OBJECTIVES MS US History - Government and Economics Give examples to show how government provides for national defense; health, safety, and environmental protection; defense of property rights; and the maintenance of free and fair market activity.
ConceptsTo Know Property Rights:principles, policies, and rules by which disputes over property are to be resolved and by which property transactions may be structured. What distinguishes property law from other kinds of law is that property law deals with the relationships between and among members of a society with respect to "things." The things may be tangible, such as land or a factory or a diamond ring, or they may be intangible, such as stocks and bonds or a bank account. Fair & Free market: an economic system in which prices and wages are determined by unrestricted competition between businesses, without government regulation or fear of monopolies.
The Budget--The Big Picture!
The Big Picture!
68% of our budget is paid to the Military/National Security. Let’s take a closer look!
The Other 33%
Traditionally this is who is responsible for paying for all of this: In the wake of the Largest Bank bailout in history, the above figures will have to be represented differently for the next fiscal year… What does this mean?
YOUR TURN! Refer back to the slide, “Concepts you should know.” The United States of America currently operates under a Capitalistic, free enterprise economic system. Go to the link (Copy & Paste into your URL): http://www.propublica.org/special/government-bailouts and take a look at the history of government bailouts up to our current year. The money has to come from somewhere to give to these federal, state, and local institutions. Explore the site. In a 250 word essay write an opinion on whether you think the current Government bailouts will, or could effect property rights of citizens, and or our free market economy. Be sure to run your assignment through spell check and cite your source at the end of your document.

Editor's Notes

  1. Talk about how large the Government is and all that it actually encompasses…
  2. Point out the distribution percentage at the bottom of the slide. 68% & 33% this will guide them through the power point.
  3. Have them either print this out or draw it on a piece of paper jot down notes as you move through the slides…
  4. 68% of the budget is used for our Military and Defense
  5. A look at how the Navy is set up
  6. A look at how the Air orce is set up
  7. A look at how the Army is set up
  8. This is an interesting slide because of the fact that it is “classified,” so, 45 billion dollars worth of funds cannot be “talked,” about.
  9. Remember that the following slides are comprised of the remaining 33%. This is a perfect opportunity to use polling in an elluminate session so that students can see who gets what! For example the postal service…
  10. Is education getting it’s bang for the buck?
  11. Does elliminating NASA make a difference in the scheme of things?
  12. How would the new Health Care system change the way this chart looks?
