A Snowy Night By The Sea
On a snowy night, on a cliff by the sea, a young boy discovered a little girl with glowing red hair
buried underneath the snow by the village's farm. He had been playing around the animal pens when
he suddenly noticed a glowing patch of snow. The young boy felt a certain radiance, which was
comparable to the warmth of a campfire, as he drew closer to it. After digging the snow covering the
source of this glow, he found her in a comatose state. Nearly 2 months after the discovery, the girl
opened her eyes to see the young boy sitting on a chair beside her bed. As fast as he could, the
young boy rain to find the village chief to inform him about the girl's awakening. Once they arrived
back at the young boy's house, where the girl had been kindly taken in, they were welcomed by the
smiling young girl with the glowing red hair. With a nervous tone, the young boy stated his name,
Alex, and greeted the young girl as well with a smile. After the three of them conversed, a couple of
things were found out about the girl: the young girl's name was Kiki, she had no recollection of
anything besides her name and the fact that she fainted from exhaustion on the night she was found.
Kiki was told during their conversation that the village they resided in was known as Azrael, that
Alex was of the same age of the young girl, and that the village chief's name was Dean. The young
girl stayed in Alex's home and began to assimilate with his family. Alex usually would try to talk to

The Golden Compass
Anyone who says a book should be read by everybody obviously doesn't know how books work,
books are meticulously crafted pieces of art made for a very specific audience. In the case of The
Golden Compass, the book should be read by the open–minded but isn't limited to those people. The
concept that this essay will focus on is freedom through knowledge. The concept of freedom
through knowledge was displayed well throughout the novel, it was displayed by; church and
organizations, Lord Asriel losing power when others started to learn, and Lyra gaining freedom
when she started learning. Freedom of knowledge is an important theme throughout the novel and
through life as well, this essay will prove how freedom of knowledge is an actual concept and ...

Lyra has a part to play in all this, and a major one. The irony is that she must do it all without
realizing what she's doing... I wish above all things that I were able to explain it to her...." (Pullman,
FIND THE PAGE NUMBER FOR THIS) This quote shows how much faith the Master has in Lyra
to do what she must do, but more importantly faith in whatever religion he believes in that they will
lead her down the proper path. Ironically, Pullman is an atheist, and the reason he had put so much
emphasis on religion and churches is to point out how they restrict knowledge to promote what they
feel is right, whether it really is or not. The General Oblation Board was another religious
organization within the novel, the organization was corrupt and would kidnap children and separate
them from their daemons, the equivalent of separating body from soul. The daemons in the novel
represent the people they are attached to, most children have daemons that still can change between
animals, while adults have daemons that are stuck in their final form. Daemons are representations
of who the people really are, children still can change who they are without being stuck to that one
persona, while adults on the other hand have already decided their fate, whether it be a servant with
a dog for a daemon or a political powerhouse with a fox for a daemon. The General Oblation Board
were splitting the bond between children and daemons because they believed it stopped the possible
sinning that they could do later in life, another theory that could potentially kill children, due to a
lack of knowledge. Lord Asriel, was later found out to be part of The General Oblation Board with
the sole passion of destroying the substance referred to as

A Critical Analysis Of 'Death Be Not Proud'
Everyone has fears, something that they avoid at all cost, something that makes them hide in terror.
Fears are everywhere they can start at birth with the fear of the dark and even can be seen in the
most confident and strong adults. There is one fear in particular that most everyone can say they
have thought about, and that is death. In John Donne's sonnet "Death be not proud" the speaker can
be seen gaining confidence through his confrontation of death and becomes more harsh, aggressive
and meaningful. The speaker's points build off one another, growing into one cohesive thought and
eventually completely dethroning death from the power he had over the speaker. The speaker uses
the intricate duo of the personification of death and a striking metaphor comparing death to sleep to
illustrate the comforting yet minimal importance of death to demonstrate the significance of living a
life without the constant fear of dying.
The poem starts right away with the personification of death, giving a once bodiless idea a human
form. In the very first line of the sonnet the speaker says "Death be not proud"(1) in this instance,
the speaker is being respectful all while showing that death is not "Mighty and dreadful"(2). In this
section of the poem the speaker is right up close to death, face to face, a fear among most humans,
and is telling one on one that he is not scared anymore. He is declaring that death should be more
humble as death is not as important as he believes. The use of

Birlhartz Background Of Islam Analysis
Bilhartz did very well in explaining the background of Islam. He was correct when he said that
Islam "remains one of the world's most misunderstood religious traditions", despite it being the
second largest religion in the world ( Bilhartz, p. 103). Before reading the chapter, I had no idea
what Islam was all about. In the following paragraphs, I have included information about Islam that
was new or interesting to me. To begin, Muslims are offended when their religion is referred to as
Muhammadanism because it implies that Muhammad was the creator of the religion rather than God
(Bilhartz, p. 103). Muhammad was regarded as only a mouthpiece for God to bring people back to
the pure faith. The correct term is Islam, which the word is derived from the Arabic letters s–l–m,
which means "surrender" and "peace" in English (Blihartz, p.103). There is also the misconception
that Islam is only in the Arab world. Not all Arabs in the Middle East are Muslims and the largest
Islamic population is found in South Asia (Bilhartz, p. 103). ... Show more content on

I had previously thought Muslims rejected Jesus entirely, but in fact, Muslims embraced the sacred
stories about the life of Jesus. The Q'uran shares the story of the miraculous birth of Jesus and how
he was a man filled with the Holy Spirit , tasked to lead a righteous life, spread the message of God,
and perform miracles (Bilhartz, p. 108). However, the Muslims deny that Jesus was God incarnate
like many orthodox Christians believe. They also deny that Jesus died on the cross, instead he was
taken to heaven by God. " Many Muslims believe in the Second Coming of Jesus and that in the
final Day of Resurrection, Jesus will testify against the evil doers and those who claim that he was a
deity and not God's prophet" (Bilhartz, p.

The Scale of Values in Alexander Pope's Poem The Rape of the Lock
I found Alexander Pope's "The Rape of the Lock" a delightful, amusing poem. Throughout the
poem, trivialities are compared with events and objects or consequence and the insignificant is
treated with utmost importance. Its very title gives the reader an immediate clue; "rape" and all its
connotations bring to mind a heinous crime of physical and spiritual violation. Perhaps this
description could apply to the theft of a lock of hair, but only in a world where normal morals are
perverted. This skewed scale of values is shown repeatedly throughout the poem, and supporting
this alternate world are the sylphs. As the souls of former coquettes, the sylphs exist solely to ...

Here, the word "militia" brings to mind an imposing, well–regulated army, rather than a gossamer
grouping of sprites bent on protecting beauty and virginity.
It is sylph Ariel that foresees the "dread event" of the poem's title. Ariel says to Belinda: "Warned by
the Sylph, O pious maid, beware! / This to disclose is all thy guardian can: / Beware of all, but most
beware of man!" (1.109, 112–14). Man, of course, is the coquette's eternal adversary. A lady must be
very careful; men may be allured and teased, but as prey they can be unpredictable.
Following this warning Belinda wakes and begins the transcendental toilet, one of my favorite
scenes in the poem. Pope elevates Belinda's morning preparations to the level of High Mass; a
mystical, spiritual experience in which miraculous transformation takes place. In this ritual,
however, "cosmetic powers" rather than cosmic powers are relied upon. (1.124). With the aid of the
sylphs, Belinda begins her grooming:
And now, unveiled, the toilet stands displayed,
Each silver vase in mystic order laid.
First, robed in white, the nymph intent adores,
With head uncovered, the cosmetic powers.
A heavenly image in the glass appears;
To that she bends, to that her eyes she rears.
The inferior priestess, at her altar's side,
Trembling begins the sacred rites of Pride. (1.121–28)
Here we see an example of the utmost importance of the superficial in the absurd

But as the events take place, we can see that due to the actions and the dialog shared between the
characters, this two star–crossed lovers are truly depressed because of the actions that their families'
feud have gotten to. At the time, suicide was a way to relieve the pain and to escape the horrors of
the world, as it is now, but some of the causes have changed. In the first appearance of Romeo, we
see him sad over an old love, Rosaline. The way that he speaks of her and the way he refers to
everything not having to do with her gives the impression that he is not happy with the way he is
living and the way things take course without her. Equally, Juliet is forced into marriage, as is used
at the time for a female. She does not only want the freedom to choose who she will marry, but the
wants to be free of any other choices that will be made for her. If the plot of events were to occur in
the present time, is very likes likely that this two teen s may have found another way to deal with
their problems. Romeo would have not been so depressed over a love and Juliet would have had the
right to make her choices as she wished. Suicide and the way we see it has changed in the laps over

Comparison Of Emily Dickinson And Edgar Allan Poe
Emily Dickinson and Edgar Allan Poe were histories most proficient writers and their work speaks
for itself. They were born in the same time frame and they knew a lot about each other's work. Their
life lessons are what contributed to their remarkable poetry writing and what made them who they
are today. Poe and Dickinson do share similar topics in their poetry writing, some are also dissimilar
in which all of them focuses a lot on pain, death, love and nature.
It is important to know a little background information about the two poets that describes how they
have similar and dissimilar history. Both Poe and Dickinson were born in Massachusetts in the early
1800s. Edgar Allan Poe who was born in 1809 in Boston, Massachusetts but ended up leaving and
moved to New England where he spent most of his life. Emily Dickinson was born years later in
1830 in Amherst, Massachusetts where she resided there most of her life. Both poets went to school
to further their education. Poe attended the University of Virginia where he ended up gambling to
pay off his debt for college. Poe was greatly poor that he burnt his furniture to keep warm during his
first term in college. He ended up dropping out of college and returned to Richmond to find that his
fiancée was engaged to another man. Around this time, he enlisted in the army after he published his
first book when he was eighteen years old called Tamerlane. He was later thrown out of the military
after only eight months of service.

Gun Rights And Gun Control : The Debate Taking The Nation...
Euphemia Lee November 12, 2014 MVP Background & Voices Gun Rights or Gun Control: The
debate taking the nation by a storm. Background Gun rights are a hotly debated topic in the United
States, especially in light of recent mass shootings that have occurred. Guns have caused a high
number of casualties, eliciting a need to reassess gun laws. There is no one easy solution to the
problem, especially due to the development of new firearms such as assault rifles, machine guns,
and semi–automatic handguns. Before delving more into the subject matter at hand, let us explore
more about the history of gun policies in the US. December 15, 1791 is an important date in United
States history; it marks the ratification of the US Bill of Rights. Written in the Bill of Rights is
Amendment II, which states, "...being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the
people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." Most people believe the amendment
guarantees the right to firearms, but some interpret that it is a right reserved for the militia. District
of Columbia v. Heller (2008) showed that people have the right to possess firearms for self–defense,
and other agreeable uses. The ruling furthered that firearms are allowed under the second
amendment. Of course, we cannot own firearms freely. On November 30, 1993, Bill Clinton signed
the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act into law. The act prohibits convicts from owning
firearms, and ensures that all people who

The Issue Of Gun Control
We live in a world of people infatuated with the idea that every theory has to be proven in order to
be deemed valid or credible. That is what I will do in the span of this paper, restate the proven facts
and integrate them in a way that will trigger a new viewpoint on the subject. Gun control is
something that should be enforced across the world in order to save lives. In the United States there
is a ratio of 88.8 guns per one hundred persons (GunPolicy.org). Those numbers award us with the
highest total per capita number in the world. With that amount of firepower there needs to be an
efficient way to regulate who exactly can purchase a gun. Since 1791 when the second amendment
was ratified there have been many advancements in general technology especially in firearms. The
main controversy associated with the gun control debate revolve around the different interpretations
of the constitution. The amendment states, "A well–regulated militia, being necessary to the security
of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed." Keeping in
mind that the guns in that time period were single–shot, made by a gunsmith, and fire by the means
of a flintlock.
One argument is that gun control is ultimately ineffective because criminals are already planning on
breaking the law. This is a valid point, criminals or anyone for that matter with the pure intention of
killing, will find a way. However, criminals aren't the only ones responsible for the

The observer's influence is further illustrated in the regular examples of alliteration of the letter 'S'

two, sentence 13).

focus of the human very short; a distraction from God. In Concrete Wafers the human becomes
captivated by their new boots, this obsession alienates them, leaving them unsympathetic and self–
important, mirroring Dr. Faustus. Paradise Lost is alluded to later in the paragraph, with the
inclusion of "obdurate pride ," a phrase which appears in line 58, this impresses how blind sighted
the human has become. The Medusa head on the boots is a reference to the Italian luxury brand
Versace, but also an allusion to a key section in Paradise Lost where Milton speaks of how the false

Gun Control Laws In Australia
In Australia and America, gun control laws are very different, therefore, the populations of the two
countries have different mindsets regarding gun control and violence. America's gun control laws
are based on history while Australia is more open to changing their laws. Because America's gun
control laws are stated in the Bill of Rights, the government is more reluctant to change them.
Therefore, gun violence is more prevalent in the United States due to the higher prevalence of guns
in general. However, Australia has altered its gun control laws as a result of a mass shooting and has
not had any ever since. In America, gun control laws allow citizens to easily gain access to firearms.
Because firearms are so prevalent, mass shootings are common as well. Other things that are results
of lenient gun control laws are increased suicide rate, homicide, and injuries and deaths due to
accidentally mishandled firearms (Miller, Hemenway, 2008; Azrael, Hemenway, Miller, 2000;
Annest, Hargarten, Hootman, Mercy, Ryan, 2000). 53% of all completed suicides were committed
with a firearm. Gun suicide in America during this time accounted 40% more deaths than gun
homicide (Miller, Hemenway, 2008). According to CNN, the current deadliest mass shooting in
America is the shooting by Stephen Paddock at the Mandalay Bay Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada. 58
people were killed and almost 500 were injured. Also, there are certain groups in America that are
moreso affected by American gun control laws. In most events involving firearms, minorities, such
of African Americans and those of Latin descent, have been targets. These lenient gun control laws
have also led to more terrorist attacks as well as an increased rate of police brutality. The main
reason America is so reluctant to alter its gun control laws is because they are instilled in the nation's
foundation, the Constitution. In addition, according to research by Celinska, Durkheim focused on
the concept of individualism and capitalism in his discussion and spoke of the relationship between
society and the individual in capitalistic, industrialized economies (Celinska, 2007). This led to the
realization of the importance of individualism which is evident in the historic tradition

Why Do People Have The Right To Bear Arms
Gun Control "Gun control" is the most common term that describes all sort of restrictions on
firearms such as what can be bought to possess, resell, and when and where you can buy, carry and
store them. Gun control without a doubt is one of the largest and one of the most heated debates of
the decade. One of the most recent shooting events took place at the Sandy Hook Elementary School
in Newtown, Connecticut. The American people have witnessed some of the bloodiest and most
brutal gun incidents the country has ever seen outside a warzone. The increase in the amount and
intensity of great tragedies like these has woken up Americans. The American people have had the
right to own a fire arm since the year 1791, under the second amendment which states, "A well–
regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and
bear arms, shall not be infringed" (Madison). When the founding fathers created this amendment it
was to ensure the safety of the people and to protect the country because a standing army had not yet
been envisioned at the time.

Examples Of Allusion In Macbeth
ALLUSION: A DEATH FAKED FOR YOU Humans are not simple creatures. While being able to
sit around aimlessly in pure content is desirable, humans are characters where pretending to be mad
or contemplating their own deaths are common. This complexity, of course, can easily apply to
anything else. And, being human, we often enjoy going against reality to cut down the corners.
That's where allusion in literature comes in. An allusion is a literary device, in which an author
makes a brief and indirect a person, place, thing or an idea of historical, cultural, literary or political
significance. By creating these references in a body of literature, we develop clear and concise

For example, in Othello, Iago says: "I am not what I am." (Othello. 1.1.71). At first glance, you
probably wouldn't have realized that this was an inversion to a quote from the Book of Exodus,
when Moses asks God for his name, and the reply is, "I am what I am." This achieves a particular
lyrical pattern that causes readers to unconsciously refocus their attention specifically onto Iago.
Furthermore, in this parodied and reversed statement, Iago seems to be positioning himself as the
opposite of God, or, in other words, the Devil, himself. Allowing readers to realize that this is not
the work of a 'wronged' soldier, nor someone who is merely "two–faced", but of one who would
willingly carry a scythe to a midday picnic. This reference used by Shakespeare additionally adds
emphasis onto Iago's ruthless and manipulative ways that progress the plot as a whole. At the same
time, very obvious references do just a good of a job in adding profundity to the text. Speak by

Persuasive Essay On Gun Control
Gun control is necessary in order to have a peaceful city, country and world. Without gun control,
many lives will be taken for unnecessary reasons. Not only should things be settled in a different
way, but violence is never the answer. Those who do not support gun control show they are for
violence and are not thinking in terms of safeness for all. This is why I am pro–gun control. Gun
control is a controversial topic that has been around for decades in the United States and all around
the world. The second amendment states, "A well–regulated militia, being necessary to the security
of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed." (U.S. Const.
am. 2)The questions at hand are as follows; what does a "well–regulated militia" entail, should the
background checks require more and what are the reasons for gun control? There are two sides to
this argument which include the people for gun control who believe guns should be taken off the
streets and the ones against gun control who believe it is a right as a citizen of the United States to
carry a gun. The first reason gun control should be in existence is because without law saying
otherwise, a gun can be in anyone's hands. If stricter gun laws were made, more lives would be
saved. Not only should there be a standard background check, but I am also a strong supporter of
medical background checks. The Council on Foreign Relations states that, "A so–called "gun show
loophole," codified in the Firearm Owners Protection Act of 1986, effectively allows anyone,
including convicted felons, to purchase firearms without a background check." ("U.S. Gun Policy:
Global Comparisons"). If there are no boundaries to who can have a gun, anyone and everyone is
put at risk. Once it is legal for anyone to have a gun, nothing can be done about it. Another reason
gun control should be enforced is because if not, a mentally unstable person could get a hold of one
and do something out of their control. By allowing someone unstable to have a gun, people are just
setting themselves up for disastrous conclusions. Dr. Alan Heister states, "Adam Lanza's actions are
explained solely as a manifestation of mental illness" (Huffington Post). If guns

How Do We Work For Death?
"I know it's a lot to take in. but hey at least it explains for a lot of things right? In fact looking at it
now my boss would love to have you on staff, should you be looking for some stability."
He was silent for a few seconds before asking the obvious question,
"Who's your boss?" I shrugged nonchalantly.
"Death."
Still in shock Aaron remained silent.
"no more questions? Good lets move this along. We are a dying breed and whatever is left of us is
being killed off which isn't exactly a good thing so now I'll turn it over to Father Luccia who
hopefully has a game plan. As for me I have to go but keep me informed..."
"Death?" Aaron said as if barely coming out of a fog.
"What do you mean you work for death?" I sighed.
"I work for Death how hard is it to understand?"
"What do you mean?" he asked again.
"Death as in Death. The Grim Reaper, the big D, no pun intended. I'm a reaper I take souls to be
judged."
Still obviously confused Aaron continued with his infuriating questions.
"how did you get a job like that?" he asked. out of nowhere a strong but delicate feminine voice
echoed his answer.
"because she's evil." Mika said with a gloating stare.
I feigned a scared jump and clutched my heart mockingly as I shrieked.
"Jesus! For a minuet there I thought the furniture was talking!"
Mika narrowed her eyes in anger, which her brother mimicked perfectly. Twins.

Pope Admiring Belinda in The Rape of the Lock Essay
Pope Admiring Belinda in The Rape of the Lock
The main character of Pope's "The Rape of the Lock" could be considered both hailed and damned
by the overseer, but the complexities and sometimes contradictions of Belinda spark a more
unbiased view.
The appearance of Belinda and the world in which she lives is described in a very fantastical and
beautiful way. Even small details such as the arrangement of Belinda's hair are due to wondrous
entities known as the Sylphs, whose sole task is to make sure she is looking her best. This
consideration of appearance in "The Rape of the Lock" is very important as the society that Belinda
lives within is very judgmental on the basis of appearance, especially for women. Her role
is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In many couplets he pairs something epic, which starts off the couplet, with a trivial anti–climax.
The method of writing within
"The Rape of the Lock" is mock epic and serves the purpose of criticising the negative themes
within the poem by revealing them to the extreme.
Although Belinda is very superficial she does have an aura that makes her admirable, and Pope does
not look over this. She makes it known that she is quite pure and innocent and with this innocence it
is easier to overlook to the arguably negative traits that she holds. The social rules within her society
mean that she is condoned to act the way she does and through her innocence she does. She is
arguably innocent considering sex and her own sexuality even though she portrays as beautiful an
image as she can. Her physical gifts though could be argued, in her eyes, to be prettiness and
nothing to do with sexuality. Understanding the possibility of her being innocent, there are also
undercurrents that she is not so pure as she would have the other people within the poem believe. As
an example, after the lock is stolen she tells the Baron that he could have had a more private lock of
hair of her own free will. Although all that can be ordained is assumptions, through the language
that Pope uses it is pretty safe to assume that the innuendo in her speech is intentional.

The answer to that is zero to once in a lifetime, but inappropriately, because one was tired, afraid, or
drunk in a confrontational situation? There are lots and lots of chances. The facts are all in, the
evidence is clear, the truth there for all who care to know it; indeed, a global consensus is in place,
which, in disbelief and now in disgust, the planet waits for this country to join. Those who fight
against gun control, with a shrug of helplessness, are dooming more kids to horrible deaths and
more parents to unspeakable grief. It's really, and inarguably, just as simple as that. Interestingly
enough, the proponents of less gun control are often those on the more conservative side of the
political spectrum. Conservative people, when in groups big enough can become a majority in a
state, thus making it a "red", conservative state. A large area of Conservative states is in the south.
Most of the southern states are controlled with a more conservative bias. Interestingly enough, the
south is the most violent region in the United States. "This study looked at deaths due to assault in
different regions of the country. Just as the United States is a clear outlier in the international

most violent of the developed countries when Estonia and Mexico are excluded, but the more

Gay, Bisexual, And Transgender Youth Suicide Essay
Introduction
Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender youth suicide continues to be a problem in many different
countries but very limited data has been gathered about this social issue internationally. While it is
well–known that it is still ongoing problem in many countries such as: Israel where a study of 1,134
teenagers were surveyed and results show that 20% of these teenagers have attempted suicide,
which is 112 times the rate of the general population. The study also showed that the rate is even
higher for LGBT teenagers who have religious backgrounds (Roberts, 2012). In Australia, LGBT
youth have the highest rates of suicidality. 20% of transgendered and 15.7% of lesbian, gay and
bisexual Australians have reported current suicidal ideation. Same–sex attracted Australians have up
to fourteen times higher rates of suicide attempts compared to heterosexual peers. The rate is six
times higher for homosexual adolescents (Rosenstreich, 2013). Lastly, In New Zealand; of the
young people who completed the 2012 survey "Young People Attracted to the Same Sex or Both
Sexes Report", 59.4% had said they have deliberately self–harmed in the previous twelve months
and 47.7% have reported suicidal ideation (Ministry of Youth Development, 2015). The data
gathered is enough to prove that LGBT youth suicide is a social issue of international significance.

no denying that B.D. Wong's Hugo Strange was a major scene–stealer in "Mr. Freeze" and he is up

Strange tick and Theo Galavan's possible transformation into DC comic book character Azrael.
"He's a mad scientist in that he's obsessed with some kind of thing he sees as progress," Wong said
of Strange before explaining the villain's mindset.
"'I'm going to be the guy who believes science is changing the world. I don't really care what the

John Donne's 'Death Be Not Proud'
Fears are everywhere they can start at birth with the fear of the dark and even can be seen in the
most confident and strong adults. There is one fear in particular that most everyone can say they
have thought about, and that is death. In John Donne's sonnet "Death be not proud" the speaker can
be seen gaining confidence through his confrontation of death and becomes more harsh, aggressive
and meaningful. The speaker's points build off one another, growing into one cohesive thought and
eventually completely dethroning death from the power he had over the speaker. The speaker uses
the intricate duo of the personification of death and a striking metaphor comparing death to sleep to
illustrate the comforting yet minimal importance of death to demonstrate the significance of living a
life without the constant fear of dying and to seize the day. The poem starts right away with the
personification of death, giving a once bodiless idea a human form. In the very first line of the
sonnet the speaker says "Death be not proud, though some have called thee / Mighty and dreadful,
for thou art not so"(1–2) in this instance, the speaker is being respectful all while showing that death
is not "Mighty and dreadful"(2). In this section of the poem the speaker is right up close to death,
face to face, a fear among most humans, and is telling one on one that he is not scared anymore. He
is declaring that death should be more humble as death is not as important as he believes. The use of

Analysis Of A Lock Of Hair And A Wounded Heart
A Lock of Hair and a Wounded Heart Throughout the course of history and its literature, authors and
poets have served as messengers for the times in which they lived, whether it be about political
upheaval or social constructs or the lives of the common man. One way this was accomplished was
through satire. Alexander Pope, whom of which lived in the literary Restoration period and wrote
the poem, "The Rape of the Lock," in 1714, provides a work as an excellent example of satire. He
parodies the upper classes favorite literature (epic, heroic poetry) to mock the absurdity and
irrationality of the upper class. Using the common tropes of divine intervention, hyperbole, and lofty
language, a gleefully sarcastic tone emerges to allow the reader to see through the faux seriousness
regarding the loss of a strand of hair from a noble woman. In numerous works of epic poetry and
that of the classic style, an invocation to divine spirits and gods invited a sense of vindication and
importance in a work. Works like Homer's long beloved Odyssey among others almost completely
rely on divine intervention to effectuate the plot and justify actions of either the protagonist or the
antagonist. Pope crafitly uses this common tactic in such works to parody the highbrow love for
them. In the case of Belinda, her beauty is such to rival nymphs and Aphrodite; she is incontestably
divine in human form, made of love and youth and flowering nature. That beauty, however, is soiled
when a lock from

positive wellbeing of LGB youth can be ensured through such services in accordance with their

It is understood from the above understandings, that due to violence, stigma and discrimination that

Meanwhile, I should consider the social stigma associated with LGB youth and be prepared to

Foreshadowing In A Good Man Is Hard To Find
"A good Man Is Hard To Find" by Flannery O'Connor portrays the seemingly destined death of a
southern family. The story opens with an immediate foreshadowing of the family's downfall through
the grandmothers introduction of the outlaw known as "the misfit". The grandmother herself servers

The first sentence presents this role as the story narrates "The Grandmother didn't want to go to

time of despair displays her desperation to be saved from her descent to hell. The Misfit himself
serves as the angel Azrael, taking the family to Heaven or Hell. The Grandmother sees this and
begins referring to him as a "good" man who "wouldn't hurt a lady". In her final moments, she has
an epiphany, and begins to love him as one of her own children. As she realizes this, she tells him
"Why you're one of my babies. You're one of my own children !" "Why you're one of my babies.
You're one of my own children !" (45). This sudden love of her fellow man and forgiveness for his
past actions as she reaches out her hand to forgive him serves as her moment of redemption. As she
lay on the floor in her own puddle of blood, "with her legs crossed under her like a child's and her
face smiling up at the cloudless sky.", she knows she has been forgiven. In that one moment, she had
experienced more growth than she ever had before in her life, and redeemed herself in the eyes of
God. Her love of him as one of her own children serves as the reason for her position after her death.
That moment also changed the Misfit himself, in the way that his eyes changed to "pale and
defenseless–looking."

The Nature of Death in Emily Dickinson's Poems Essay
Emily Dickinson once said, "Dying is a wild night and a new road." Some people welcome death
with open arms while others cower in fear when confronted in the arms of death. Through the use of
ambiguity, metaphors, personification and paradoxes Emily Dickinson still gives readers a sense of
vagueness on how she feels about dying. Emily Dickinson inventively expresses the nature of death
in the poems, "I felt a Funeral, in my Brain (280)", "I Heard a fly Buzz–When I Died–(465)" and
"Because I could not stop for Death–(712)".
Emily Dickinson, who achieved more fame after her death, is said to be one of the greatest

Dickinson's poems provide that secret gateway to the supernatural that Ferlazzo is referring to.
In the poem "I felt a Funeral, in my Brain," Emily Dickinson uses symbolism to convey some sort of
mental funeral that the speaker is experiencing. The funeral image that Dickinson depicts in the first
line of the poem: "I felt a Funeral, in my Brain," does not literally represent a funeral, but it is used
to symbolism a mental breakdown and agony that the speaker is going through. By using this
symbolism, the speaker is imagining the death of old ways of thought. Dickinson writes that when
the funeral service was "like a Drum–" (Dickinson 43) and that it "Kept beating–beating–till I
thought My Mind was going numb–" (43), leaving readers believing that the speaker is going mad.
By depicting this image, Dickinson reveals that with the death of old thought; there is some sort of
numbness or pain that is necessary to "progress to a better state" (Goldfarb 2). By repeating the
beating sound two times, along with the rhyming sequence in the previous lines of the poem,
Dickinson is stressing the numbness and the importance of it.
Dickinson uses ambiguity to stress the difficulty of knowing and understanding certain experiences
and thoughts to the reader. By being deliberately elusive, Dickinson makes the speaker out to be
some sort of hero. In a critical essay of "I felt a Funeral, in my Brain," Sheldon Goldfarb

Essay on Exploring Death in Death in Venice
Exploring Death in Death in Venice
Death in Venice by Thomas Mann, is a story that deals with mortality on many different levels.
There is the obvious physical death by cholera, and the cyclical death in nature: in the beginning it is
spring and in the end, autumn. We see a kind of death of the ego in Gustav Aschenbach's dreams.
Venice itself is a personification of death, and death is seen as the leitmotif in musical terms. It is
also reflected in the idea of the traveler coming to the end of a long fatiguing journey.
It must also be noted there are no women in the story with prominent roles. The hero's wife is long

of a psychology–ridden age" (13) succumbs to an egoless state, not only in the last grotesque dream,
but directly after it in his conscious mind as well. From this point on, Gustav becomes totally
shameless. (We have seen this theme of loss of shame as being a kind of death, and actually leading
to literal death as well, in Salman Rushdie's Shame.)
Mann's use of Venice as a backdrop is critical. Venice, an ancient city, inexorably sinking beneath
the water, a "forbidden spot" (38) with "stagnant lagoons" (28) the "fallen queen of the sea" (36).
Venice, with a "faintly rotten scent" (37) "half fairy tale, half snare" (55) "that hid sickness for love
of gain . . . (56). The city that had "a disreputable secret [like] his own" (57).
In musical terms, death is the leitmotif, the theme keeps reappearing: heard in the overture (the first
stranger Aschenbach sees in Munich), continually sounded in the Venetian passages (more odd
men), swelling to a crescendo of hysterical laughter and swirling pipes of Pan, and, in the

Essay on The Rape of the Lock
The Rape of the Lock
Alexander Pope's mock heroic epic The Rape of the Lock appears to be a light subject addressed
with a satiric tone and structure. Pope often regards the unwanted cutting of a woman's hair as a
trivial thing, but the fashionable world takes it seriously. Upon closer examination Pope has, perhaps
unwittingly, broached issues worthy of earnest consideration. The Rape of the Lock at first glance is
a commentary on human vanity and the ritual of courtship. The poem also discusses the relationship
between men and women, which is the more substantial matter in particular. Pope examines the
oppressed position of women. Infringement on a woman's personal space, her person and her pride

force attained his ends. (II, 31–33)
The Baron will either have the lock, or destroy any power she possesses with it. The war Pope
illustrates between men and women continues with the playing of the card game. Instead of fighting
on the traditional battlefield Belinda plays cards against the Baron, eager to meet him on his own
terms:
Belinda now, whom thirst of fame invites, Burns to encounter two adventurous knights, At

announcement about human imprudence, a lesson on female vanity, and a clever perspective of the

Poem also satirise the moral bankruptcy of the ladies of the time.
"Ariel wonders Belinda will break Diana's law or some china jar shall receive a flaw; whether she
shall stain the honour or new brocade; whether she shall forget her prayers or miss a dance party;
whether she shall loose her heart or her necklace".
These lines show how easily and irreparably chastity might be lost in the world of fashion. In the
18th century honour to a lady was publically worn accessory like her brocade which could be easily
stained.
The character of Belinda is the courageous woman of The Rape of the Lock. Pope constructs her
character in light of the authentic Arabella Fermor, the little girl of a noble Catholic gang. Robert,
Lord Petre, a family companion, cut a lock of her hair without authorization, along these lines
bringing about a crack between their two families. Pope delineates this occurrence in the lyric.
The Baron is an admirer of Belinda's, and he authorizes the "Rape of the lock" by snipping off one

The Rape of the Lock is a poem in which each component of the contemporary scene invokes some
picture from epic convention or the traditional world perspective, and the pieces are fashioned
together with an intelligence and skill that makes the lyric astonishing and delightful. Pope's
changes are various, striking, and stacked with good ramifications. The considerable clashes of epic
get to be episodes of betting and coy tiffs. The considerable, if whimsical, Greek and Roman divine
beings are changed over into a moderately undifferentiated armed force of fundamentally
insufficient sprites. Beautifiers, attire, and gems substitute for protective layer and weapons, and the
ceremonies of religious penance are transplanted to the changing area and the sacred place of

Should Guns Be Guns On College Campuses?
On January 23rd of this year, Florida State passed a bill allowing students with permits to carry
concealed guns on college campuses. I am writing this from the library of a college campus in
Florida two months after that bill was passed. Instead of concentrating on my work, I find my eyes
wandering to my classmates. I am wondering which one of them is carrying a gun in the library. Is it
the man in the corner reading a calculus book? How about the woman across from me typing away
on the library computer? How safe am I on my college campus, a place where I should be free to
learn and not worry for my safety? The argument for guns on campuses is that adult gun owners
with permits should be allowed to carry on campus to defend against a shooter. This stems from a
shooting at a USF campus earlier in the year. Would that gun man have been stopped if students had
been carrying guns? Is there any promise that someone who qualifies to carry a gun on campus
won't turn their weapon on a fellow student? I ask myself these questions trying to determine what I
believe to be the right answer to the gun law. No, guns should not be allowed on a college campus,
we should be free to learn without feeling that we need to defend ourselves from our classmates. My
afternoon in the library is a perfect example of how a law allowing guns on a college campus can
create paranoia and an uncomfortable learning environment. I had spent my afternoon planning to
study and complete my work but I was

A Snowy Night By The Sea

  • 1. A Snowy Night By The Sea On a snowy night, on a cliff by the sea, a young boy discovered a little girl with glowing red hair buried underneath the snow by the village's farm. He had been playing around the animal pens when he suddenly noticed a glowing patch of snow. The young boy felt a certain radiance, which was comparable to the warmth of a campfire, as he drew closer to it. After digging the snow covering the source of this glow, he found her in a comatose state. Nearly 2 months after the discovery, the girl opened her eyes to see the young boy sitting on a chair beside her bed. As fast as he could, the young boy rain to find the village chief to inform him about the girl's awakening. Once they arrived back at the young boy's house, where the girl had been kindly taken in, they were welcomed by the smiling young girl with the glowing red hair. With a nervous tone, the young boy stated his name, Alex, and greeted the young girl as well with a smile. After the three of them conversed, a couple of things were found out about the girl: the young girl's name was Kiki, she had no recollection of anything besides her name and the fact that she fainted from exhaustion on the night she was found. Kiki was told during their conversation that the village they resided in was known as Azrael, that Alex was of the same age of the young girl, and that the village chief's name was Dean. The young girl stayed in Alex's home and began to assimilate with his family. Alex usually would try to talk to the young ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. The Golden Compass Anyone who says a book should be read by everybody obviously doesn't know how books work, books are meticulously crafted pieces of art made for a very specific audience. In the case of The Golden Compass, the book should be read by the open–minded but isn't limited to those people. The concept that this essay will focus on is freedom through knowledge. The concept of freedom through knowledge was displayed well throughout the novel, it was displayed by; church and organizations, Lord Asriel losing power when others started to learn, and Lyra gaining freedom when she started learning. Freedom of knowledge is an important theme throughout the novel and through life as well, this essay will prove how freedom of knowledge is an actual concept and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Lyra has a part to play in all this, and a major one. The irony is that she must do it all without realizing what she's doing... I wish above all things that I were able to explain it to her...." (Pullman, FIND THE PAGE NUMBER FOR THIS) This quote shows how much faith the Master has in Lyra to do what she must do, but more importantly faith in whatever religion he believes in that they will lead her down the proper path. Ironically, Pullman is an atheist, and the reason he had put so much emphasis on religion and churches is to point out how they restrict knowledge to promote what they feel is right, whether it really is or not. The General Oblation Board was another religious organization within the novel, the organization was corrupt and would kidnap children and separate them from their daemons, the equivalent of separating body from soul. The daemons in the novel represent the people they are attached to, most children have daemons that still can change between animals, while adults have daemons that are stuck in their final form. Daemons are representations of who the people really are, children still can change who they are without being stuck to that one persona, while adults on the other hand have already decided their fate, whether it be a servant with a dog for a daemon or a political powerhouse with a fox for a daemon. The General Oblation Board were splitting the bond between children and daemons because they believed it stopped the possible sinning that they could do later in life, another theory that could potentially kill children, due to a lack of knowledge. Lord Asriel, was later found out to be part of The General Oblation Board with the sole passion of destroying the substance referred to as ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. A Critical Analysis Of 'Death Be Not Proud' Everyone has fears, something that they avoid at all cost, something that makes them hide in terror. Fears are everywhere they can start at birth with the fear of the dark and even can be seen in the most confident and strong adults. There is one fear in particular that most everyone can say they have thought about, and that is death. In John Donne's sonnet "Death be not proud" the speaker can be seen gaining confidence through his confrontation of death and becomes more harsh, aggressive and meaningful. The speaker's points build off one another, growing into one cohesive thought and eventually completely dethroning death from the power he had over the speaker. The speaker uses the intricate duo of the personification of death and a striking metaphor comparing death to sleep to illustrate the comforting yet minimal importance of death to demonstrate the significance of living a life without the constant fear of dying. The poem starts right away with the personification of death, giving a once bodiless idea a human form. In the very first line of the sonnet the speaker says "Death be not proud"(1) in this instance, the speaker is being respectful all while showing that death is not "Mighty and dreadful"(2). In this section of the poem the speaker is right up close to death, face to face, a fear among most humans, and is telling one on one that he is not scared anymore. He is declaring that death should be more humble as death is not as important as he believes. The use of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Birlhartz Background Of Islam Analysis Bilhartz did very well in explaining the background of Islam. He was correct when he said that Islam "remains one of the world's most misunderstood religious traditions", despite it being the second largest religion in the world ( Bilhartz, p. 103). Before reading the chapter, I had no idea what Islam was all about. In the following paragraphs, I have included information about Islam that was new or interesting to me. To begin, Muslims are offended when their religion is referred to as Muhammadanism because it implies that Muhammad was the creator of the religion rather than God (Bilhartz, p. 103). Muhammad was regarded as only a mouthpiece for God to bring people back to the pure faith. The correct term is Islam, which the word is derived from the Arabic letters s–l–m, which means "surrender" and "peace" in English (Blihartz, p.103). There is also the misconception that Islam is only in the Arab world. Not all Arabs in the Middle East are Muslims and the largest Islamic population is found in South Asia (Bilhartz, p. 103). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I had previously thought Muslims rejected Jesus entirely, but in fact, Muslims embraced the sacred stories about the life of Jesus. The Q'uran shares the story of the miraculous birth of Jesus and how he was a man filled with the Holy Spirit , tasked to lead a righteous life, spread the message of God, and perform miracles (Bilhartz, p. 108). However, the Muslims deny that Jesus was God incarnate like many orthodox Christians believe. They also deny that Jesus died on the cross, instead he was taken to heaven by God. " Many Muslims believe in the Second Coming of Jesus and that in the final Day of Resurrection, Jesus will testify against the evil doers and those who claim that he was a deity and not God's prophet" (Bilhartz, p. ... • 9. The Scale of Values in Alexander Pope's Poem The Rape of... The Scale of Values in Alexander Pope's Poem The Rape of the Lock I found Alexander Pope's "The Rape of the Lock" a delightful, amusing poem. Throughout the poem, trivialities are compared with events and objects or consequence and the insignificant is treated with utmost importance. Its very title gives the reader an immediate clue; "rape" and all its connotations bring to mind a heinous crime of physical and spiritual violation. Perhaps this description could apply to the theft of a lock of hair, but only in a world where normal morals are perverted. This skewed scale of values is shown repeatedly throughout the poem, and supporting this alternate world are the sylphs. As the souls of former coquettes, the sylphs exist solely to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Here, the word "militia" brings to mind an imposing, well–regulated army, rather than a gossamer grouping of sprites bent on protecting beauty and virginity. It is sylph Ariel that foresees the "dread event" of the poem's title. Ariel says to Belinda: "Warned by the Sylph, O pious maid, beware! / This to disclose is all thy guardian can: / Beware of all, but most beware of man!" (1.109, 112–14). Man, of course, is the coquette's eternal adversary. A lady must be very careful; men may be allured and teased, but as prey they can be unpredictable. Following this warning Belinda wakes and begins the transcendental toilet, one of my favorite scenes in the poem. Pope elevates Belinda's morning preparations to the level of High Mass; a mystical, spiritual experience in which miraculous transformation takes place. In this ritual, however, "cosmetic powers" rather than cosmic powers are relied upon. (1.124). With the aid of the sylphs, Belinda begins her grooming: And now, unveiled, the toilet stands displayed, Each silver vase in mystic order laid. First, robed in white, the nymph intent adores, With head uncovered, the cosmetic powers. A heavenly image in the glass appears; To that she bends, to that her eyes she rears. The inferior priestess, at her altar's side, Trembling begins the sacred rites of Pride. (1.121–28) Here we see an example of the utmost importance of the superficial in the absurd

Due to this, little is known about suicides in the medieval times. In look at suicides and self– hurting in the Shakespearean era and now present time, fact surrounding self–killing have changed in this 700 years of difference. In the play of Romeo and Juliet, suicidal tendencies played a big role in the conclusion and the events that let up to this. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... But as the events take place, we can see that due to the actions and the dialog shared between the characters, this two star–crossed lovers are truly depressed because of the actions that their families' feud have gotten to. At the time, suicide was a way to relieve the pain and to escape the horrors of the world, as it is now, but some of the causes have changed. In the first appearance of Romeo, we see him sad over an old love, Rosaline. The way that he speaks of her and the way he refers to everything not having to do with her gives the impression that he is not happy with the way he is living and the way things take course without her. Equally, Juliet is forced into marriage, as is used at the time for a female. She does not only want the freedom to choose who she will marry, but the wants to be free of any other choices that will be made for her. • 22. Gun Rights And Gun Control : The Debate Taking The Nation... Euphemia Lee November 12, 2014 MVP Background & Voices Gun Rights or Gun Control: The debate taking the nation by a storm. Background Gun rights are a hotly debated topic in the United States, especially in light of recent mass shootings that have occurred. Guns have caused a high number of casualties, eliciting a need to reassess gun laws. There is no one easy solution to the problem, especially due to the development of new firearms such as assault rifles, machine guns, and semi–automatic handguns. Before delving more into the subject matter at hand, let us explore more about the history of gun policies in the US. December 15, 1791 is an important date in United States history; it marks the ratification of the US Bill of Rights. Written in the Bill of Rights is Amendment II, which states, "...being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." Most people believe the amendment guarantees the right to firearms, but some interpret that it is a right reserved for the militia. District of Columbia v. Heller (2008) showed that people have the right to possess firearms for self–defense, and other agreeable uses. The ruling furthered that firearms are allowed under the second amendment. Of course, we cannot own firearms freely. On November 30, 1993, Bill Clinton signed the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act into law. The act prohibits convicts from owning firearms, and ensures that all people who ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 24. The Issue Of Gun Control We live in a world of people infatuated with the idea that every theory has to be proven in order to be deemed valid or credible. That is what I will do in the span of this paper, restate the proven facts and integrate them in a way that will trigger a new viewpoint on the subject. Gun control is something that should be enforced across the world in order to save lives. In the United States there is a ratio of 88.8 guns per one hundred persons (GunPolicy.org). Those numbers award us with the highest total per capita number in the world. With that amount of firepower there needs to be an efficient way to regulate who exactly can purchase a gun. Since 1791 when the second amendment was ratified there have been many advancements in general technology especially in firearms. The main controversy associated with the gun control debate revolve around the different interpretations of the constitution. The amendment states, "A well–regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed." Keeping in mind that the guns in that time period were single–shot, made by a gunsmith, and fire by the means of a flintlock. One argument is that gun control is ultimately ineffective because criminals are already planning on breaking the law. This is a valid point, criminals or anyone for that matter with the pure intention of killing, will find a way. However, criminals aren't the only ones responsible for the ... • 32. Gun Control Laws In Australia In Australia and America, gun control laws are very different, therefore, the populations of the two countries have different mindsets regarding gun control and violence. America's gun control laws are based on history while Australia is more open to changing their laws. Because America's gun control laws are stated in the Bill of Rights, the government is more reluctant to change them. Therefore, gun violence is more prevalent in the United States due to the higher prevalence of guns in general. However, Australia has altered its gun control laws as a result of a mass shooting and has not had any ever since. In America, gun control laws allow citizens to easily gain access to firearms. Because firearms are so prevalent, mass shootings are common as well. Other things that are results of lenient gun control laws are increased suicide rate, homicide, and injuries and deaths due to accidentally mishandled firearms (Miller, Hemenway, 2008; Azrael, Hemenway, Miller, 2000; Annest, Hargarten, Hootman, Mercy, Ryan, 2000). 53% of all completed suicides were committed with a firearm. Gun suicide in America during this time accounted 40% more deaths than gun homicide (Miller, Hemenway, 2008). According to CNN, the current deadliest mass shooting in America is the shooting by Stephen Paddock at the Mandalay Bay Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada. 58 people were killed and almost 500 were injured. Also, there are certain groups in America that are moreso affected by American gun control laws. In most events involving firearms, minorities, such of African Americans and those of Latin descent, have been targets. These lenient gun control laws have also led to more terrorist attacks as well as an increased rate of police brutality. The main reason America is so reluctant to alter its gun control laws is because they are instilled in the nation's foundation, the Constitution. In addition, according to research by Celinska, Durkheim focused on the concept of individualism and capitalism in his discussion and spoke of the relationship between society and the individual in capitalistic, industrialized economies (Celinska, 2007). Why Do People Have The Right To Bear Arms Gun Control "Gun control" is the most common term that describes all sort of restrictions on firearms such as what can be bought to possess, resell, and when and where you can buy, carry and store them. Gun control without a doubt is one of the largest and one of the most heated debates of the decade. One of the most recent shooting events took place at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. The American people have witnessed some of the bloodiest and most brutal gun incidents the country has ever seen outside a warzone. The increase in the amount and intensity of great tragedies like these has woken up Americans. The American people have had the right to own a fire arm since the year 1791, under the second amendment which states, "A well– regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed" (Madison). • 38. Examples Of Allusion In Macbeth ALLUSION: A DEATH FAKED FOR YOU Humans are not simple creatures. While being able to sit around aimlessly in pure content is desirable, humans are characters where pretending to be mad or contemplating their own deaths are common. This complexity, of course, can easily apply to anything else. And, being human, we often enjoy going against reality to cut down the corners. That's where allusion in literature comes in. An allusion is a literary device, in which an author makes a brief and indirect a person, place, thing or an idea of historical, cultural, literary or political significance. At first glance, you probably wouldn't have realized that this was an inversion to a quote from the Book of Exodus, when Moses asks God for his name, and the reply is, "I am what I am." This achieves a particular lyrical pattern that causes readers to unconsciously refocus their attention specifically onto Iago. Furthermore, in this parodied and reversed statement, Iago seems to be positioning himself as the opposite of God, or, in other words, the Devil, himself. Allowing readers to realize that this is not the work of a 'wronged' soldier, nor someone who is merely "two–faced", but of one who would willingly carry a scythe to a midday picnic. This reference used by Shakespeare additionally adds emphasis onto Iago's ruthless and manipulative ways that progress the plot as a whole. • 42. Persuasive Essay On Gun Control Gun control is necessary in order to have a peaceful city, country and world. Without gun control, many lives will be taken for unnecessary reasons. Not only should things be settled in a different way, but violence is never the answer. Those who do not support gun control show they are for violence and are not thinking in terms of safeness for all. This is why I am pro–gun control. Gun control is a controversial topic that has been around for decades in the United States and all around the world. The second amendment states, "A well–regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed." (U.S. Const. am. 2)The questions at hand are as follows; what does a "well–regulated militia" entail, should the background checks require more and what are the reasons for gun control? There are two sides to this argument which include the people for gun control who believe guns should be taken off the streets and the ones against gun control who believe it is a right as a citizen of the United States to carry a gun. The first reason gun control should be in existence is because without law saying otherwise, a gun can be in anyone's hands. If stricter gun laws were made, more lives would be saved. Not only should there be a standard background check, but I am also a strong supporter of medical background checks. The Council on Foreign Relations states that, "A so–called "gun show loophole," codified in the Firearm Owners Protection Act of 1986, effectively allows anyone, including convicted felons, to purchase firearms without a background check." ("U.S. Gun Policy: Global Comparisons"). If there are no boundaries to who can have a gun, anyone and everyone is put at risk. Once it is legal for anyone to have a gun, nothing can be done about it. Another reason gun control should be enforced is because if not, a mentally unstable person could get a hold of one and do something out of their control. By allowing someone unstable to have a gun, people are just setting themselves up for disastrous conclusions. Dr. Alan Heister states, "Adam Lanza's actions are explained solely as a manifestation of mental illness" (Huffington Post). If guns ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The method of writing within "The Rape of the Lock" is mock epic and serves the purpose of criticising the negative themes within the poem by revealing them to the extreme. Although Belinda is very superficial she does have an aura that makes her admirable, and Pope does not look over this. She makes it known that she is quite pure and innocent and with this innocence it is easier to overlook to the arguably negative traits that she holds. The social rules within her society mean that she is condoned to act the way she does and through her innocence she does. She is arguably innocent considering sex and her own sexuality even though she portrays as beautiful an image as she can. Her physical gifts though could be argued, in her eyes, to be prettiness and nothing to do with sexuality. Understanding the possibility of her being innocent, there are also undercurrents that she is not so pure as she would have the other people within the poem believe. Those who fight against gun control, with a shrug of helplessness, are dooming more kids to horrible deaths and more parents to unspeakable grief. It's really, and inarguably, just as simple as that. Interestingly enough, the proponents of less gun control are often those on the more conservative side of the political spectrum. Conservative people, when in groups big enough can become a majority in a state, thus making it a "red", conservative state. A large area of Conservative states is in the south. Most of the southern states are controlled with a more conservative bias. Interestingly enough, the south is the most violent region in the United States. "This study looked at deaths due to assault in different regions of the country. Just as the United States is a clear outlier in the international context, the South is a clear outlier in the national context" (Klein). Not only is the United States the most violent of the developed countries when Estonia and Mexico are excluded, but the more conservative states are the ones that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Conversations like that had been going on this corner of town for the last couple of days. The reason for this was that a frequent visitor had taken a liking to the "Shiny Sun Pub", a rundown bar that paid no honor to its name. In fact, the only shining thing in this place was the delusions of its owner and manager. Sitting with his hair disheveled was a man nearing his 30's. His clouded gaze was locked onto his glass of beer, as if he was currently lost in his thoughts or drunk enough to fall into a state of lethargy. It had been like this for the past few days. He would come early into town before plopping himself into a forgotten corner of this bar. Then, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Instead, his eyes drifted towards the ground. "Disregarding what you've been taught under our faith, you dealt with a demon and helped him accomplish his despicable goals." Hands clenching into fists, Xue Ming seemed as if he was about to speak. However, he was stopped by the hand of the old enforcer who placed it onto his shoulder, as if to show that it wasn't his place to speak yet. "Little Ming, how do you intend to plea?" The warm feminine voice resounded once more, as if she was giving him a chance to redeem himself. Xue Ming lifted his gaze, a wry smile on his face, as he looked at the silhouette from where the warm feminine voice came. "Not guilty, I did what had to be done." His voice was firm, lacking any possible guilt. This time gasps came from everyone in the room except the young female who'd spoken before. Only a sigh could be heard if you focused on her

Gay, Bisexual, And Transgender Youth Suicide Essay Introduction Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender youth suicide continues to be a problem in many different countries but very limited data has been gathered about this social issue internationally. While it is well–known that it is still ongoing problem in many countries such as: Israel where a study of 1,134 teenagers were surveyed and results show that 20% of these teenagers have attempted suicide, which is 112 times the rate of the general population. The study also showed that the rate is even higher for LGBT teenagers who have religious backgrounds (Roberts, 2012). In Australia, LGBT youth have the highest rates of suicidality. 20% of transgendered and 15.7% of lesbian, gay and bisexual Australians have reported current suicidal ideation. Same–sex attracted Australians have up to fourteen times higher rates of suicide attempts compared to heterosexual peers. The rate is six times higher for homosexual adolescents (Rosenstreich, 2013). Lastly, In New Zealand; of the young people who completed the 2012 survey "Young People Attracted to the Same Sex or Both Sexes Report", 59.4% had said they have deliberately self–harmed in the previous twelve months and 47.7% have reported suicidal ideation (Ministry of Youth Development, 2015). Wong's Hugo Strange was a major scene–stealer in "Mr. Freeze" and he is up to no good. Wong recently spoke to Comic Book Resources, where he discussed what makes Strange tick and Theo Galavan's possible transformation into DC comic book character Azrael. "He's a mad scientist in that he's obsessed with some kind of thing he sees as progress," Wong said of Strange before explaining the villain's mindset. "'I'm going to be the guy who believes science is changing the world. I don't really care what the consequences of what I'm doing are. I'm changing the world.' There's something God–like about that," he said. Although Strange did not appear in the midseason finale of Gotham Season 2, he was referred to by his right–hand person Miss Peabody (Tonya Pinkins), who stated, "Professor Strange has high hopes for this one," when presented with Galavan's body. • 63. John Donne's 'Death Be Not Proud' Fears are everywhere they can start at birth with the fear of the dark and even can be seen in the most confident and strong adults. The speaker uses the intricate duo of the personification of death and a striking metaphor comparing death to sleep to illustrate the comforting yet minimal importance of death to demonstrate the significance of living a life without the constant fear of dying and to seize the day. The poem starts right away with the personification of death, giving a once bodiless idea a human form. In the very first line of the sonnet the speaker says "Death be not proud, though some have called thee / Mighty and dreadful, for thou art not so"(1–2) in this instance, the speaker is being respectful all while showing that death is not "Mighty and dreadful"(2). In this section of the poem the speaker is right up close to death, face to face, a fear among most humans, and is telling one on one that he is not scared anymore. He is declaring that death should be more humble as death is not as important as he believes. The use of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 65. Analysis Of A Lock Of Hair And A Wounded Heart A Lock of Hair and a Wounded Heart Throughout the course of history and its literature, authors and poets have served as messengers for the times in which they lived, whether it be about political upheaval or social constructs or the lives of the common man. One way this was accomplished was through satire. Alexander Pope, whom of which lived in the literary Restoration period and wrote the poem, "The Rape of the Lock," in 1714, provides a work as an excellent example of satire. He parodies the upper classes favorite literature (epic, heroic poetry) to mock the absurdity and irrationality of the upper class. Using the common tropes of divine intervention, hyperbole, and lofty language, a gleefully sarcastic tone emerges to allow the reader to see through the faux seriousness regarding the loss of a strand of hair from a noble woman. In numerous works of epic poetry and that of the classic style, an invocation to divine spirits and gods invited a sense of vindication and importance in a work. Works like Homer's long beloved Odyssey among others almost completely rely on divine intervention to effectuate the plot and justify actions of either the protagonist or the antagonist. Pope crafitly uses this common tactic in such works to parody the highbrow love for them. In the case of Belinda, her beauty is such to rival nymphs and Aphrodite; she is incontestably divine in human form, made of love and youth and flowering nature. That beauty, however, is soiled when a lock from ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

As a result a social worker should analyze prudently the use and misuse of power in the client's life (critical consciousness) and promote engagement to foster social justice (Wagaman, 2016). As stated by Wagaman (2016), the positive wellbeing of LGB youth can be ensured through such services in accordance with their empowerment. The story opens with an immediate foreshadowing of the family's downfall through the grandmothers introduction of the outlaw known as "the misfit". The grandmother herself servers as a median who unknowingly foresees the family's fate throughout the story, as well as causes of it. The first sentence presents this role as the story narrates "The Grandmother didn't want to go to Florida." , a statement that wouldn't have great significance without the grandmothers perceived role. Her role as an oracle is furthered as the story progresses to the day of the trip, as she dresses in preparation for "In case of an accident, anyone seeing her ... This cry to Jesus in her time of despair displays her desperation to be saved from her descent to hell. The Misfit himself serves as the angel Azrael, taking the family to Heaven or Hell. The Grandmother sees this and begins referring to him as a "good" man who "wouldn't hurt a lady". In her final moments, she has an epiphany, and begins to love him as one of her own children. As she realizes this, she tells him "Why you're one of my babies. You're one of my own children !" "Why you're one of my babies. You're one of my own children !" (45). This sudden love of her fellow man and forgiveness for his past actions as she reaches out her hand to forgive him serves as her moment of redemption. As she lay on the floor in her own puddle of blood, "with her legs crossed under her like a child's and her face smiling up at the cloudless sky.", she knows she has been forgiven. In that one moment, she had experienced more growth than she ever had before in her life, and redeemed herself in the eyes of God. Her love of him as one of her own children serves as the reason for her position after her death. • 71. The Nature of Death in Emily Dickinson's Poems Essay Emily Dickinson once said, "Dying is a wild night and a new road." Some people welcome death with open arms while others cower in fear when confronted in the arms of death. Through the use of ambiguity, metaphors, personification and paradoxes Emily Dickinson still gives readers a sense of vagueness on how she feels about dying. Emily Dickinson inventively expresses the nature of death in the poems, "I felt a Funeral, in my Brain (280)", "I Heard a fly Buzz–When I Died–(465)" and "Because I could not stop for Death–(712)". Emily Dickinson, who achieved more fame after her death, is said to be one of the greatest American poets of all time. Dickinson's poems provide that secret gateway to the supernatural that Ferlazzo is referring to. In the poem "I felt a Funeral, in my Brain," Emily Dickinson uses symbolism to convey some sort of mental funeral that the speaker is experiencing. The funeral image that Dickinson depicts in the first line of the poem: "I felt a Funeral, in my Brain," does not literally represent a funeral, but it is used to symbolism a mental breakdown and agony that the speaker is going through. By using this symbolism, the speaker is imagining the death of old ways of thought. Dickinson writes that when the funeral service was "like a Drum–" (Dickinson 43) and that it "Kept beating–beating–till I thought My Mind was going numb–" (43), leaving readers believing that the speaker is going mad. By depicting this image, Dickinson reveals that with the death of old thought; there is some sort of numbness or pain that is necessary to "progress to a better state" (Goldfarb 2). By repeating the beating sound two times, along with the rhyming sequence in the previous lines of the poem, Dickinson is stressing the numbness and the importance of it. Dickinson uses ambiguity to stress the difficulty of knowing and understanding certain experiences and thoughts to the reader. By being deliberately elusive, Dickinson makes the speaker out to be some sort of hero. In a critical essay of "I felt a Funeral, in my Brain," Sheldon Goldfarb ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 73. Essay on Exploring Death in Death in Venice Exploring Death in Death in Venice Death in Venice by Thomas Mann, is a story that deals with mortality on many different levels. There is the obvious physical death by cholera, and the cyclical death in nature: in the beginning it is spring and in the end, autumn. We see a kind of death of the ego in Gustav Aschenbach's dreams. Venice itself is a personification of death, and death is seen as the leitmotif in musical terms. It is also reflected in the idea of the traveler coming to the end of a long fatiguing journey. It must also be noted there are no women in the story with prominent roles. It is ironic that Aschenbach, who had written his book The Abject "as a rebuke to the excess of a psychology–ridden age" (13) succumbs to an egoless state, not only in the last grotesque dream, but directly after it in his conscious mind as well. From this point on, Gustav becomes totally shameless. (We have seen this theme of loss of shame as being a kind of death, and actually leading to literal death as well, in Salman Rushdie's Shame.) Mann's use of Venice as a backdrop is critical. Venice, an ancient city, inexorably sinking beneath the water, a "forbidden spot" (38) with "stagnant lagoons" (28) the "fallen queen of the sea" (36). Venice, with a "faintly rotten scent" (37) "half fairy tale, half snare" (55) "that hid sickness for love of gain . . . (56). The city that had "a disreputable secret [like] his own" (57). In musical terms, death is the leitmotif, the theme keeps reappearing: heard in the overture (the first stranger Aschenbach sees in Munich), continually sounded in the Venetian passages (more odd men), swelling to a crescendo of hysterical laughter and swirling pipes of Pan, and, in the ... • 75. Essay on The Rape of the Lock The Rape of the Lock Alexander Pope's mock heroic epic The Rape of the Lock appears to be a light subject addressed with a satiric tone and structure. Pope often regards the unwanted cutting of a woman's hair as a trivial thing, but the fashionable world takes it seriously. Upon closer examination Pope has, perhaps unwittingly, broached issues worthy of earnest consideration. The Rape of the Lock at first glance is a commentary on human vanity and the ritual of courtship. The poem also discusses the relationship between men and women, which is the more substantial matter in particular. Pope examines the oppressed position of women. Now awful Beauty puts on all its arms... (I, 137–39) We see a woman ready to go into the battle of the sexes whom the Baron (her opponent) already regards as a threat. Specifically, her beauty is a threat in that it empowers Belinda and means he may have to compete with other men for her affection. The idea of a woman holding power of any sort over a man attacks the male ego or at least threatens the Baron's ego. He is Resolved to win, or by fraud betray; For when success a lover's toil attends, Few ask if fraud or force attained his ends. Poem also satirise the moral bankruptcy of the ladies of the time. "Ariel wonders Belinda will break Diana's law or some china jar shall receive a flaw; whether she shall stain the honour or new brocade; whether she shall forget her prayers or miss a dance party; whether she shall loose her heart or her necklace". These lines show how easily and irreparably chastity might be lost in the world of fashion. In the 18th century honour to a lady was publically worn accessory like her brocade which could be easily stained. The character of Belinda is the courageous woman of The Rape of the Lock. Pope constructs her character in light of the authentic Arabella Fermor, the little girl of a noble Catholic gang. Robert, Lord Petre, a family companion, cut a lock of her hair without authorization, along these lines bringing about a crack between their two families. • 79. Should Guns Be Guns On College Campuses? On January 23rd of this year, Florida State passed a bill allowing students with permits to carry concealed guns on college campuses. I am writing this from the library of a college campus in Florida two months after that bill was passed. Instead of concentrating on my work, I find my eyes wandering to my classmates. I am wondering which one of them is carrying a gun in the library. Is it the man in the corner reading a calculus book? How about the woman across from me typing away on the library computer? How safe am I on my college campus, a place where I should be free to learn and not worry for my safety? The argument for guns on campuses is that adult gun owners with permits should be allowed to carry on campus to defend against a shooter. This stems from a shooting at a USF campus earlier in the year. Would that gun man have been stopped if students had been carrying guns? Is there any promise that someone who qualifies to carry a gun on campus won't turn their weapon on a fellow student? I ask myself these questions trying to determine what I believe to be the right answer to the gun law. No, guns should not be allowed on a college campus, we should be free to learn without feeling that we need to defend ourselves from our classmates. My afternoon in the library is a perfect example of how a law allowing guns on a college campus can create paranoia and an uncomfortable learning environment.
