2. The History of the Toyota Supra
With the upcoming arrival of the 2020 N Charlotte Toyota Supra,
you can’t help but feel nostalgic and want to take a look at
where the Supra came from and where it’s going.
The new 2020 model year Supra sports cutting-edge lines,
updated technology, and a powerful engine fit for the race
track. But, the Supra of the olden days is still something to be
marveled at and something fans have long admired.
However, the history of this iconic N Charlotte Toyota sports car
isn’t as glamorous as it seems. Today, we’re taking you on a trip
down memory lane and throwing it back to the old days of the
Toyota Supra.
3. It all began with the Toyota Celica
The Toyota Supra wasn’t originally called the Supra and it wasn’t
a vehicle all it’s own.
In fact, the N Charlotte Supra began as a subset model of the
Toyota Celica. It eventually became its own vehicle in 1986,
beginning with the Toyota Supra A70.
4. Features of the old Supra
The past N Charlotte Toyota Supra drew inspiration for the famous
(and highly limited) Toyota 2000GT by use of a straight six engine.
As sporty as it was, the Toyota Supra wasn’t perceived as the
racing legend that it is today. In fact, the 4th generation model in
1993 only sold 2,901 vehicles in North America.
The 1996 model was reengineered to include required On-Board
Diagnostic System II, which drove the MSRP up to $38,600. Only
852 were sold and it was officially discontinued in 1998.
5. The Toyota Supra’s saving grace
Arguably what saved the Toyota Supra was actually a movie.
Ever head of The Fast and The Furious?
A classic from 2001, this movie featured a Toyota Supra equipped
with the now iconic 2JZ-GTE engine as a street racer.
Seeing the N Charlotte Supra in the film peaked the interest of
gearheads and car fanatics alike.
Eventually, with enough tinkering, mechanics found that you
could achieve 1,000+ horsepower on a 2JZ engine with only a
few modifications!
