Reducing MTTR and False Escalations: Event Correlation at LinkedInMichael Kehoe
LinkedIn’s production stack is made up of over 900 applications and over 2200 internal API’s. With any given application having many interconnected pieces, it is difficult to escalate to the right person in a timely manner.
In order to combat this, LinkedIn built an Event Correlation Engine that monitors service health and maps dependencies between services to correctly escalate to the SRE’s who own the unhealthy service.
We’ll discuss the approach we used in building a correlation engine and how it has been used at LinkedIn to reduce incident impact and provide better quality of life to LinkedIn’s oncall engineers.

LinkedIn serves traffic for its 467 million members from four data centers and multiple PoPs spread geographically around the world. Serving live traffic from from many places at the same time has taken us from a disaster recovery model to a disaster avoidance model where we can take an unhealthy data center or PoP out of rotation and redistribute its traffic to a healthy one within minutes, with virtually no visible impact to users. The geographical distribution of our infrastructure also allows us to optimize the end-user's experience by geo routing users to the best possible PoP and datacenter.
This talk provide details on how LinkedIn shifts traffic between its PoPs and data centers to provide the best possible performance and availability for its members. We will also touch on the complexities of performance in APAC, how IPv6 is helping our members and how LinkedIn stress tests data centers verify its disaster recovery capabilities.

Installing one CI server or configuring a deployment pipeline for a specific application might be easy enough. However, as enterprises look to scale their DevOps adoption and optimize their software delivery practices across the organization (to support additional teams, product lines, application releases, processes and infrastructure) -- software delivery pipeline(s) need to scale to support enterprise workloads.
For some enterprises, this means having a pipeline that can withstand the velocity and throughput of thousands of product releases, supporting tens of thousands of developers and distributed teams, hundreds of thousands of infrastructure nodes, multitudes of inter-dependent application components, or millions of builds and test-cases.
This scale poses unique challenges and implications for your pipeline design. This talk covers best practices for analyzing and (re)designing your software delivery pipeline – regardless of your chosen tool-set or technologies. Obtain tips and tools for ensuring your pipelines and DevOps infrastructure have the right architecture and feature-set to support your software production as it scales, while also ensuring manageability, governance, security, and compliance.
Learn best practices for how to:
1) Plan for scale: how to project for the types of performance indicators/vectors you’d need to scale across.
2) How to design of your pipeline and supporting infrastructure and operations (such as data retention, artifact retrieval, monitoring, etc.).
3) Design your pipeline workflows and processes to allow reusability and standardization across the organization, while also enabling flexibility to support the needs of specific teams/apps.
4) Design your pipeline in a way that enables fast rollout- easy onboarding thousands of applications, across hundreds of teams
5) Incorporate security access controls, approval gates and compliance checks as part of your pipeline and have them standard across all releases
6) Ensure your architecture support HA, DR and business continuity.

Javascript is the language used the most for developing a web app or a hybrid mobile app, mainly because it can be executed directly by browsers. Java instead, can’t be run directly in a browser. On the other hand we have the language TypeScript, which is an open-source language that adds compile time type checking to Javascript, similar to Java, with the goal to prevent bugs mainly in the large code base. It is not uncommon for developers to write code using more than one programming language over time.
In this talk you will find out, how I survived adding Typescript/Javascript to the programming languages I work with, after a long experience of development with Java. Let’s go!

Semantic Validation: Enforcing Kafka Data Quality Through Schema-Driven Verif...HostedbyConfluent
"Incorrect data produced into Kafka can be a poison pill that has the potential to disrupt businesses built upon Kafka. The “Semantic Validation” feature is designed to address the challenges posed by incorrect or unexpected data in Kafka’s data processing pipelines, with the goal of mitigating such disruptions. By allowing users to define robust field constraints directly within schemas, such as Avro, we aim to enhance data quality and minimize the downstream impacts of inaccurate data in Kafka.
Furthermore, this feature can be expanded to include offline data processing, in addition to Kafka and Flink real-time processing. By combining real-time processing, batch analytics, and AI data pipelines, a global semantic validation system can be built.
In our upcoming talk, we will delve into the use cases of this feature, discuss its architecture, provide examples of defining rules, and explain how we enforce these rules. Ultimately, we will demonstrate how this feature can significantly enhance reliability and trustworthiness in Uber’s data processing pipelines."

We all have good and bad thoughts from time to time and situation to situation. We are bombarded daily with spiraling thoughts(both negative and positive) creating all-consuming feel , making us difficult to manage with associated suffering. Good thoughts are like our Mob Signal (Positive thought) amidst noise(negative thought) in the atmosphere. Negative thoughts like noise outweigh positive thoughts. These thoughts often create unwanted confusion, trouble, stress and frustration in our mind as well as chaos in our physical world. Negative thoughts are also known as “distorted thinking”.

He discussed the concept of quality improvement, emphasizing its applicability to various aspects of life, including personal, project, and program improvements. He defined quality as doing the right thing at the right time in the right way to achieve the best possible results and discussed the concept of the "gap" between what we know and what we do, and how this gap represents the areas we need to improve. He explained the scientific approach to quality improvement, which involves systematic performance analysis, testing and learning, and implementing change ideas. He also highlighted the importance of client focus and a team approach to quality improvement.

A Context-aware Service Evaluation Approach over Big Data for Cloud Applications
Abstract
Cloud computing has promoted the success of big data applications such as medical data
analyses. With the abundant resources provisioned by cloud platforms, the QoS (quality of
service) of services that process big data could be boosted significantly. However, due to
unstable network or fake advertisement, the QoS published by service providers is not always
trusted. Therefore, it becomes a necessity to evaluate the service quality in a trustable way, based
on the services’ historical QoS records. However, the evaluation efficiency would be low and
cannot meet users’ quick response requirement, if all the records of a service are recruited for
quality evaluation. Moreover, it may lead to ‘Lagging Effect’ or low evaluation accuracy, if all
the records are treated equally, as the invocation contexts of different records are not exactly the
same. In view of these challenges, a novel approach named Partial-HR (PartialHistorical
Records-based service evaluation approach) is put forward in this paper. In Partial-HR, each
historical QoS record is weighted based on its service invocation context. Afterwards, only
partial important records are employed for quality evaluation. Finally, a group of experiments are
deployed to validate the feasibility of our proposal, in terms of evaluation accuracy and
efficiency.
