Introduction
IMMUNOMODULATION
Immunomodulation agents from natural sources (herbal products) have
proven to be safe and effective alternatives.
Stimulate the body’s natural defense against pathogens including viruses,
Currently, no medications are approved for its therapy
Malfunctions or imbalances in the immune system are associated with a
range of chronic diseases
Carotenoids, terpenoids, flavonoids, polyphenols, organosulfur-containing
compounds, polysaccharides
Plant-based nutritional foods are known to improve the population of
beneficial bacteria present in intestines which help and constitute up to
85% of the immune system.
Microorganisms are recognized by T and B
lymphocytes through cell surface-antigen-
specific receptors and the invaders are
eliminated through cytotoxic responses and
antibody production
IMMUNE SYSTEM RESPONSES
Microbes are identified by pattern-
recognition receptors (PRRs)
Non-specific immunity
Mobilizes the protective immunity
Produces type-I interferons (IFN-Is) and
proinflammatory cytokines, expression of
natural antibodies (NAbs)
INNATE IMMUNITY
ADAPTIVE IMMUNITY
HOWEVER, Pathogenic microbes often succeed in infecting
the biological system including surpassing
recognition by immune cells and immobilizing
immune responses
Viruses can interfere with the antiviral signaling of
the immune system by altering genetic materials,
reducing cytokine generation, and hindering the
expression of PRRs, reducing the cytotoxic
function of T cells
Some virus particles enter a host cell in the
dormant state
Directly killing the infecting
microbes

been studied extensively during recent years due to the
growing awareness on immune system modulation strategy
to combat infectious diseases

CONCLUSION
The outbreak of respiratory
diseases including the viral
outbreak of COVID-19 has made
direct treatments of modern
medicines inefficient.
A wide range of plant extracts,
herbal products, and pure plant
constituents have shown potential
immunomodulation effects.
These products and their bioactive
molecules modulate immune
responses through the stimulation
and modification of mechanisms of
the immune system.
However, these plant extracts may
contain one or more of the active
constituents and their relative
contribution and mechanism in the
generation of immunomodulation
activity are difficult to understand.
