This document provides a history of the Mulvey and Farrell families from Ireland, including a timeline of key events in Irish history from the 1840s Potato Famine to the 1970s. It details the lineages and life events of individual family members, many of whom emigrated from Ireland to the United States in the late 19th/early 20th century, settling primarily in New York. 2. History Timeline 1845-1849: A potato blight kills Ireland's staple food crop. About a million people die from starvation and fever during the Great Potato Famine. 1916: The Easter Rebellion. Armed Irish patriots rebel against British troops in Dublin, Ireland, on the Monday after Easter. The British execute rebel leaders. 1919-1921: The Anglo-Irish War between the British and the Irish Republican Army. In a treaty, Britain finally gives up control of most of Ireland but tightens its grip on the six counties of Ulster (Northern Ireland).

3. History Timeline, con’t. 1921-1923: Irish Civil War between those who accept the treaty with the English and the Irish Republican Army, which wants all of Ireland to be free of British rule. The Republicans lose. 1949: Britain declares Ulster a permanent part of the British Empire. The lower 26 counties of Ireland declare themselves the Irish Republic, totally free of British control. 1972: During anti-British protests in the Ulster town of Londonderry on January 30, 13 unarmed marchers are killed by British troops, an event now known as Bloody Sunday. Britain imposes direct rule on Ulster. A more intense era of bloodshed begins. The Irish call this violence the Troubles.

6. James Mulvey Born in 1839 in Finisklin, Kiltoghert Parish, Co. Leitrim. Son Michael was born in Finisklin, 1866 House in Finisklin no longer exists. Died in 1890, age 51. Ballinwing house bought by his widow Catherine and son James (aged 24) in 1908 or 1909.

15. Michael Mulvey b.1866 Born October 27, 1866 in Finisklin Came to U.S. in 1887, aged 21 Married Margaret Lenahan, also from Ireland, in 1891, when age 25. Naturalized American citizen, Oct 27, 1892 Chief engineer at the first Edison power plant in NYC Thomas Edison devised the first commercial power plant that would set the standard for today's electric industry. First opened on September 4, 1882 on pearl street in lower Manhattan By 1889, the pearl street station had evolved from a nighttime generator to a 24-hour facility, and expanded to become Edison general electric. 1892: it merged with its leading competitor, Thompson-Houston, and became today's General Electric Company.

19. John Mulvey b. 1867 Emigrated to NYC Father of James Mulvey, president of Samuel Goldwyn Productions and Director of the Board for Brooklyn Dodgers. Died in an accident when his son James was a young man.

20. Frank Mulvey b. 1875 and Jane T. Farrell b. 1882 Frank arrived in N.Y. on Feb 20, 1892, age 17 Jane Farrell immigrated 1899 Frank: Naturalized citizen Aug 5, 1901 Started out as a “Fireman,” which was what they called apprentice engineers. Chief stationary engineer for A. Schrader & Co. (auto tire valves) for 40 years.

23. Patrick Mulvey b. 1887 and Mary Costello An apprentice blacksmith before leaving Ireland Came to the U.S. to work as engineer at the first Edison power plant in NYC. (Brother Michael already there). Met Mary Costello in NYC where she was working as a governess They returned to Ireland and got married 1910 Patrick opened a bicycle shop in Carrick Reluctantly returned to NYC with daughter Mary when business did not prosper Daughter Mary b. 1914, died in 1920 – diphtheria epidemic 3 other children: Margaret 1916-98, James 1917-96, Lawrence 1924-2003. Never wanted to leave Ireland Buried in the Bronx (St. Raymonds) with their daughter.

25. James Mulvey 1884-1971 Remained at Ballinwing At 19, the youngest member of the Carrick-on-Shannon District Board of Guardians. One of the first peace commissioners appointed on the formation of the free state. During the War of Independence, he hid Irish soldiers from the British “Black and Tan.” Founder-member of Midland and Western Livestock Improvement Society Official of the Kiltoghert Cooperative Creamery for over 60 years Registered as Official Judge at cattle shows throughout Ireland as a member of the Aberdeen Angus Breeders Society. Married Elizabeth Farrell (mother of his sons and daughter) and after her death (1932) married Bridie Farrell in New York (1936).

32. Earliest Farrell Records William Farrell’s son William married Ellen Armstrong. Their son was John Farrell (1839-1936) John married Teresa Hogg (1857-1911) John was 18 years older than Teresa, but Teresa died young, at age 54.

Mary Farrell (1880/81 – 1964/65) Oldest Farrell, came to U.S. around the age of 15 Moved to NYC and worked as a Domestic in a Rectory Met Owen O’Beirne (native of Roscommon) in NY when she was in her 20’s Didn’t meet little sister Tess till Tess was 10-15 years old. Mary died very soon after sister Jane in her 80’s.

38. Mary Farrell and Owen O’Beirne, con’t Owen O’Beirne was the youngest of 16 Started a Restaurant business in NY with an older brother. Became millionaires, and owned a mansion in Hartsdale, Westchester Co. NY. Lost business and fortune during the Depression Jane Farrell had a cabinet full of fine china from this business in her home.

41. Bridie and Tess Farrell Bridie and her sister Tess Farrell went to nursing school in NYC and became nurses. Bridie was an Army nurse during WWI Bridie also was nurse to James Mulvey’s (MGM, Dodgers fame) wife, Dearie McKeever. Bridie became the second wife of James Mulvey Jr. of Ballinwing in 1936.

44. Tom Farrell, 1893-1918, Died WWI age 25 Emigrated to U.S. and was drafted into U.S. Army - WWI Died and buried in France despite being listed on Farrell Kiltoghert gravestone.

55. John Donnelly 1919-2005 Raised in Belfast orphanage till age 13 Employed as farm worker at Ballinwing starting about 1939 (age 20-21). Decided to emigrate to England, but Mulveys suggested U.S., where Mulveys could sponsor him. Arrived New York Harbor 1948, 29 yrs. old Lived briefly in NYC with Bill O’Beirne, son of Mary Farrell and Owen O’Beirne, and later with Jane Farrell Mulvey until he got married in 1955. Met wife, Dorothy, at Griggs in Glen Lake while there with the Mulveys.
