Acknowledgment
in the workplace.

Still think recognition isn’t a priority?
What you don’t know will hurt
you and your bottom line.
In the investigation into the Shuttle Disaster in which seven people died it was
stated "the agency's willingness to continue flying without fixing these problems is
part of a failed organizational culture that must be fixed if the shuttle is to return safely
to flight. NASA engineers, they say, are too willing to assume the best, in order to keep
the shuttle flying and control costs" (Reported in the Orlando Sentinel 27/8/3)
HELLO!
  We all crave
acknowledgement,
 recognition, and
     respect.
We strive to have some
 kind of significance
     in this world.
The ostrich has one of the
most advanced immune
systems known to mankind.
Acknowledgment,
deactivates and
reduces the effect
of jealousy and
envy....
Studies show, 82% of
employees rate feeling
valued and appreciated by
their employer as the single
most important aspect of
their working lives.
A leading UK company
found that 47% of
employees cited lack
of recognition and
praise as a major
reason for leaving
the organization.
With workplace so
focused on productivity,
the need of employees to
be recognized for their
efforts is now greater
than ever.
The Gallup Organization surveyed
more than 4 million people on
this subject, with shocking results..
An estimated 22 million workers are presently
"actively disengaged," or extremely negative in
                their workplace.
This costs the U.S.
 economy up to $300
billion dollars a year in
      productivity.
An underestimate because it does
not take into account absence,
illness, and other problems that
result when workers are disengaged
from their work and their companies.
In a study of professional service firms, the Hay
Group found that offices with engaged employees
were up to 43% more productive, based on a
comparison of revenue generation.
A 2005 Watson Wyatt study found that
companies with an effective recognition program
realized a median return to shareholders that is
nearly double those of companies without such
programs.
So why is this happening?
Have you done an ego check lately?
In the well-known book "Good to Great" Jim Collins
identifies humility and modesty as the central quality
that allows a CEO to achieve greatness in business.
Do you have difficulty
praising others? Take a
moment to think, why?
Remember this is one of the most
important aspect of a leader's
communication repertoire.
To see things in the seed, that is genius",
said Lao-tzu.
When we believe in others we support their
higher vision of themselves to succeed.

A few acknowledgement tips..
Avoid using the word “BUT”
   That was great, but.
Make it about them, not about you, and be
specific.

I really liked the report you did, good job. -
Too much opinion, not enough specifics.

The report you completed was well thought
out, concise and easy to understand.
It really helped us speed things up this month
and made things more efficient.
Acknowledgement must be sincere and
truthful. It must be more than what Kegan
and Lacey refer to as the “customary praising,
stroking and handing out warm fuzzies and
attaboys” (Kegan and Lacy, 2001).
When leaders give
Acknowledgement,
Everyone Wins.

the hand that gives roses." -
