Acanthamoeba are protozoan parasites that can cause infections in humans and animals. There are three genera that cause disease - Acanthamoeba, Balamuthia, and Naegleria. Acanthamoeba can cause chronic granulomatous amoebic encephalitis (GAE) of the brain or Acanthamoeba keratitis of the eye. It exists in trophozoite and cyst forms and has a life cycle involving primary infection through the skin/eyes/inhalation, followed by hematogenous spread to target organs like the brain or cornea. GAE presents with neurological symptoms while keratitis presents with eye pain and vision changes
