Early nursing education in the 1900s reflected Florence Nightingale's values of character over skills and emphasized obedience, duty, and loyalty to physicians. Nurses were expected to be gentle, virtuous women who were socialized to obey doctors without question. Until the 1950s, nurses learned their craft in the classroom and at the hospital, which served as their workplace, school, and home, separated from their own families and communities. Loyalty to physicians was considered a nurse's primary duty throughout this period.
