Building a Portfolio for Academic and Clinical
Partnership
College of Nursing, KEMU, Lahore
Objectives
At the completion of this unit learners will be able to:
1. Define portfolio with its examples.
2. Explain benefits of portfolio in academic and clinical partnership.
3. Describe the role of an academic partner and role of clinical partner.
4. Elaborate the significance of the clinical nurse leader in academic
partnerships.
5. Identify elements and frameworks to consider when designing
markers of success.
6. Discuss techniques used to manage academic and clinical
partnerships.
Introduction
Many view the central concept of the port folio as that of
personal and professional reflection" or a determination
of how well activities and programs have met their stated
goals. The specific definition used, the portfolio must
have a clearly stated purpose such as the evaluation of
outcomes of a clinical and academic partnership.
Portfolios can be used to assess competencies of any
profession.
THE PORTFOLIO
• A collection of evidence of both the products and
processes of learning such that past experiences
form the basis for continued development and new
experiences.
• The portfolio process is one method to validate
personal and professional accomplishments in an
interactive, multidimensional manner.
Benefits of an academic and clinical
partnership.
• In the profession of nursing, academic-service
partnerships are most often defined as strategic
relationships between educational and clinical
practice settings that are established to advance
their mutual interests related to practice, education,
and research.
• the benefits that were cited by the American
Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) in
1990 remain true today.
These includes….
• strength and power in mutual goal setting,
• increased visibility and esteem for nursing's contribution to
health care delivery.
• maximization of resources.
• enhanced opportunity for educators to remain current in
practice,
• cost effective quality care and education of students and
staff. increased research productivity.
• development of patterns of excellence
• improving organizational efficiencies.
• providing greater opportunities for innovations and
new ways of thinking and doing.
• Enhanced recruitment and retention.
Role of academic partner
• Academic institutions that are visionary and
welcome partnerships form rich collaborative
relationships that become the foundations for
successful enterprises. Strong partnerships
create dynamic portfolios beneficial to
societal needs and benchmarks for others .
Roles are following …
• Partnership and portfolios do not magically
emerge.
• The academic partner must be in a ready state to
address needs.
• A personal belief that partnerships are essential can
be a powerful tenet and is useful when agendas and
goals are in conflict.
• Void the belief and a natural blaming culture.
• The framework should include a common purpose ,
identified values and beliefs a plan to engage and
educate staff.
• If systems change is required, pilots can offer
opportunities for evolution , role clarity, system
efficiency , communications flow and satisfaction
Role of the clinical partner
These are the roles of clinical partner:
 the clinical partner must begin the partnership process by conducting
an assessment of its resources, strength and weaknesses.
 Clinical partner collect information.
 It include assignment of an individual
a) function as a liaison.
b) Establishments of goals.
c) Data to be collected for evaluation of outcomes.
Significance of clinical Nurse Leader in
academic partnership
The significance of clinical nurse leader can be
comprehenced through following points as she:
• Supervises the enrolled nurses and nursing assistants.
• Develops comprehensive reports on medical errors.
• Builds safer health systems and quality improvement
strategies.
• Have higher skills for quality improvement.
• Plays an important role in risk assessment and team work.
• Establishes evidence based practice and promote
interprofessional communication.
• Figures out why the infection gets high by having cause analysis.
• While utilizing evidence based practice she introduces helping
measures in infection control. In short ,clinical nurse leader is
the key person in the transition of care.
Role of academic partner in relation to
development process
Academic partner plays much important role in development process as:
• Strong partnership creates dynamic portfolios beneficial to societal needs
benchmarks for those who transform knowledge skills and best practices
into innovative models.
• When academic partner is open to change and sustains partnership , it
enhances cost efficiency, communication and responsiveness' to identified
needs and improved access to development opportunities through
partnership
• Partnership and portfolios don't magically emerge. The
academic partner must be in ready state to address needs
and open to change when contacted by an agency. Change
may require shifting from the traditional approaches.
• Partnership can be useful when agencies and goals are in
conflict.
Designing marker of success
• First marker of success for designing portfolio is partnerships should
question assumptions, beliefs, and values and consider multiple points of
view while attempting to verify reasoning.
• Boundaries are another critical consideration.
• They must be explicitly identified, and challenges to meeting target
outcomes must be considered.
Goldsmith key consideration
Goldsmith identified three key considerations that should be
addressed
1. Control results, not processes.
2. Be flexible while remaining accountable.
3. Design markers that are purposeful and meaningful to the
partnership.
• Partnership evolves, success is realized, innovation
is introduced, and outcomes are demonstrated.
• Creativity must be stimulated by both the academic
and clinical participants.
• Infrastructures are created without seeking input or
considering needs of stakeholders.
Managing academic and clinical partners.
Techniques to manage academic and clinical partnership.....
• Identifying a lead individual or champion is an initial step.
• Selection can require delicate facilitation, influence, and persuasion.
• Otherwise, conflicts manifest and paralysis occurs, leading to
unmet goals and frustrated partners.
• The selected leader or champion must be knowledgeable of both the
academic and clinical setting.
• The designated leader or champion must engage all
partners to build systems and processes that will support the
identified goal.
• Communication at all levels is central to success.
• Without open communication, roles become blurred .
• The partner leader or champion takes the shared vision and
communicates it with others while continuously creating
and mapping outcomes.
• Webster defines synergy as the interaction of agencies,
agents, or conditions such that the total effect is greater
than the sum of the individual effects.
• The synergy model can be used as a template when
managing academic and clinical partners." It pairs the
needs of both organizations with the talents of faculty
and staff.
Summary
Academic and clinical partnerships are not new. The
clinical nurse leader role has propelled the need and
importance for education and practice to improve patient
outcomes. Academic and clinical partners improve
collaboration by increased availability of faculty to teach
nursing students. These partnerships, built on a portfolio
model, can increase competency and training availability
for nursing staff and improve community relations.

Introduction Many view the central concept of the port folio as that of personal and professional reflection" or a determination of how well activities and programs have met their stated goals. The specific definition used, the portfolio must have a clearly stated purpose such as the evaluation of outcomes of a clinical and academic partnership. Portfolios can be used to assess competencies of any profession.
  • 4. THE PORTFOLIO • A collection of evidence of both the products and processes of learning such that past experiences form the basis for continued development and new experiences. • The portfolio process is one method to validate personal and professional accomplishments in an interactive, multidimensional manner.
  • 5. Benefits of an academic and clinical partnership. • In the profession of nursing, academic-service partnerships are most often defined as strategic relationships between educational and clinical practice settings that are established to advance their mutual interests related to practice, education, and research. • the benefits that were cited by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) in 1990 remain true today.

  • 8. Role of academic partner • Academic institutions that are visionary and welcome partnerships form rich collaborative relationships that become the foundations for successful enterprises. Strong partnerships create dynamic portfolios beneficial to societal needs and benchmarks for others .

Roles are following … • Partnership and portfolios do not magically emerge. • The academic partner must be in a ready state to address needs. • A personal belief that partnerships are essential can be a powerful tenet and is useful when agendas and goals are in conflict. • Void the belief and a natural blaming culture.
  • 10. • The framework should include a common purpose , identified values and beliefs a plan to engage and educate staff. • If systems change is required, pilots can offer opportunities for evolution , role clarity, system efficiency , communications flow and satisfaction

Role of the clinical partner These are the roles of clinical partner:  the clinical partner must begin the partnership process by conducting an assessment of its resources, strength and weaknesses.  Clinical partner collect information.  It include assignment of an individual a) function as a liaison. b) Establishments of goals. c) Data to be collected for evaluation of outcomes.

Significance of clinical Nurse Leader in academic partnership The significance of clinical nurse leader can be comprehenced through following points as she: • Supervises the enrolled nurses and nursing assistants. • Develops comprehensive reports on medical errors. • Builds safer health systems and quality improvement strategies. • Have higher skills for quality improvement.
  • 13. • Plays an important role in risk assessment and team work. • Establishes evidence based practice and promote interprofessional communication. • Figures out why the infection gets high by having cause analysis. • While utilizing evidence based practice she introduces helping measures in infection control. In short ,clinical nurse leader is the key person in the transition of care.

Role of academic partner in relation to development process Academic partner plays much important role in development process as: • Strong partnership creates dynamic portfolios beneficial to societal needs benchmarks for those who transform knowledge skills and best practices into innovative models. • When academic partner is open to change and sustains partnership , it enhances cost efficiency, communication and responsiveness' to identified needs and improved access to development opportunities through partnership
  • 15. • Partnership and portfolios don't magically emerge. The academic partner must be in ready state to address needs and open to change when contacted by an agency. Change may require shifting from the traditional approaches. • Partnership can be useful when agencies and goals are in conflict.

Designing marker of success • First marker of success for designing portfolio is partnerships should question assumptions, beliefs, and values and consider multiple points of view while attempting to verify reasoning. • Boundaries are another critical consideration. • They must be explicitly identified, and challenges to meeting target outcomes must be considered.
  • 17. Goldsmith key consideration Goldsmith identified three key considerations that should be addressed 1. Control results, not processes. 2. Be flexible while remaining accountable. 3. Design markers that are purposeful and meaningful to the partnership.
  • 18. • Partnership evolves, success is realized, innovation is introduced, and outcomes are demonstrated. • Creativity must be stimulated by both the academic and clinical participants. • Infrastructures are created without seeking input or considering needs of stakeholders.
  • 19. Managing academic and clinical partners. Techniques to manage academic and clinical partnership..... • Identifying a lead individual or champion is an initial step. • Selection can require delicate facilitation, influence, and persuasion. • Otherwise, conflicts manifest and paralysis occurs, leading to unmet goals and frustrated partners. • The selected leader or champion must be knowledgeable of both the academic and clinical setting.
  • 20. • The designated leader or champion must engage all partners to build systems and processes that will support the identified goal. • Communication at all levels is central to success. • Without open communication, roles become blurred . • The partner leader or champion takes the shared vision and communicates it with others while continuously creating and mapping outcomes.
  • 21. • Webster defines synergy as the interaction of agencies, agents, or conditions such that the total effect is greater than the sum of the individual effects. • The synergy model can be used as a template when managing academic and clinical partners." It pairs the needs of both organizations with the talents of faculty and staff.
  • 22. Summary Academic and clinical partnerships are not new. The clinical nurse leader role has propelled the need and importance for education and practice to improve patient outcomes. Academic and clinical partners improve collaboration by increased availability of faculty to teach nursing students. These partnerships, built on a portfolio model, can increase competency and training availability for nursing staff and improve community relations.
