This document summarizes the results of a survey about the effects of mass media on OFWs (overseas Filipino workers). The survey found that: - Internet was the most commonly used form of mass media, likely because not all OFWs have access to TV and radio abroad. - Mass media was used primarily as a source of knowledge about current events and other topics. - Perceived negative effects included the potential for misinformation, bias in reporting, and wasting of time. Some also noted a decline in human interaction due to increased virtual communication. - Overall, respondents saw slightly more positive than negative effects, with an average weighted rating of 3.67 out of 5. 13. ANALYSIS
Most OFW use internet as a major form of mass media because not like every
Filipino household not everyone abroad will have a TV or radio. Newspaper will
not also be so relevant as it will feature local news of the host country.
Based on the result collected it is also evident that mass media is being use as a
source of knowledge, in current events and other topics.
The negative effects are mostly coming from the fear of misinformation and
biased reporting. While others consider it as a time waster (spend a lot of time).
Another concern that was raised was the decline of human to human interaction
as the communication is actually shifting virtually as well.
Overall the survey result still reflect a slight lean of mass media towards the
positive side with a weighted average of 3.67.
Given the different views of the respondents I still think that mass media effect
will vary based on how the consumer of knowledge will intake the information
that mass media will provide.
