is a great way to mismanage or lose it. Squirrels can stash, but enterprises can’t.
You need a customer data platform (CDP). A central command center that securely holds your customer data and lets you organize it according to your goals.
The thing is, what’s best for you? A CDP out-of-the-box? Building a customer data solution yourself? There’s merit in both options, and this webinar is here to help you narrow down what’s best for your business. Acquia, Bounteous, and Appnovation will show you:
How a single source for customer data storage can mitigate risk and optimize customer experience
How central data governance will help your customer data strategy once the almighty Google takes away cookies
The comprehensive CDP build-or-buy checklist + CDP must-haves for your budget
First-party data management that keeps your customers' data safe and your business booming
It’s 10 PM, do you know where your data is?"

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
Speakers:
Bob Boule
Robert Boule is a technology enthusiast with PASSION for technology and making things work along with a knack for helping others understand how things work. He comes with around 20 years of solution engineering experience in application security, software continuous delivery, and SaaS platforms. Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

Experience tuned for abandonment
- New network service. Public beta as of today. Free for everyone to try and use.
- Drupal’s built-in search is good for small sites, but as soon your site gets bigger, search is often one of the first problems: quality of the results is not as good and it often creates a performance and scalability issue that affects your entire site.
- Hard to fix in PHP, search is a really hard problem. Technical challenges: fast and quality results. Demonstrated by market size.
