VOCABULARY PROVIDED BY THE USE OF HAIKU POEMS WITH 7TH GRADERS
AT PROGRAMA DE EDUCACIÓN ABIERTA IN CIUDAD COLÓN IN 2017.
JORGE VINICIO CAMPOS ARIAS
SAN JOSÉ, SETIEMBRE 2017
INTRODUCTION
For many years students from Educación Abierta
have dealt with the necessity to face English, most of
them are really afraid of learning a new language, the
most significant problem they have is the lack of
sources of vocabulary, this is why the main purpose
of this research is to provide a very well designed
guide for teachers to apply Haiku poems in their
classes.
JUSTIFICATION
This research is very important because students will
be able to learn and practice the target language in a
different way that the ones they have seen in
previous years or systems like high schools.
PROBLEM STATEMENT
When we are talking about types of literature to
teach English to adult students who had never been
involved in English classes or they are limited by the
lack of vocabulary or even the lack of interest, many
ideas come to our mind. One of those ideas is to
implement literature in English classes, but, what
type of literature can teachers use to reinforce the
acquisition of vocabulary. We have different types of
literature and they are all an incredible source of
vocabulary and also very good ways to involve the
students in the language.
GENERAL OBJECTIVE
To analyze the influence of Haiku poems in the
reinforcement of learning vocabulary for 7th graders
with the purpose of providing a suitable work guide
at Programa de Educación Abierta in Ciudad Colón,
2017.
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES
 To define English teaching methods for including
literature in English classes
 To describe the 7th graders background for
understanding the lack of motivation
 To determine the motivation that 7th graders have
regarding English classes with the purpose of
improve it
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES
 To describe the socio-economic environment present
in the community for a better understanding of 7th
graders daily life
 To analyze the methodologies that teachers can
apply in English classes for understanding 7th
graders life in classroom
 To develop a detailed guide for the application of
Haiku poems in the acquisition of vocabulary for 7th
graders
VARIABLES OF THE RESEARCH
 English teaching methods.
 7th graders background.
 7th graders motivation to study English.
 Economic and socio-cultural environment of the
community.
 Methodology in English classes.
INSTITUTIONAL FRAMEWORK
This research is being developed in the Programa de
Educación Abierta in Ciudad Colón.
It belongs to the 05 Circuit from Dirección Regional
de Puriscal.
INSTITUTIONAL FRAMEWORK
VISION
The Vision of this institution is to
form a profile of student as an
authentic person, capable to love
and live in harmony, reflexive;
responsible of himself, of the rest
of the people, and the
environment he lives in.

promote the integral development
of the students by mean of a focus
education in the person, based on
ethical values, esthetical, of
citizenship, moral and ecological,
that promotes their expression
and creativity capacity, projecting
the students in a good way for the
society.
THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK
Benjamin Wong (2012) states that:
“Many colleagues may face many difficulties
when teaching students nowadays. They may
have a general impression that teaching
students today is more difficult to some
extent when compared with the past. Indeed,
I found today’s students are different from
those in the 1980s”. (page 84)
THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK
Learning styles
Auditory: Use of images, maps or graphic.
Visual: Through listening or speaking techniques
Read and Write
Kinesthetic: Through tactile representation of
information
INTERPRETATION OF THE RESULTS
Observation
Teacher tried to applied the direct method; students
are invited to copy from the board and repeat the
commands. Most of the students have problems with
the pronunciation. The teacher does not have access
to technology devices, there is a flat screen T.V. but it
does not work.
INTERPRETATION OF THE RESULTS
Interview
Teacher mentioned that they presented those
feelings at the moment to start this class because of
different reasons, and in other classes or activities
was so hard the fact that they have express
themselves in a second language. They said that
feelings like anxiety, frustration, fear, low self-
confidence, shame and insecurity were common
when they tried to apply the new language
vocabulary.

CONCLUSIONS
 ENGLISH TEACHING METHODS
 Based on the answers from the students most of the
activities that teacher applies during classes are
focused on the direct method. Even though, it is
important to point out that teacher also applies
different techniques based on the vocabulary
acquisition due to in this particular program
students only apply one exam per year and only have
three lessons per week.
CONCLUSIONS
 SEVENTH GRADERS BACKGROUND
 Students believe that English is a very important
tool in order to improve their academic formation,
in order to get new jobs opportunities, and
improve their life quality
CONCLUSIONS
 SEVENTH GRADERS MOTIVATION TO STUDY
ENGLISH
 Their motivation is a personal growth over the
need to get a better job or a family inspiration. It is
important to mention that no matter what are their
reasons to take their studies back, they are focused
on what they want and they are prepared for
whatever comes in order to achieve their main goal
what is their high school diploma.
CONCLUSIONS
 ENVIRONMENT OF THE COMMUNITY
 Most of the students agreed that Ciudad Colón is a
very safe place; they state that this place is not
vulnerable to felony acts, actually they say that
most of them have never been a victim of any type
of crime in their community.
CONCLUSIONS
 METHODOLOGY IN ENGLISH CLASSES
 Students would like to change the methodology
used by the teacher, most of them expressed that
videos and songs would be good strategies to
develop their listening and speaking skills.
However, students were questioned about the
previous experience they have about literature in
English and their answers reflect a very deficient
background from the learners on this topic

RECOMMENDATIONS
 ENGLISH TEACHING METHODS.
 Given the case that the main reason why students do
not speak English in a proper way is because of the
fear to mispronounce the words, we can recommend
teachers to get more information about new teaching
methods like the one proposed in this study. All of
this in order to encourage students with new
techniques and also to improve the quality of their
lessons.
RECOMMENDATIONS
 SEVENTH GRADERS BACKGROUND
 To students to give the extra mile and forget all these
previous inconveniences because if they get frustrated
they will get blocked and the learning experience will
not be satisfactory.
 To the teacher we can recommend to take into account
all these aspects of the students´ background and
understand that this is not simple for them and that
they are doing a great effort to continue with their
school.
RECOMMENDATIONS
 SEVENTH GRADERS MOTIVATION TO STUDY
ENGLISH
 This is why we recommend to teachers to correct
students in a way that they feel comfortable, they
are grown people and they understand when they
make a mistake, but, it is important that they do
not feel embarrassed in front of the class.
RECOMMENDATIONS
 ENVIRONMENT OF THE COMMUNITY
 The socio-cultural environment in this community
is a high point and makes the population feel
proud of living in this town. Perhaps we can make
a recommendation to the local government to
continue in the way they are working right now.
Students feel comfortable and this is the most
important aspect to be remarkable.
RECOMMENDATIONS
 METHODOLOGY IN ENGLISH CLASSES
 Identify in advance the learning styles of students
in class contribute to help them to understand
better what they are studying and this leads
learners to be more confident and comfortable
with the contents and apply them in the real life in
a better way.

  • 2. INTRODUCTION For many years students from Educación Abierta have dealt with the necessity to face English, most of them are really afraid of learning a new language, the most significant problem they have is the lack of sources of vocabulary, this is why the main purpose of this research is to provide a very well designed guide for teachers to apply Haiku poems in their classes.

One of those ideas is to implement literature in English classes, but, what type of literature can teachers use to reinforce the acquisition of vocabulary. We have different types of literature and they are all an incredible source of vocabulary and also very good ways to involve the students in the language.

They may have a general impression that teaching students today is more difficult to some extent when compared with the past. Indeed, I found today’s students are different from those in the 1980s”. (page 84)

  • 24. CONCLUSIONS  SEVENTH GRADERS BACKGROUND  Students believe that English is a very important tool in order to improve their academic formation, in order to get new jobs opportunities, and improve their life quality
  • 25. CONCLUSIONS  SEVENTH GRADERS MOTIVATION TO STUDY ENGLISH  Their motivation is a personal growth over the need to get a better job or a family inspiration. It is important to mention that no matter what are their reasons to take their studies back, they are focused on what they want and they are prepared for whatever comes in order to achieve their main goal what is their high school diploma.
  • 26. CONCLUSIONS  ENVIRONMENT OF THE COMMUNITY  Most of the students agreed that Ciudad Colón is a very safe place; they state that this place is not vulnerable to felony acts, actually they say that most of them have never been a victim of any type of crime in their community.
  • 27. CONCLUSIONS  METHODOLOGY IN ENGLISH CLASSES  Students would like to change the methodology used by the teacher, most of them expressed that videos and songs would be good strategies to develop their listening and speaking skills. However, students were questioned about the previous experience they have about literature in English and their answers reflect a very deficient background from the learners on this topic

  • 29. RECOMMENDATIONS  ENGLISH TEACHING METHODS.  Given the case that the main reason why students do not speak English in a proper way is because of the fear to mispronounce the words, we can recommend teachers to get more information about new teaching methods like the one proposed in this study. All of this in order to encourage students with new techniques and also to improve the quality of their lessons.
  • 30. RECOMMENDATIONS  SEVENTH GRADERS BACKGROUND  To students to give the extra mile and forget all these previous inconveniences because if they get frustrated they will get blocked and the learning experience will not be satisfactory.  To the teacher we can recommend to take into account all these aspects of the students´ background and understand that this is not simple for them and that they are doing a great effort to continue with their school.
  • 31. RECOMMENDATIONS  SEVENTH GRADERS MOTIVATION TO STUDY ENGLISH  This is why we recommend to teachers to correct students in a way that they feel comfortable, they are grown people and they understand when they make a mistake, but, it is important that they do not feel embarrassed in front of the class.
  • 32. RECOMMENDATIONS  ENVIRONMENT OF THE COMMUNITY  The socio-cultural environment in this community is a high point and makes the population feel proud of living in this town. Perhaps we can make a recommendation to the local government to continue in the way they are working right now. Students feel comfortable and this is the most important aspect to be remarkable.
  • 33. RECOMMENDATIONS  METHODOLOGY IN ENGLISH CLASSES  Identify in advance the learning styles of students in class contribute to help them to understand better what they are studying and this leads learners to be more confident and comfortable with the contents and apply them in the real life in a better way.
