There are three levels of public schooling in the USA: elementary (K-5 or K-6), middle/junior high (6-8 or 7-8), and high school (9-12). Students graduate from each level, often with ceremonies, photographs, and gifts. Schools provide required textbooks while students supply other materials. Schools offer extracurricular activities and punishments like detention for infractions. Elementary students remain in one classroom, middle schools have periods/teachers for each subject, and high schools have more flexibility and special events like prom. Some are homeschooled or drop out, pursuing a GED later.
