The ABC’s of Mrs. Shelton’s Class

*A quick guide to rules and procedures for our class.

A is for Absences Please make sure that your child comes to school as often as
            Absences:
possible. If your child does miss a day please call the office and report the
absence. I am more than happy to put together missed homework, but it is often
hard to explain work we have completed in class.
B is for Bathroom Breaks I allow students to use the bathroom when they need
                      Breaks:
to at appropriate times. I usually ask students to wait five minutes before and
after a recess break. All students know that using the restroom is one of their
recess jobs.
C is for Classroom Economy Your student will be taking part in a classroom
                       Economy:
economy project throughout the school year. Each week students will work to
earn our class money by performing class jobs, turning in assignments, and being
strong community members. Once a month we will have a class store where
students will be able to use their earnings to “purchase” items of their choice.
D is for Drivers Many of our field trips this year will require parent drivers. If
            Drivers:
you are interested in helping with one or more of our trips, please make sure that
you have been cleared by the office this school year at least one week before the
field trip.
E is for Everyday We are continuing Accelerated Reading this school year and
             veryday:
           Everyday
it will be expected that your child spend at least 20 minutes reading towards their
AR goal every night. I am always willing to help here in the classroom with
quizzing and picking out books, but your help is needed at home as well.
F is for Folders: Your student will come home with a nightly homework folder
           Folders
that will contain important notes and homework. Please make sure you check the
folder each day and send back any necessary papers the next day.
G is for Grading Your student will receive letter grades this year on their
            Grading:
report cards. My grading scale is as follows:
       98% – 100% = A+ 77% - 79% = C+
       94% – 97% = A 74% - 76% = C
       90% – 93% = A- 70% - 73% = C-
       87% – 89% = B+ 67% - 69% = D+
       84% - 86% = B 64% - 66% = D
       80% - 83% = B- 60% - 63% = D-
                                         59% and below = F
H is for Homework Student’s will have homework Monday through Thursday
           Homework:
night. Homework usually consists of two pages of math and a page or two of
spelling. About once a week students will come home with their reading books to
read aloud their story. Reading books need to be returned the next day to
school. If a student returns all of their homework for the day they will receive a
sticker on our homework chart. If a student brings in their homework everyday in
a week they will have the opportunity to play Homeworkopoly!
L is for Library We will be going to the library this school year and working on
           Library:
our AR (Accelerated Reader) goals. Please help your student remember to bring
their library books to school each day so that they always have an opportunity to
read!
M is for Messages I will be constant contact via e-mail messages and notes
            Messages:
home. If you receive a phone message, e-mail message, or note from me, it’s not
always a bad thing. Sometimes I even want to let you know how great your
student is doing ☺.
N is for News Students will be responsible for finding and writing about a
            News:
current event every other week. Students can use a newspaper, magazine, or
online article for their current events. Current events will be given on Mondays
and due by Friday.
O is for Orders We will be doing book orders throughout the school year. I
            Orders:
will usually allow 2 to 3 weeks for book orders to come back if you’re interested
in taking part. Book orders are never mandatory, and I offer them to increase
interest levels and reading for pleasure.
P is for Paragraph of Week Every other week your student will come home
                         Week:
with a different topic to write on for their paragraph of the week. Please read
over the guidelines carefully with your student and send back the completed
assignment by the following Friday.
R is for Reports Students will have numerous reports and projects due
          Reports:
throughout the year. I will always send detailed information home with your
student and give at least a month to complete. Please ask me questions as soon
as they arise so that I can clarify if need be.
S is for Setting Limits Setting Limits is our new discipline program that the whole
                 Limits:
school is using. Ask your student about it at home, and take a look at our
posters in the classroom.
V is for Volunteering I will be needing volunteers throughout the year to help
          Volunteering:
out with different activities and occasional projects. Please make sure you have
been cleared by the office before coming in to volunteer!
W is for Water Bottles I allow each student to bring a re-sealable bottle of
                   Bottles:
water to school each day. Bottles must be able to close tightly to avoid spills, and
may only contain plain water (no add-in packets, Propel, Vitamin Water, or juice).
I ask that the water bottles not be frozen because when they begin to thaw the
student’s desk and paper become wet. If a student is unable to handle having a
water bottle at their desk, they will lose it for the day and try again the next day.
Y is for You You and your family are some of the most important tools
          You:
teachers have to making school a successful place for students to learn. Thank
you for your interest and I look forward to working with you this school year!
