Victor Canning was born in 1911 in Plymouth, England. He was the eldest child in his family and his father worked as a taxi driver. During World War I, Victor and his sisters lived with his uncle in Calstock while his father served as an ambulance driver in France. After the war, the family returned to Plymouth and later moved to Oxford in the 1920s where Victor attended school and showed academic promise, though ultimately he had to start working instead of attending university due to his family's financial circumstances.

However, he was assassinated in 1922 by anti-treaty IRA forces during the Irish Civil War. A statue was later erected in his honor in his hometown of Clonakilty.

environment for investigating the changes in vegetation cover dynamics. Our study utilizes
advanced technologies such as GIS (Geographic Information Systems) and Remote sensing to
analyze the transformations that have taken place over the course of a decade.
The complex relationship between human activities and the environment has been the focus
of extensive research and worry. As the global community grapples with swift urbanization,
population expansion, and economic progress, the effects on natural ecosystems are becoming
more evident. A crucial element of this impact is the alteration of vegetation cover, which plays a
significant role in maintaining the ecological equilibrium of our planet.Land serves as the foundation for all human activities and provides the necessary materials for
these activities. As the most crucial natural resource, its utilization by humans results in different
'Land uses,' which are determined by both human activities and the physical characteristics of the
land.
The utilization of land is impacted by human needs and environmental factors. In countries
like India, rapid population growth and the emphasis on extensive resource exploitation can lead
to significant land degradation, adversely affecting the region's land cover.
Therefore, human intervention has significantly influenced land use patterns over many
centuries, evolving its structure over time and space. In the present era, these changes have
accelerated due to factors such as agriculture and urbanization. Information regarding land use and
cover is essential for various planning and management tasks related to the Earth's surface,
providing crucial environmental data for scientific, resource management, policy purposes, and
diverse human activities.

of any area. Consequently, a wide range of professionals, including earth system scientists, land

- 3. Victor canning – Biography • • Victor Canning was born on 16th June 1911, in Plymouth, Devon, the eldest child of Fred Canning, and his wife Mabel, née Gold. The address of the family according to the 1911 census which took place just before Victor's birth was 6 Row den Street, Peverell, Plymouth, and his father's profession was given as "taxidriver", though elsewhere he described himself as "coach-builder". During WW1 his father served as an ambulance driver in France and Flanders, while Victor with his two sisters went to live in the village of Cal stock ten miles north of Plymouth, where his uncle Cecil Goold worked for the railways and later became station master. After the war the family returned to Plymouth. In the mid 1920s they moved to Oxford where his father had found work, and Victor attended the Oxford Central School. Here he was encouraged to stay on at school and go to university by a classical scholar, Dr. Bernard Henderson, who promised to get Victor a place at Oxford University, but the family could not afford it and instead he went to work as a clerk in the education office at age 16, first in Oxford, later in Weston-superMare.
