An acoustic neuroma is a non-cancerous tumor that develops on the main nerve leading from the inner ear to the brain. It causes hearing loss, tinnitus, and a loss of balance over time if not treated. Surgery to remove the tumor is usually the best treatment option to stop further hearing and balance problems from developing.

This seminar is presented as a part of weekly journal club and seminar regularly conducted at Apollo hospital,Kolkata Department of Radiation oncology.
Gamma knife radiosurgery
1) Gamma Knife radiosurgery is a non-invasive procedure that uses focused beams of gamma radiation to treat tumors and other brain disorders without the need for surgery.
2) The Gamma Knife machine uses 201 cobalt-60 sources arranged in a hemispherical pattern to deliver beams of radiation that converge at a focal point within the brain where the tumor is located.
3) During treatment, a stereotactic frame is attached to the patient's head to precisely position their brain at the focal point, and radiation is delivered in a single session that usually lasts 2-4 hours allowing patients to go home the same day.
Neurofibroma
Neurofibroma is a type of benign tumor that can develop on nerve sheaths known as cutaneous neurofibromas. Trigeminal neuralgia presentation
Trigeminal neuralgia is a condition caused by compression of the trigeminal nerve, most commonly the superior cerebellar artery compressing the nerve root entry zone. It results in severe unilateral facial pain that is brief but recurrent, affecting one or more branches of the trigeminal nerve. The right side of the face is more commonly involved than the left. While the pain is severe, it typically only lasts seconds to minutes per episode. Left untreated, it can cause extreme suffering and some patients have attempted suicide due to the agony.
Acoustic neuroma
The translabrynthine approach is used to surgically remove vestibular schwannomas. It provides the most direct exposure of the cerebellopontine angle but results in total hearing loss. The key steps involve complete mastoidectomy and labyrinthectomy to access the internal auditory canal. This allows for identification and preservation of the facial nerve while fully exposing the tumor for removal. Though it sacrifices any residual hearing, it allows for quick recovery and excellent postoperative facial nerve function outcomes.
Neurofibromatosis
Neurofibromatosis (NF) is a genetic disorder that causes tumors to form in the nervous system. There are two main types, NF1 and NF2. NF1 is caused by a mutation on chromosome 17 and affects nerve cell growth, while NF2 is caused by a mutation on chromosome 22 and affects tumor suppression. TRIGEMINAL NEURALGIA
This document discusses trigeminal neuralgia, a neuropathic pain condition that causes severe, sporadic facial pain. It provides information on:

Trigeminal neuralgia presentation
Trigeminal neuralgia is a condition caused by compression of the trigeminal nerve, most commonly the superior cerebellar artery compressing the nerve root entry zone. It results in severe unilateral facial pain that is brief but recurrent, affecting one or more branches of the trigeminal nerve. The right side of the face is more commonly involved than the left. While the pain is severe, it typically only lasts seconds to minutes per episode. Left untreated, it can cause extreme suffering and some patients have attempted suicide due to the agony.
Acoustic neuroma
The translabrynthine approach is used to surgically remove vestibular schwannomas. It provides the most direct exposure of the cerebellopontine angle but results in total hearing loss. The key steps involve complete mastoidectomy and labyrinthectomy to access the internal auditory canal. This allows for identification and preservation of the facial nerve while fully exposing the tumor for removal. Though it sacrifices any residual hearing, it allows for quick recovery and excellent postoperative facial nerve function outcomes.
Neurofibromatosis
Neurofibromatosis (NF) is a genetic disorder that causes tumors to form in the nervous system. There are two main types, NF1 and NF2. NF1 is caused by a mutation on chromosome 17 and affects nerve cell growth, while NF2 is caused by a mutation on chromosome 22 and affects tumor suppression. The main symptoms and characteristics of each type are described. Both types are inherited in an autosomal dominant pattern and can be passed down through families. There is no cure for NF, and treatment focuses on surgically removing tumors when possible.
