Isa 51:1 “Harken” …
Intro.
Gen 3:17
17 And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened
unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of
which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it:
cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat
of it all the days of thy life;
Harkened included much more than just hearing, he
followed her leading.
Gen 21:12
12 And God said unto Abraham, Let it not be grievous in
thy sight because of the lad, and because of thy
bondwoman; in all that Sarah hath said unto thee,
hearken unto her voice; for in Isaac shall thy seed be
called.
“in all that Sarah hath said” Abraham was to follow all
of the things Sarah wanted done; action is connected
to “harkening”.
Isa 50:10
10 Who is among you that feareth the LORD,
that obeyeth the voice of his servant,
that walketh in darkness, and hath no light?
let him trust in the name of the LORD, and stay upon his
God.

Isa 51:1
The call-a telling envelope
1 Hearken to me,
The censorship- to:
ye that follow after righteousness,
ye that seek the LORD:
The command- directions
look unto the rock whence ye are hewn,
and to the hole of the pit whence ye are digged.
The example: Abraham and Sarah
Only one man, called away from all he knew.
Isa 51:2
2 Look unto Abraham your father, and unto Sarah that
bare you: for I called him alone, and blessed him, and
increased him.
Gen 2:18 And the LORD God said, It is not good
that the man should be alone; I will make him an
help meet for him. KJV
Gen 32:24 And Jacob was left alone; and there
wrestled a man with him until the breaking of the day.
KJV
Exod 24:2 And Moses alone shall come near the
LORD: but they shall not come nigh; neither shall the
people go up with him. KJV
Matt 14:23 And when he had sent the multitudes
away, he went up into a mountain apart to pray: and
when the evening was come, he was there alone. KJV
The fear of loneliness is unreasonable when you have
God, the “friend that sticketh closer than a brother”.
The fear is “no comfort or companionship” without a
crowd.
Isa 51:3
The Balm
3 For the LORD shall comfort Zion:
he will comfort all her waste places;
The blessings
and he will make her wilderness like Eden, and her desert
like the garden of the LORD; joy and gladness shall be
found therein, thanksgiving, and the voice of melody.
ye are hewn- not were, the process is on going
ye are digged- not were; the act is complete but is recent
history
II. The Explanation- Isa 51:4
Isa 51:4
4 Hearken unto me,
my people;
and give ear unto me,
O my nation:
for a law shall proceed from me,
and I will make my judgment to rest for a light of
the people.
His people expect to hear instruction that is not a
suggestion but LAW.
The light comes after obedience to law; obedience
with out understandingis more honorable than you
being the judge of good and evil.
III. The Epilogue- Isa 51:7
Isa 51:7
7 Hearken unto me,
ye that know righteousness,
the people in whose heart is my law;
fear ye not the reproach of men,
neither be ye afraid of their revilings.
Now law has become ingrained in their heart, the
rebuke of not knowing the scripture is not necessary.
Most men need to be warned that they will be
accountable to the rule book (nothing wakes up an
audience like the phrase “there will be a quiz at the
end of this lecture”).
But these people know the Law; their warning is Don’t
harken to the wicked.
Reproach- rebuke
Revilings- rail
The fact is losers continue to lose.
In order to “not be afraid” of something, you need a
more powerful fact than the thing causing fear.
Isa 51:6
6 Lift up your eyes to the heavens, and look upon the
earth beneath: for the heavens shall vanish away like
smoke, and the earth shall wax old like a garment, and
they that dwell therein shall die in like manner: but my
salvation shall be for ever, and my righteousness shall
not be abolished.
God’s small creatures will take care of the wicked.
Isa 51:8
8 For the moth shall eat them up like a garment, and the
worm shall eat them like wool…
Isa 51:12-13
12 I, even I, am he that comforteth you: who art thou, that
thou shouldest be afraid of a man that shall die, and of the
son of man which shall be made as grass;
13 And forgettest the LORD thy maker, that hath
stretched forth the heavens, and laid the foundations of
the earth; and hast feared continually every day because
of the fury of the oppressor, as if he were ready to
destroy? and where is the fury of the oppressor?
An elite club to be proud of
Isa 51:8
8 …my righteousness shall be for ever, and my
salvation from generation to generation.
The Lord’s Righteousness- the element that separates
the Godly from the phony and the profane, is as
eternal as the Lord’s salvation.
Ps 34:19
19 Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the LORD
delivereth him out of them all.
My heart can sing when I pause to remember
A heartache here is but a stepping stone
Along a trail that's winding always upward,
This troubled world is not my final home.
The things of earth will dim and lose their value
If we recall they're borrowed for awhile;
And things of earth that cause the heart to tremble,
Remembered there will only bring a smile.
This weary world with all its toil and struggle
May take its toll of misery and strife;
The soul of man is like a waiting falcon;
When it's released, it's destined for the skies.
Chorus
But until then my heart will go on singing,
Until then with joy I'll carry on,
Until the day my eyes behold the city,
Until the day God calls me home.
