Communication
Communication is a very important aspect in the school setting since students are taught effective communication so that they be able to communicate or express themselves well before people. In this case study, we analyze communication in various aspects depending on the way one present himself or herself. Mr. Smith who is the general educator in the school where Henry Jefferies is studying is appearing at the meeting which has been called to discuss the way forward on how Henry Jefferies can be assisted to become someone useful and important in life. Mr. Smith, the general educator comes to the meeting wearing jeans and a t-shirt and also put on sneakers. That kind of dressing just portrays the seriousness of Mr. Smith.
The dressing and the appearance of Mr. Smith show that he is not a serious man because of his casual dressing. That may portray him as a casual person in decision making. By sitting with both of his feet on the floor and having some ungraded papers with him demonstrate that Mr. Smith is a kind of a lazy person. The Para-verbal cues portray Smith as a person that cannot maintain eye contact with the person he is talking with. That then shows that he is not confident and unsure about what he is speaking about. Therefore, his submissions may not be taken seriously due to is appearance give different information from what he is to submit before the meeting.
The special educator Ms. Young appears before the meeting putting on casual pants and then loafers with the button blouse. That shows that Ms. Young is trying to be serious be she is not that serious as can be seen from her casual pants that she has put on. In most cases, the dressing attire portrays the character of the person. Therefore with the casual pants, one can easily mistake Ms. Young as one who is not concerned with what she does or say but just do things because she is the one available to do it.
Tying her hair away from her face demonstrate some sense of smartness in the brain. She is decently tying her hair backward because of the respect she has given to the brain she has, and that means that she is bright in her ideas. Making notes on the laptop only give some sense of pride because in the meeting you should not take notes on the laptop since it takes time in typing those notes, and then it demands much attention. That is to mean that a lot of attention will be given to the laptop instead of the meeting. Making eye contact continuously demonstrates that she is a confident lady who is sure with what she does and what she stands for.
Choosing to use understandable language that the parents can easily comprehend means that she is so concerned with Henry Jefferies, and she wants the parents to understand her sphere or reasoning so that the parents may also agree with her so that they may find an exclusive way of helping Henry Jefferies. Communication
Communication is a very important aspect in the school setting
since students are taught effective communication so that they
be able to communicate or express themselves well before
people. In this case study, we analyze communication in various
aspects depending on the way one present himself or herself.
Mr. Smith who is the general educator in the school where
Henry Jefferies is studying is appearing at the meeting which
has been called to discuss the way forward on how Henry
Jefferies can be assisted to become someone useful and
important in life. Mr. Smith, the general educator comes to the
meeting wearing jeans and a t-shirt and also put on sneakers.
That kind of dressing just portrays the seriousness of Mr. Smith.
The dressing and the appearance of Mr. Smith show that he is
not a serious man because of his casual dressing. That may
portray him as a casual person in decision making. By sitting
with both of his feet on the floor and having some ungraded
papers with him demonstrate that Mr. Smith is a kind of a lazy
person. The Para-verbal cues portray Smith as a person that
cannot maintain eye contact with the person he is talking with.
That then shows that he is not confident and unsure about what
he is speaking about. Therefore, his submissions may not be
2. taken seriously due to is appearance give different information
from what he is to submit before the meeting.
The special educator Ms. Young appears before the meeting
putting on casual pants and then loafers with the button blouse.
That shows that Ms. Young is trying to be serious be she is not
that serious as can be seen from her casual pants that she has
put on. In most cases, the dressing attire portrays the character
of the person. Therefore with the casual pants, one can easily
mistake Ms. Young as one who is not concerned with what she
does or say but just do things because she is the one available to
do it.
Tying her hair away from her face demonstrate some sense of
smartness in the brain. She is decently tying her hair backward
because of the respect she has given to the brain she has, and
that means that she is bright in her ideas. Making notes on the
laptop only give some sense of pride because in the meeting you
should not take notes on the laptop since it takes time in typing
those notes, and then it demands much attention. That is to
mean that a lot of attention will be given to the laptop instead
of the meeting. Making eye contact continuously demonstrates
that she is a confident lady who is sure with what she does and
what she stands for.
Choosing to use understandable language that the parents can
easily comprehend means that she is so concerned with Henry
Jefferies, and she wants the parents to understand her sphere or
reasoning so that the parents may also agree with her so that
they may find an exclusive way of helping Henry Jefferies. The
act of pausing for questions portrays excellent communication
skills by the special educator Ms. Young. It portrays her as
someone who is competent in what she decides about and can
defend her decision and give the reasons why she arrived at
such a decision. She is not self-centered, but her main
concerned is to see that Henry Jefferies is assisted so that in the
3. future he may become an important person that can be depended
on by other people.
The psychologist Dr. Burman physical appearance portrays him
as a man who knows what he does and is not guessing the
results or the outcome. He appears or comes to the meeting
while he is dressed in a suit pants and the shirt he puts on is
button-up with a tie. The way he is dressed, he is very smart,
and that shows that he is smart in whatever thing he says and
does. You can judge him from outward appearance and realize
that he is a man who understands himself. He is officially
dressed to show that he knew he was coming to a meeting which
was official since the meeting involved people from different
fields. (Jackie, et al. 2016)
Therefore, he could not dress carelessly or casually the way
many people have done. His dressing style portrays him as a
gentle man who is up to the task. The tie he puts on has a
picture that he explains to the members that have attended the
meeting that it was the gift that his father bought him while he
was five years. That alone shows that Dr. Burnman is not
forgetful since his memory can still trace what happened to him
while he was five years old. He further illustrates that the
picture on the tie was a gift given to him by his father.
That shows that the Psychologist is very appreciative that even
if years passes, he will continue to appreciate what has been
done to him by other people. With the legs crossed under the
desk means that the Psychologist is a serious person and takes
care of himself and does not want any embarrassment that can
come as a result of sitting carelessly. The hand's palm on the
table and then engaging direct eye contact with the person that
is talking clearly demonstrates his high level of concentration
and does not want any point to pass him without getting it. It
furthers illustrate the level of seriousness with what he stands
for and the experience he has in the field of psychology. It
means that the psychology is not doing trial and error rather he
4. is very sure and confident in what he stands for.
The assistant principal Dr. Jackson comes to the meeting
dressed in the business attire putting on khaki pants and the
polo shirt together with the dress shoes. The code of dressing
shows that the assistant principal may not be aware of what is
going or taking place in the school. The assistant principal in
the business attire shows that he is much interested in the
business and anything that can bring him money. He is expected
to be the most decent. Unfortunately, he dresses like the parents
of Henry Jefferies. It shows that in the meeting he is attending,
he cannot offer any solution or any way forward that can help
the team chart the way forward for the success of Henry
Jefferies.
Dressed in khaki shows that the meeting he is attending has no
value to him and therefore, there is no need of treating such a
meeting with high regards the meeting deserves. The assistant
principal sits with both of his feet on the floor and then he
intertwines his fingers shows that he is pointless and does not
even know how to sit in a serious meeting like the one he has
attended. He doesn't maintain eye contact with the person
talking shows that he has no interest in the meeting. He only
attends such meetings because he is an assistant principal but he
is not able to give any valuable direction that the members
attending the meeting may need or expect from him.
Mr. Jefferies who is a divorced parent and lawyer comes to the
meeting dressed in the business attire, yet he has come from the
office. That means that his mind is usually business oriented
and that when comes to the meeting like this, he thinks
business. Sitting with the correct posture with eye contact to
everyone talking shows that he is serious and wants the best for
his son Henry Jefferies. He wants the future of his son to be
bright, and that is the reason he is attentive to hear the
submission of the other people who have attended the meeting.
5. By speaking quick and few words in reply shows that he is a
man of few words and succinct always to the point, and it might
also refer that he is a good time manager who does not like
wasting time on other things that are not important. (Marilyn, et
al. 2013)
The mother to Henry Jefferies who is also a divorced parent and
a teacher at the Kindergarten comes to the meeting dressed
casually in the skirt that is knee-length, and this shows that she
is not an honorable lady because of her dressing code. Dressing
in a knee-length skirt shows the lack of self-respect as part of
the body is left exposed outside. She is also casual to mean that
she is not careful with what she does and the decision she
makes.
By interrupting Mr. Jefferies while talking shows that she is
very arrogant, rude and difficult woman who is difficult to
tame. She looks at her hand many of the time while talking
showing some disrespect to the members of the committee that
have attended the meeting to help her son. Involving the stories
about Henry Jefferies while young is a way of showing people
that she was very committed, and perhaps the problem her son is
passing through is as a result of what he went through while he
was young.
Henry Jefferies who is the student under question sat with both
of his legs under the table and crossed he is so disturbed
because he knows that the meeting is about him, and that is the
reason why he puts his hand in his laps. That shows that he has
been in a difficult situation that even he is not happy and wants
to come out of the situation and be like other students who
behave properly.
Interest
Everyone attending this meeting has their interest. Mr. Smith
6. who is the general indicator has an interest that Henry is moved
to special education so that he may be able to be attended to by
the special educators. Ms. Young’s interest is to maintain Henry
in the current school so that he may not take many years in
school if transferred to another school where he will have to
repeat some classes. Dr. Burnman the Psychologist has an
interest in seeing the behavior and the character of Henry
changes and that is the reason he proposes that they should
consider taking Henry for the behavior therapy. The assistant
principal has no defined interest in this case because he seems
to be much concerned with his business more than nothing else.
The parents have the same interest in seeing their son studies
peacefully without being teased by others.
Emotions/ Perspectives
The emotions of these people in the meeting are very important
as it helps to understand what every one of them stands for. Mr.
Smith, the general educator, has a perspective that if Henry is
taken to a Special school, he will be able to perform well as the
teachers who will be attending to him will be able to understand
his character and behavior. Ms. Young as special educator
believes that Henry can just improve in the school where he is
current as long as he is given the necessary support that he
needs. She says that Henry will be able to catch up, and
therefore there is no need to transfer him from the current
school where he is. Dr. Burnman as a psychologist believes that
it is on the behavior therapy that is very important, and Henry
will just have the normal character, and Dr. Burnman talks on
psychological perspective. The parents are also with the
parental perspective; they do not want their son to be teased,
and therefore, they are proposing that he may just continue
school in his current school. (John, et al. 2014)
Common Interest
7. There is a common interest that all these people beginning from
Mr. Smith the general educator, Ms. Young the special
educator, Dr. Burnman the psychologist, and the parent. They
all want Henry to proceed with his studies and be successful in
future. They do not want Henry to stagger with education rather
they are ready to give him the necessary guidance and
assistance that he needs to become a useful person that other
people will depend on in the future. Therefore, the common
interest is to see the young boy continues with his education
without any problem.
Brainstorming Options
Henry can have several options where he will obtain equitable
success to education, and these options include: group
discussions, homework assignments, pull reading, speech
competition, counseling, sports and games, remedial classes,
family interaction like come together, taken to academic trips
and tours. These brainstorming options will help Henry Jefferies
to catch up, and he will always be busy since he will have a lot
attend to hence there will be no time to waste. That will help
him to catch him and through many or lots of work, Henry will
be able to have the normal character and behavior just like other
students. All these brainstormings will need a corporation
between the teacher and the parents to help him.
Reaching agreement
The option that can be used is counseling. The boy needs to be
counseled and be helped to understand himself. Counseling will
be the only way that all the people beginning from the general
educator Mr. Smith to the parents will there submissions
concerning the state of Henry is solved. Counseling will be able
to assess the memory and the understanding power of Henry and
then help him how to improve. After the counseling, he will be
able to behave normally just like other children. Therefore,
8. counseling will also bring the agreement among the general
educator, special educators, the psychologist, the principal and
the parents.
School-wide vision
Everyone wants what the best is, and the best thing to achieve
can only be attained in a collaborative manner or way. That is to
show that there must be a collaborative culture between the
educators, the psychologist, and the communities or the parents.
School can only be able to achieve a wide vision if it
incorporates the psychologist and the communities together with
the educators in their programs. That will help to establish a
collaborative culture whereby there will be cooperation between
the community and the school, and everyone will be working
hard for the school to achieve its best for the students. (John,
2008)
Role Reflection
As a special educator in this case study of Henry, I would use
negotiation as a method of conflict resolution whereby I would
meet all of the educators and the parents to help them solve the
emerging educational conflict and find the way forward on how
the students can have a good learning environment. For the case
of Henry, I will be able to convince the teams present, and we
tackle it on another perspective that will help Henry to succeed
in his goal. The case for Henry will help me as an educator to
be a strong leader since it involves various people with various
submissions that are all important. (George, et al. 2007)
