This document discusses Jainism's teachings of non-violence and interdependence of all life. It defines veganism as avoiding all animal products including meat, eggs and dairy. It provides examples of common foods that contain hidden animal ingredients like gelatin. Alternatives to animal products are suggested such as soy or almond milk. Taking small steps towards a more plant-based diet like being vegan one day a week is encouraged. Resources for learning more about veganism are provided.

Editor's Notes
Gelatin - collagen mainly inside pig skin (hide) and cattle bones. It is commonly used as a gelling agent in food, pharmaceuticals, photography, and cosmetic manufacturing. Lanolin - wool wax or wool grease, is a yellow waxy substance secreted by the glands of wool-bearing animals. Lanolin and its many derivatives are used extensively in products designed for the protection, treatment and beautification of human skin. Rennet - is a complex of enzymes produced in any mammalian stomach, and is often used in the production of cheese. Whey - is the liquid remaining after milk has been curdled and strained. It is a by-product of the manufacture of cheese or casein and has several commercial uses. Casein - proteins are commonly found in mammalian milk. Casein has a wide variety of uses, from being a major component of cheese, to use as a food additive, to a binder for safety matches. Carmine ( Crimson Lake , Cochineal , Natural Red 4 , C.I. 75470 , or E120) - is a pigment of a bright-red color obtained from the aluminum salt of carminic acid, which is produced by some scale insects, such as the cochineal scale and the Polish cochineal, and is used as a general term for a particularly deep-red color of the same name. Carmine is used in the manufacture of artificial flowers, paints, crimson ink, rouge, and other cosmetics, and is routinely added to food products such as yogurt and certain brands of juice, the most notable ones being those of the ruby-red variety. Shellac - is a resin secreted by the female lac bug, on trees in the forests of India and Thailand. It is processed and sold as dry flakes, which are dissolved in ethyl alcohol to make liquid shellac, which is used as a brush-on colorant, food glaze and wood finish.
