9. Machines bale the steel in our domestic waste

10. Household appliances are much harder to recycle

11. Like cars, they take time and skill to break apart, which is costly.

12. Once the steel has been sorted and baled it is…

13. put into the furnace where molten iron is added

14. It gets heated to 1700 degrees C

15. The liquid metal is poured into a mould to form big slabs which are then rolled into coils

16. It’s then made into new cans…

17. bicycle parts…

18. railway tracks…

19. ships’ hulls…

20. cars…

21. bridges…

22. rollercoasters…

23. and many other things, both big and small.

24. What about the environmental impact?

25. Steel is made from one of earth’s most common resources – iron ore

26. as well as limestone

27. and coal.

28. Mining these has massive environmental impact,

29. the manufacture requires a huge amount of energy,

30. and creates a lot of waste.

31. The good news is that… STEEL IS INFINITELY RECYCLABLE So by recycling we can…

32. Conserve non-renewable fossil fuels

33. Reduce the consumption of energy

34. Reduce waste

35. Reduce greenhouse gas emissions

36. But we can do much better! In the UK up to 25% of a can is made up of recycled steel but steel manufactured in Europe contains 54% recycled steel.
