Analyzing Claude Chabrol s Essay Little Themes
Name: Dorcas Bamigboye.
Student Number: 7781917.
Course: FILM 2380.
Instructors Name: Jonah Corne.
Reading Response 4. In the essay Little Themes by Claude Chabrol, Claude Chabrol argues that the
script of a movie does not matter, but the theme of the movie is the most important. He says there is
no such thing as a big theme and a little theme , because the smaller the theme is, the more one can
give it a big treatment. In this essay we are made to understand that a film s moral position should be
in its form and style, not in an underlying social message in its narrative and that the content of a
movie is subject to style. Style is something that is personal to each filmmaker. Style is what
differentiate movies from one another. Several

`` Fullmetal Alchemist `` By Hiromu Arakawa
Fullmetal Alchemist by Hiromu Arakawa is a book that perfectly reflects on human behaviour, and
though does contain fictional content, makes many references to real world struggles and issues. It
deals with small, more intimate issues like doubt of your loved ones, but also reflects on international
issues like racism. It is a story that teaches us to not be too quick to react. It teaches us that we should
not yearn for the past, and aim for a future where we will not have anything to yearn for, and it is one
of the reasons I continue to love fiction to this day. Envy laid on the ground in his parasitic form after
being burnt to flames by Colonel Mustang repeatedly. The Colonel at this time would have continued

Scar!!........ why.... Why!? Why!? Why!? Damn you all!! After Envy s furious rant, Edward continues
to say Envy, you.....you re envious of humans. We are so much weaker than you homunculi but...
battered, confused, even when we re beaten, and about to collapse... even when we know it s pointless,
we always stand back up. And if we can t our friends will lift us. You will never have that, and it s
made you jealous of us. Envy, humiliated by the fact that the person he didn t understand at all
understood how he felt, proceeds to kill himself. The story then continues to the battle in the central
army HQ where Edward s teacher joins the fight.
Envy was born with his prime emotion being envy, meaning he wouldn t ever be able to feel empathy,
and this was completely out of his control. The main villain In Fullmetal Alchemist created artificial
humans in which he implanted his emotions. Throughout the main characters Edward and Alphonse s
journey, they encounter these people one by one eventually having to face them as enemies. The acts
they do, their interactions with characters and their death all perfectly describe their respective
emotions. In Envy s case, he was jealous of Edward. Envy was always interested in Edward and
messed around with him. Unconsciously, he stayed around Edward in order to attempt to understand
him. In Envy s last words, he wished Edward good luck, telling him he looks forward to how far he

Significance Of The Ghost In Hamlet
Hamlet by William Shakespeare introduces the concept of what to believe and what not to believe.
The ghost scenes in Hamlet are no doubt a dramatic aspect of the play. Whatever may have been
Shakespeare s views about ghosts, he incorporates the idea in a way that shows their significance. The
ghost scenes destroy Hamlet s innocence by exposing him to the horrible crimes within his family and
the ghost s appearance confirms Hamlet s suspicion that the marriage between his uncle and his
mother had something sinister about it.
The first appearance of the ghost, the characters debate on its reality and try to figure out why it
roams. The readers are then introduced to two characters that are soldiers at the Danish castle Elsinore,
Bernado and Francisco. The men hear a noise and become nervous, calling out Who s there? (I,i,1)
Marcellus, another guard, and Horatio, a nobleman, arrive and say they don t come in harm. Then all
of a sudden a Ghost appears. The men believe it looks like the recently deceased Hamlet, King of
Denmark. Horatio tries to speak to it and asks why he has come in a form of the old King, but the
ghost doesn t answer and disappears.
The characters in Act 1, Scene One speculate that the ghost may have come to warn ... Show more

While waiting for the ghost, Hamlet and Horatio look through the windows of the palace and watches
Claudius drinking and enjoying himself. Hamlet disapproves of this behavior. The ghost suddenly
appears and even with his uncertainty as to whether the Ghost airs from heaven or blasts from hell,
(I,iv, 41) or whether the Ghost harbors wicked or charitable (I,iv,42) intentions, Hamlet instantly
identifies the spirit as his father. Even though Marcellus and Horatio tried stopping Hamlet from going
after the ghost, Hamlet follows the ghost so the Ghost could explain the purposes of his

Jewish American Literatue
Jewish American Literature Duty Matters Throughout the course of the semester, the concept of duty
has been a major theme in various novels, such as in Anzia Yezierska s Bread Givers, Cynthia Ozick s
The Shawl, and Saul Bellow s Herzog. Although Yezierska, Ozick, and Bellow offer different
circumstances, they all suggest a sense of responsibility from parent to child. I will show how the
relationship between Sara and her father in Bread Givers differ from Rosa and the living incarnation
of her daughter in The Shawl and Herzog s fight to gain custody of his daughter June in Herzog. They
are all significant in understanding the parent child commitment in Jewish American families.
According to these three novels, parents are obligated to their children parents must give emotional
support as well as security to them. According to Norman Soloman s Judaism: A Very Short
Introduction, the idea of duty is an act when one is obligated to carry out as well as a feeling of
responsibility. In Judaism, a man s duties are defined by God s commandments. One must decree to
the Torah, the first five books of the Bible as a guide to holiness. The complete theological idea of a
man s role in life is comprised within the notion of mitzvah, which means duty . The term ḥovah,
denotating obligation or duty is also used the same as mitzvah. To complete a divine commandment is
to satisfy one s duty. In these three novels, duty is the chief reason for the actions of these characters.

Symbolism In The Book Of Sand
Apeirophobia the fear of the eternal, is not such an irrational fear it would seem. What could be more
unnatural than something which cannot be destroyed? Even if it poses no threat, the impossible chance
of escape is itself nightmarish. This fear of the unnatural, sinister aura that infinity instills is
demonstrated in Jorge Luis Borges book, The Book of Sand. In it, Borges uses the book of sand to
symbolize the bible and other books in general. This symbolism alludes to the nature of books that
they themselves, especially the bible, are infinite, and as a result can be sinister. Borges will use
similarities between the book of sand and the bible in order to establish an overall theme, stating that
books are infinite, and that is itself a dreadful prospect. Now, for a more fluid reading experience, the
book of sand will be referred to as the holy writ. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In either case, the initial reaction is to burn either book. Borge s decides against burning the Holy
Writ, in fear that it may never actually burn out, suffocating the world. Like trying to burn the Holy
Writ, many have tried to destroy the bible. Yet to this very day bibles exist steadfast. Furthermore,
most book burnings occur out of opposition to the book s message. For example, Borges found the
book distanced himself from friends and family, which could be alluding to the schism societies
endure following the introduction of foreign culture. A great example of this is within the fictional
book things fall apart, where its main protagonist Okonkwo observes his culture torn apart by the
introduction of catholicism; he feared the religion would destroy his people. So, while both books
likely have good intentions, they may cause an equal amount of harm if not handled properly. In any
case, their infinite existence is a foreboding one for many, as they may never be able to escape it if
they chose, they are suffocated by

Women Wearing Bespoke Clothing For Women
Bespoke Threads was formed by Alsion with a vision of creating her own company and stop working
for other people. Along with a colleague from her old company she formed a partnership and they
worked really well together. There was a lot of discussion on retail ideas, but they came to the
conclusion of custom made ( bespoke ) clothing for women. This was an opportunity as bespoke was
not yet available in Australia.
Their idea of women wearing bespoke clothing in Australia turned out to be successful making them a
reasonable return. They also hired professional clothing design professionals, which helped them
improve their product significantly. However the social risk was a big aspect as they had long working
hours. Alison is now selling her product from home, which was more beneficial. She also intends to
start franchising and licensing to expand, as her reputation of her company is excellent from her years
of experience in Bespoke Clothing.
This report will identify and justify any potential strength and weakness relevant to Bespoke Threads.
In addition these strengths and weaknesses will be followed by an analysis of the business
environment exploring the economic and technological factors that influence Bespoke Threads.
Finally, relevant recommendations will be made to assist Bespoke Threads on improving their overall
organisation.

Social Tension Surrounding The United States Essay
Introduction
In what has become known as the issue of the century by many (Buchanan, 2015), immigration has
been a topic of debate and an area of sociological tension for several decades in the United States. It
can be seen daily in our newspapers, television shows and especially in America politics. In fact, it
could be argued that this form of social tension in the United States goes as far back as 1492 when
Christopher Columbus first stepped foot on what is now North America. It was from this point that
social tension surrounding immigration into the modern United States truly began between early
European explorers and the existing Native Americans.
Social tension surrounding immigration began to peak when large scale immigration into the United
States started in the late 1800 s. In the early days of immigration into the United States the social
tension surrounded the diaspora of the Native Americans which lead to the creation of indian
reservations (cite US History.org). This early social tension primarily surrounded the obtainment of
land and the establishment of property. As we move forward into history, modern immigration tension
in America is more focused on immigration from Mexico.
This paper will explore immigration into the United States and help determine why it is a source of
social tension. Some groups suggest that immigration threatens America s resources and should be
better controlled while others suggest that immigration is vital to the success of

Mise En Scene Alice In Wonderland
The fantasy film adaption of Lewis Carroll s original novel Alice s Adventures in Wonderland was
directed by Tim Burton and produced in 2010. The visually engaging version of Alice s quirky
adventures is comprised of many vivid mise en scene effects in the dynamic scene where Alice slays
the Jabberwocky. These vast arrays of elements include colour, lighting, set design, props, makeup,
creative costumes and sound effects. Lighting and colour are powerful visual features that enhance the
mood of the scene and provide an understanding of the scene. In this case, the lighting and colour

Queen s army of knights are wearing the same silver metallic amour too. Alice s girly flare has been

The Historical Values Of Ubuntu
The argument here that exists is that Ubuntu has no historic significance or cultural value. Its source
and origin cannot be identified as it is still believed to be a discourse that was just invented for the
sake of it. This is why many critics have gone to great lengths to comment that this terminology is
empty and does not have any concrete relevance or even origination and should be discarded instead
of being commercialized or made popular. The societies that practiced Ubuntu cannot be found either
which further weaken the position of this term and its emergence as a value.
However, I believe that Ubuntu should not be discarded only because it has no historic value or origin
because even without these fundamental aspects the term and concept has emerged as a universal
African humanist value. When Africans could not oppose the colonialism, they clung to Ubuntu as a
critique and this ideology has been with them in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This can be seen by the fact that humanism believes staunchly in predestination and that the fate of a
person is sealed which cannot be changed in the course of a lifetime. Whereas, the Muslim phase of
humanism provides a more logical approach which suggests that the concept of predestination does
exist but it can be changed through efforts. This approach is not only more logical but also more
rational in terms of its existence. It has been said by the Muslim phase of humanism that men are
distinct creatures, separate from the rest of Creation, due to the fact that God gave them an effective
power (Qudra), once and for all time, by which they can choose to act freely . This shows that the
concept of humanism is flawed and man has power over their actions because of which their fate
could possibly not be predetermined. Their destination lies in the path that they choose after rational

How The Media Is The Issue Of The 21st Century
1. The relationship of money to Free Speech is the issue of the 21st century. (Bill Moyers in Freedom
of Speech for Sale).
a) In the light of this quotation, explain both the advantages and dangers of media ownership
concentrated in only a few mega corporations. Refer to specific readings/viewings to back up your
thoughts.
b) According to Robert McChesney ( Corporate Media the Threat to Democracy ), and the movie Free
Speech for Sale, why is such a concentration of corporate ownership a threat to democracy ? (Hint:
begin by defining democracy. )
c) Include in your discussion both what the function of the media should be in a democracy, and what
the function of the media is in danger of becoming under the current system. Use specific examples
from the readings and the viewings.
The issue in the 21st century is the fact that corporations are the hand that guides the media and the
government. When Viacom, Disney, and other large companies are also paying for the lobbying for
the politicians, it is no longer a democracy for the people, by the people, but a corporatocracy. This is
a term used to refer to an economic and political system under control by corporations and/or
corporate interests. Only the people with deep pockets use their access to the media to overwhelm the
general public. Such as The Telecom Act of 1996 tried to break up television monopolies but Title 3
Cable Services , which allowed for media cross ownership just basically canceled out the main idea

Hypothyroidism can affect the body temperature because it slows down the metabolism. This causes
the energy produced to be less. With that being said, the bodies functions slow down so the body
temperature drops.
b. heart rate
Hypothyroidism decreases the heart rate. This is because the body functions slow down. When the
body functions slow down, the heart doesn t need to work as hard and as fast to maintain homeostasis.

The 1920s was a drastic shift for young people s choices and future consequences. The years of the
1920s represented a new type of freedom for women, young adults, African Americans, and
immigrants. A group of people support dogmatic, old slow rural life, religious belief, and did not care
for education, while the others embraced modernism and preferred urban living, contributing to
technology, continuing education, urban development, science, and a brighter future. The anti
modernist people carried out every effort in their power to depict change as a bad idea for the future.

Bourdieu s Understanding the Power for Social Change
Bourdieu describes habitus as a power of adaptation. It constantly performs an adaptation to the
outside world which only exceptionally takes the form of radical conversion (Bourdieu, 1993).
Bourdieu s concept of habitus enables us to understand women as a complex amalgam of their past
and present (Bourdieu, 1990a), but an amalgam that is always in the process of completion. There is
no finality or finished identity. At the same time, habitus also includes a set of complex, diverse
predispositions. It invokes understandings of identity premised on familial legacy and early childhood
socialisation. As such, it is primarily a dynamic concept, a rich interlacing of past and present,
interiorised and permeating both body and psyche. Much of the dynamism of habitus is the product of
the interconnection of habitus with Bourdieu s related concept of field. Field is a set of objective,
historical relations between positions anchored in certain forms of power (or capital) (Wacquant in
Bourdieu Wacquant, 1992, p. 16). A dialectic relationship exists be tween the two concepts. In one
direction there is a flow of influence from field to habitus that produces a relationship of conditioning
in which the field structures the habitus. When Bourdieu refers to , is usually referring to the different
types of capitals that one person can acquire. These capitals are economic, linguistic, and cultural
(Bourdieu, 1991). Depending of the quantity of each of these capitals, a person is

The Mbuti hunt and gather food from the forest, and they trade as well for survival. They are referred

value their lifestyle. The Mbuti show how their kinships, beliefs and values, and economic

They work hard to feed their families. They value the idea of a family and working together. That is
why their leisure time is so important. Leisure time is used to spend time with the kin and friends, the
foraging societies believe (Nowak and Laird, 2010). They work hard to find food and hunt for a
couple of days and rest of the time is for leisure activities. The Mbuti have ritual that they do during
their leisure time. They have a ceremony called molimo. It is performed by the men and is associated
with singing and the use of a trumpet called the molimo (Nowak and Laird, 2010). The molimo
ceremony used the molimo, a strictly forest institution, which young men are initiated after they have
become successful hunters (Lee, pg. 244). This is how most of the leisure time goes to, the family. The
forager culture has high value for working together and sharing (Nowak and Laird, 2010). Those
values show how their economic organization works wells. They see economic importance as cultural
tradition. This is how they survive also. It is easy for forager to move place to place because they don t
have many material items. That is what makes the exchange process so easy also. The reciprocal
economic systems are a form of exchange of goods and services that occurs between members of a
kinship group (Nowak and Laird, 2010). Foraging societies has a similar way of using this system.

The Bob Ross Painting Method
Bob Ross and his happy little friends have introduced millions of PBS viewers to the world of art. Bob
may be gone but his gentle legacy of painting technique continues to charm and instruct. Not only are
there books and DVDs available, but a full line of Bob Ross painting supplies are sold on line and in

How Does He Do That?
The Bob Ross painting method is the wet in wet technique. Artists have used this method for hundreds

This results in the edges remaining crisp while the bulk of the mountain takes on a misty, grayed
appearance, due to the blending of the background paint into the dark of the mountain paint.
Evergreen Trees
Just as with clouds, Bob uses the fan brush to paint evergreen trees. The paint is heavily loaded onto a
fan brush. Using the edge lay a very fine vertical line to represent the treetop. Use the corner to dab
tiny bits of paint to represent the uppermost branches of the tree on the sides of the vertical line. As the
artist progresses down the trunk, he applies more pressure and uses more of the edge of the brush. Use
a choppy, erratic motion to emulate the uneven, jagged shapes of the evergreen. The underlying layer
of paint will blend with the tree color as the brush runs out of paint. Add more as necessary, but do not
try to keep all the branches the same color. This is representational, and not meant to be graphically
correct. It is the essence of the tree and there is no need to go for authenticity.
Wildlife
In the Ross method of painting wildlife, preparation is different from painting landscapes. The canvas
is thinly coated with grey gesso and allowed to dry thoroughly. Draw or transfer the subject to the
canvas using graphite carbon paper.

Forensic Analysis
Purpose: The main goal of this article is to raise awareness about how forensic archeology and
anthropology can be used to improve the outcome of cases in the advocacy for human rights. It is
mainly intended to prove how the material remains can be used to address violations of human rights
in the past, by allowing the families of the victims to honor their memories. A way to do that is to
provide the deceased with appropriate burials, as well as to provide their families with enough
knowledge to seek justice. This article proves the efficiency of archeological techniques to illustrate

Some of these are the study of stratification through the analysis of color variations, and components
of the ground. Moreover, historical and archival researches were detrimental to the process of data
recollection. Other techniques included the recording of human remains before and after the
excavations by taking photographs in situ (Congram, Flavel and Maeyama 2014). Features and other
non organic remains were equally analyzed and recorded for further analysis. Other useful techniques
included geographical information based on the location and position of the graves, as well as drawing
scales of the corpses positions in them (Congram, Flavel and Maeyama 2014). Furthermore,
anthropological analysis was paramount. Through anthropological studies conducted in the lab, as
well as at the field, forensic anthropologists and archeologists were able to recreate a complete
compilation of oral histories based on municipal records and official documents. Also, testimonies of
the victims family members, and interviews with former prisoners gave a profound insight that
advanced the investigation. Other methods worth mentioning were DNA analysis, but due to its
limitations and time constraints, DNA analysis was not conducted on every exhumed body. This
research method was carried out at the expense of family members with economic means who set up
to identify their dead relatives; it was not sufficiently plausible during the investigation as a result of
time constraints. Significant qualitative and quantitative data were collected during this investigation,
and these became extremely relevant to determine causes of death of the corpses found in mass burial
grounds. All the data collected and the methods used during the research, provided a solid
understanding of the circumstances of the deaths of the victims, along with concise evidence that

Mahatma Gandhi, one of the greatest leaders to leave this world, left with a few words on the
environment: The earth, the air, the land and the water are not an inheritance from our fore fathers but
on loan from our children. So we have to handover to them at least as it was handed over to us. If we
as humans cannot live up to this standard of the loan we ve been given in this lifetime, who can? India

However, the countryside has a profound monsoon season that can be witnessed throughout June and

Last quarter I took a class called Psychology of Gender that I really enjoyed. The topics that we
discussed were all very interesting and had me wanting to go to every class for engaging discussions.
We were put into groups at the very beginning of the quarter. We had the same group throughout the
entire quarter, with these groups we lead class discussions and presented our final presentations. The
final assignment for this class was for each group to choose a film and watch it. While watching the
film we were to look and see if we could identify any particular discourses about gender that the film,
intentionally or unintentionally, displayed. We were tasked with looking back at some of the ideas we
had discussed in class, some of which ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As a psychological minded individual I have been given a great vocabulary both from the Psychology
of Gender class and many others to describe gender issues and power issues reflected in the world. I
had not however, written an assignment on gender and power issues in the world and in the media
before. Approaching this assignment with a sense of openness and excitement really reflects how
much of a difference it makes when you feel connected to the material you are learning in a class.
Since this assignment, not much has changed about me as a student. I find that if I am engaged with
the material of classes and with my classmates I will have a lot to discuss in class. My Psychology of
Gender class further proved to me that professors who are very open to different ideas and veering off
the planned topic promote the greatest learning and reflecting. I was able to reflect about societal
issues and norms more in the class than any other class before it because of the great atmosphere that

Gender Roles Of Civic Duties And Raising Children
Throughout Vibia Perpetua s life, Roman society expected her to follow structured gender roles of
civic duties and raising children in her community because she was female. Perpetua defied the
expectations placed upon her since birth by converting to Christianity and used the freedom of the
Christian religion to show her independence and create her own role as a woman. This essay will
analyze Perpetua s defiance of the gender expectations of civic hood and motherhood of the Roman
community, and how the Christian community allowed her to define her own identity as a woman on
her own terms in conflicting societies.
In Perpetua s time, the role of a woman within the Roman culture was determined narrowly against
gendered expectations. Early Roman society families had a patriarchal structure meaning the father
was the head of the family. The strongest tie within the family was that between a father and a
daughter. Daughters were expected to [forge] political and social ties for fathers (Salisbury 6). A
Roman daughter was favored the most; they received the best education overseen by their fathers. The
purpose of a strong education was to pass on to their sons the values of Rome as well as help her to be
a good mother in the future (Salisbury 7). One expectation of a woman in the Roman culture was
reproduction in order to continue lineage. In addition to structured family and social rules, Roman
women joined cults with specific rituals for females to perform. A woman s role

1930 s Isolationism In Canada
Isolationism was a very important topic during the times before Canada. Isolationism is the policy
where a country avoid alliances and affairs with foreign countries ( Isolationism ), in this case it was
Canada distancing themselves because of how insignificant they were in the League of Nations, its
gaining of autonomy made it physically detached and the Great Depression intensified it (
Isolationism ). The listed factors caused isolationism which delayed Canada s participation in the war.
The reason to why it was such a significant topic to Canadians in the late 1930 s is the outcome of
their decision, they can chose to help and try to defeat the Axis Powers to secure peace or continue to
wait until the they attack Canada, and by that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The background are grey and other dark colours representing the mood of the that time since it was
fairly grim and not a happy time during the depression and right before an impending war. The
painting tells the perspective of an isolationist who do not see the consequences of ignoring the
overseas war. The character in the painting can be seen as a wife and husband, and a soldier against an
enemy soldier, to put deeper meaning it would be the wife representing isolationists, the husband
representing Canada (Canadian politicians) and the two soldiers with one being the Canadian army
and the other the enemy. The story in the painting is that the wife/isolationist tries to keep her
husband/Canada to stay on the other side, the safer side, whereas the monsters fear, duty, and guilt
continues to pester and haunt the husband pulling him to choose to go to battle. He fears the advances
of the axis powers, is guilty of the sacrifices that have been made so far just so they don t have to fight
and feel responsible as a Canadian, as a nation to protect the peace of the world. The setting is half in
Canada right before the decision of war was made and the other half on enemy territory for war as that
would be the result of entering war many deaths, sacrifices , and lots of bloodshed hence the red
droplet shaped items on the right side. And this is the story behind my painting on

Internet Security Metrics
Security Metrics
As the Internet becomes ubiquitous due to wireless technologies including 3G and pervasive Wi Fi
Hotspots, there is the need to continually improve security technologies. One of the most effective
approaches to doing this is to define a series of metrics for measuring security levels attained (Idika,
Bhargava, 2012). The following is a listing of security metrics and their definitions:
In the area of Incident Management the following metrics apply:
Mean Cost per Incident This the average cost per security incident from a dollars and time
perspective. The cost per incident is often measured in terms of opportunity cost of how the time
could have been invested in other tasks instead of solving the security incident (Shari, 2009).
Mean Time Between Security Incidents This is the aggregated measurement of how much time
elapses between security incidents over a given time period. The mean time between security incidents
is often measured in monthly increments and charted to compare the impact of security strategies over
time (Wang, Guo, Wang, Zhou, 2012).
Number of Incidents a very fundamental measure of security that all security platforms, even those
available for free via vendors websites, report. This is the baseline of many security programs and
measurement platforms today. This figure is often tracked over years to determine how well
investment sin security pay off over time as well.

Reaching the Cape of Good Hope in 1487, they were led by the navigator, Vasco da Gama, across the
Indian Ocean to discover the sea route to the Far East in 1497. They knew of the existence of lands
across the Atlantic and they had made several expeditions to the West before Columbus discovered the
Antilles in 1492, but they had kept the knowledge to themselves in order to forestall the ambitions of
Spain, England, and France. For a small nation, secrecy was the only available method of
safeguarding the rewards of bold and successful exploration against exploitation by more powerful
maritime rivals.
The Treaty of Tordesillas (1494) settled the question of possession of the new lands between Spain
and Portugal. It was agreed that territories lying east of a meridian 370 leagues west of the Cape Verde
Islands should belong to Portugal, the lands to the west to Spain. This imaginary line, from pole to
pole, cut through the eastern most part of the South American continent and constituted Brazil s first
frontier, although the formal discovery by Pedro Alvares Cabral did not take place until six years later
in 1500.
First Settlements (1530 1549)
Cabral s voyage was soon followed by other Portuguese expeditions. The most exploitable wealth they
found was a wood that produced red and purples dyes, pau brasil (from which the country derived its
name). Organized occupation only began in 1530,

Modernity And The Historical Period
According to Marshall Berman, Modernity is a term of art used in the Humanities and Social Sciences
to designate both a historical period as well as the ensemble of a particular socio cultural norms
attitudes and practices that arose in post medieval Europe and have developed since in various ways
and at various times around the world. (Berman 2010, 15 36) The term Modernity was coined by
Charles Baudelaire. It also refers to post medieval, post traditional historical period which is marked
by a move from feudalism towards modernization (capitalism, industrialisation, rationalisation). But
conceptually, it also relates to the modern era and to modernism, but forms a distinct concept. In

Methods Of Using Data Relationships And Computer Models
Analytics is the process of using data relationships and computer models to drive business value,
improve decision making and understand human relationships. If the Information Age began in the
1990s with the rise of digital technology, then we ve now officially entered the Age of Big Data,
wherein companies like Google, Facebook, IBM, Teradata, Oracle, and SAS have the capacity to
gather a lifetime s worth of data about customers and their behavior. But that data is just an
incomprehensible pile of numbers until a skilled analyst turns those numbers into meaningful
information, useful for making intelligent business decisions. Today, companies are searching for
experts in data analytics who have high formed business and technology backgrounds, and who
understand the importance of the latest data and Information Age trends. This requires more than
simple data analysis. Prescriptive analytics focuses on trends using simulation and optimization, while
predictive analytics uses statistical tools to predict the future, and descriptive analytics is concerned
with enabling smart decisions based on data. Data miners and data analytics experts who are versatile
in all three areas of analytics can help corporate executives translate their data into intelligent
information, which provides companies a competitive advantage and increases their bottom lines.
Analytics have made their presence felt in every industry, but they have a major role to play in the
sports industry and many teams

Southern Loyalist Defeat In The American Revolutionary War
Introduction The purpose of this paper is to identify three factors that contributed to the failure in the
British Southern Campaign in the American Revolutionary war. This paper will examine British and
American Southern Loyalist defeat in the Battle of Kings Mountain, and discuss assumptions the
British made including loyalists support, logistics, and terrain advantage. It is important to study past
military actions to identify mistakes and apply lessons learned to current U.S. military operations.
Background
The Battle of King s Mountain between the American Loyalist and American Patriots took place on

College, 1928) However, Ferguson received further messages the Patriot militia were close to his

Ferguson decided to make his defensive stand at Kings Mountain with its steep wooded slopes
provided a favorable natural defense. The summit was moderately flat and clear, and had an
abundance of trees that provided timbers to build wooden barricades. (U.S. Army War College, 1928)
Yet, Ferguson despised cutting down trees to use as barricades. (Wicker, 1998) As an alternative, he
placed the wagons and his men s baggage equipment as barricades alongside the mountain s northeast
crest. (Wicker, 1998) Ferguson thought he had the vantage point employing a 360° degree perimeter
defense overlooking down from the crest of the mountain. Campbell received information from the
local population that Ferguson had established his camp at Kings Mountain. Campbell moved quickly,
assembled 900 of his best sharpshooters, mounted their horses, and started on their long night ride in

Sleep-Wake Homeostasis
The research article explains how there may be something that controls when you go to sleep and how
long you are sleeping for. Your body has an internal clock that helps regulate when you sleep and
wake up. This clock is called sleep wake homeostasis. Homeostasis is comprised of three parts. There
is a receiver that relays incoming senses, a central system that interprets the senses, and an effector
that acts on the information relayed by the central system. The body s internal clock induces sleep
when one is awake for too long, so this experiment is specifically designed to find the method the
body takes to induce sleep. The experiment in this article uses flies as the test subject to examine
which controller controls sleepiness and how long

Reflective Essay On Being An American
Paradise means something different to everyone. When I was little paradise to me was where my mom

little I was never allowed to leave her side, I was lucky she didn t home school me. I was always
confused as to why other children were allowed to do so much more than me. Eventually I brushed it

Marijuana Should Be Legalized Essay
Marijuana Should Be Legalized. Drugs are a major influential force in our country today. The problem
has gotten so out of hand that many options are being considered to control it or solve it. One of the
most controversial issues facing our generation is if we should legalize marijuana. Usually, people do
not know a great deal about marijuana they just considered it as any other drug. There is one thing
people should know is that marijuana is not like the others drugs such as heroine or cocaine. But,
marijuana is considered a drug, and in fact is illegal, due to number of reasons. For me, and so the

However, those who are against it think there will be an increase in people using the drug and
therefore a need to increase rehabilitation programs which will come at the cost of taxpayers and the
government . Maybe is right, people can smoke it everyday. But, we all know that man and women are
attracted by taboos, I mean everybody is attracted by forbidden things, especially teenagers. Actually,
teenagers like to experiment anything outside the norm of society. If the government decides to
legalize it, the physical damage created because of the drug abuse, can be control. Besides, the FDA or
others could regulate the quality and safety of drugs. Many drug users become sick or die because of
poorly prepared products. After all, there is nothing to regulate what is sold and no way to sue anyone
for product liability. By bringing marijuana into the legitimate business world, you can oversee
production and regulate sales. Moreover, concerning business and sales, it could be a source of
additional tax revenues. During a debate on that matter, one man said that, An enormous amount of
money is raised through government taxation of alcohol, cigarettes, and other sins . The legalization of
marijuana would create another item that could be taxed. I m sure the government would have no
problem spending all that extra money . On the one hand, legalization would mean a lower price; thus,
related crimes (like theft) would be reduced.

This is a red flag and a green flag at the same time. If AT amp;T is charging for data and making
money, then the trend of provider s charging for data could take off and cause inflation of wireless
connectivity. The upside could be that user s jump ship and begin using other providers instead of one
or two major providers. AT amp;T charging for data is scary too, since it could flag that they are
reaching the limits of their bandwidth capabilities. It could be safe to say, AT amp;T has just figured
out a way to make more money without introducing new and innovative technology. In conclusion, the
use of wireless technology in the corporate environment is taking off. It seems from the research I
have done that companies are excited about the progress being made in wireless connectivity. Wi Fi is
the future for businesses. As more and more companies have traveling employees and work at home
employees the demand will grow for wireless connectivity. Productive mobility is where the corporate
environment has come and will continue to go.

Attention Deficit Disorder Essay
Attention Deficit Disorder Attention Deficit Disorder otherwise known as ADD is a condition that
refers to an individual s inability to control their own behavior or impulse(McEwan 70). This can
begin in early childhood and interfere with children s ability to do well in school and social situations.
These patients also have troubles blocking out noise or other stimuli in order to focus on a task or
what is being said. ADD is a chronic problem that can be seen as early as infancy and can extend to
adulthood. There are two types of Attention Deficit Disorder. The most common form is Attention
Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD). The characteristic of this type is hyperactivity, which is seen

It is also more prevalent with in boys than in girls. In babies that have been prenatal exposed to drugs,
including alcohol, cocaine, amphetamines, and heroin, ADD needs to be carefully watched for.
Increasing numbers of premature infants are found to have the disorder as well. A psychiatrist or
clinical or school psychologist usually makes a diagnosis. In order to do this, physicians,
psychologists and educators conduct an evaluation that includes a health and developmental history,
medical evaluation, psychological and educational assessment, behavior rating scales completed by
the parents and teacher, and possibly a speech and language evaluation (Miller 25). Hyperactivity is
the most obvious symptom. Children with this condition are unable to control their actions even under
the most closely monitored situation. Parents often expect that certain foods cause hyperactivity, but
children with ADD are hyperactive even though these foods are not part of their diets. Other primary
symptoms include inattention, distractibility, impulsiveness and short attention span. There are
problems with organization and transitioning from one activity to another. The disorder can be
complicated by other kinds of learning and/or behavioral problems as well. Thought patterns may be
loose and poorly organized. Children have difficulty with memory, following directions and

How Does Joy Kogawa Show Sacrifice
Obasan Essay Sacrifices are a daily aspect of life throughout the world. Whether big or small all
sacrifices have significance. Giving up something of high value in exchange for another of seemingly

prime representation of the significance and importance of sacrifice in everyday life. Throughout the
trials and tribulations of the Japanese internment, characters in the short story Obasan must make

a great burden with the understanding that there would never be a real mother and father in their lives

Causes Of Civil Disobedience
Although civil disobedience rarely accomplishes the change that it demands directly, it does create
change indirectly through raising awareness and support. Civil disobedience works by relying on the
reaction of governments/societies after individuals rebel to rally support for the protest. If the
government/society violently crushes the rebellion, as in the case of Antigone, then the civil
disobedience wins by creating pity and sorrow for the rebellion. However, if the government/society
does not react, then the individuals are still successful by being allowed to get away with acts of civil
disobedience which spread their cause.
Despite the tragedies surrounding the American Civil Rights Movement, change could not have been
made without the violent reaction to the movement. Rather than stopping or slowing desegregation as
the violent reactions intended, they only created martyrs for which the Civil Rights Movement could
rally around. Famously, J. W. Milam and Roy Bryant kidnapped and murdered Emmett Till, a fourteen
year old African boy, on account of flirting with a white woman. Then, the guilty party was found
innocent despite overwhelming evidence otherwise. Although this incident may have been notable on
its own, it became a very powerful motivation for the Civil Rights Movement through the
confession/arrogance of the kidnappers, and the work of Emmett Till s mother, Mamie Till.
Infamously, Roy Bryant and J. W. Milam sold the story of Emmett Till to reporter William

points of view they will encounter. This may not be the average book, for example it is different than
the other literary works that are often discussed in the classroom. Even though it is not a story like a
fairy tale is, this type of book is still enjoyable and easy to discuss. However, there is a huge amount
of opinions in the text of its pages. Even so, if one sticks to knowing that they are just opinions and
not fact it gives less a reason to get confused and can make this a more enjoyable read. It is not all
about the structure of the book but more of the main thoughts it s author is trying to convey through it
s text. There are a lot of things someone could point out while reading this book. One of the best ones
to focus on though would be found in the first chapter. It starts out talking about how serious West
Point is when building their leaders. A good thing about the start of this chapter is after the author
makes the point of how serious West Point is about their leaders he then gives a very interesting
phrase to get the whole point across the readers mind. The phrase or statement is, Leader of character ,
when this is brought

Why People Drive In Theaters
Drive in theaters were once a staple throughout the country. Now they are almost non existent. The
entertainment unicorn still has value. It s an important experience that everyone should experience.
Especially millennials that have never been to a drive in theater. New technology often kills off and or
greatly reduces the interest it s predecessor receives .Phone booths and black and white televisions are
no longer commonly used. Millennials can discover the past thanks to the internet. However there is a
big difference between seeing something online and experiencing it in person. The odds of a
millennial experiencing scarce vintage technology is very low. But they can still experience a drive in
movie. There are still local drive in theaters in operation today. They are definitely out there. The trick

The Importance Of Walking Under Steady State Conditions
The current knowledge available from the literature on walking at different speeds assumes a direct
relationship between the level of activity of lower extremities muscles and speed. Several studies in
the past have looked into this relationship for walking under steady state conditions. In this section we
review these studies and their findings and we highlight limitations of their approaches and discuss the
suggestions to expand the analysis to walking under transient conditions.
Hof et al. [21] were one of the first groups to measure surface electromyograms (EMGs) from subjects
walking at different speeds. Five speeds were instructed for over ground walking and EMGs were
measured for ten walking steps at each speed. Parts of EMG profiles showed considerable changes
with speed while other parts did not show any changes. The authors suggested that the activity at any
speed could be estimated through a linear interpolation of sum of the profile at the lowest speed and a
function that represents the increase in the activity per unit increase of normalized speed. One
limitation of the calculations here was lack of statistical tests. Because of this shortcoming the linear
interpolation model could be used to make reliable conclusions only about the effect of speed on the
activity in the vicinity of the peak of each signal. Without building the confidence intervals we cannot
infer the effect of speed on activation profiles over the entire gait cycle. In addition to lack of

Dog Break Out 1000bm Sled Case Study
Dog Breaks Out 1000 lb Sled
In Dawson at a bar, Eldorado Saloon, on January 15, 1898 at 3:00 pm, a sled dog named Buck broke
out a sled weighing 1000 lb. He had to pull it an exhilarating 100 yards.
Three men were arguing about how much their sled dogs could break out. Then a man named John
Thorton who owns Buck jumps into the conversation.
That s not a lot compared to how much Buck here can start. He said indiscreetly.
Right then the bet was on. Buck had to break out a 1000 lb sled and pull it a 100 yard for $1000
dollars.
You re crazy to think that this is a huge exploit you know. But, I ll make it worthwhile and say that he

Low Carb Vs. Low Fat Diets
Justin Kinkead Mr. Roberts English 101 015 Research Paper 12/9/15 Low Carb vs. Low Fat Diets
Imagine that you are significantly overweight. One day, you decide that it would benefit your health to
lose weight, so you decide to limit what you eat in order to do so. You discuss this with a friend and,
he or she, being of similar body composition and weight, decides to set the same goal. Over the next
several months, both of you eat considerably less food than you usually would without regarding
nutrient intake. After this time has passed, you find that you have only lost a few pounds of body
weight, while your friend has lost near twenty. You tell yourself that this doesn t make any sense, but
you cannot help but wonder why this happened. Did you eat more? Did you exercise less? Did you eat
the wrong foods? Eventually you give up on trying to find an explanation, so you determine that this
happened solely as a result of genetics. Scenarios similar to this actually happen fairly frequently in
the modern world. Some people may live healthily or lose weight by eating in moderation, while
others develop chronic conditions and become overweight. This phenomenon has been studied by
scientists for decades, but the results of studies have often conflicted with each other. Despite this, it
seems clear that two major nutrient categories have the largest effect on health and weight:
carbohydrates and fats. However, it is still debated which plays a larger role in the matter. This paper

Diction In The Most Dangerous Game, And The Necklace
Depth of a story relies greatly on the author s unique way of conveying a tone. There are many great
examples of diction in any genre of literature, whether is be of someone s feelings, a setting, a mood, a
person, or an object. Without it, a story would be dull. Diction connects our senses to the actions, the
setting, and the mood of a story, thus enveloping the reader into it, which is exemplified beautifully in
The Scarlet Ibis, The Most Dangerous Game, and The Necklace. James Hurst s The Scarlet Ibis is a
perfect example of effective use of dictation, primarily the mood the described setting creates. In the
very introduction, the narrator brings a sense of distress, yet serenity: It was in the clove of seasons,
summer was dead ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Bronzino s Eleanor Of Toledo
It was interesting to explore through the gallery and see the different paintings by various painters
such as Botticelli, Leonardo, Michelangelo, and Raphael to name a few. A lot of these paintings varied
in image as some were just a painting of one person like Santo Da Tito s painting Machiavelli,
whereas other paintings had a lot going on like Vasari s painting Cosimo I becomes Duke of Florence.
One of my favorite paintings I would have to say is Bronzino s painting Eleanor of Toledo. The reason
that is, is because I really like the details in the painting. A lot of the art during the Renaissance were
rich in drama and emotion. In fact, in this painting there s vivid emotion that is portrayed in the
expressions of Eleanor and the little

In the essay Little Themes by Claude Chabrol, Claude Chabrol argues that the script of a movie does not matter, but the theme of the movie is the most important. He says there is no such thing as a big theme and a little theme , because the smaller the theme is, the more one can give it a big treatment. In this essay we are made to understand that a film s moral position should be in its form and style, not in an underlying social message in its narrative and that the content of a movie is subject to style. Style is something that is personal to each filmmaker. Style is what differentiate movies from one another. Several ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It deals with small, more intimate issues like doubt of your loved ones, but also reflects on international issues like racism. It is a story that teaches us to not be too quick to react. It teaches us that we should not yearn for the past, and aim for a future where we will not have anything to yearn for, and it is one of the reasons I continue to love fiction to this day. The story then continues to the battle in the central army HQ where Edward s teacher joins the fight. Envy was born with his prime emotion being envy, meaning he wouldn t ever be able to feel empathy, and this was completely out of his control. The main villain In Fullmetal Alchemist created artificial humans in which he implanted his emotions. Throughout the main characters Edward and Alphonse s journey, they encounter these people one by one eventually having to face them as enemies. The acts they do, their interactions with characters and their death all perfectly describe their respective emotions. In Envy s case, he was jealous of Edward. • 4. Significance Of The Ghost In Hamlet Hamlet by William Shakespeare introduces the concept of what to believe and what not to believe. The ghost scenes in Hamlet are no doubt a dramatic aspect of the play. Whatever may have been Shakespeare s views about ghosts, he incorporates the idea in a way that shows their significance. The ghost scenes destroy Hamlet s innocence by exposing him to the horrible crimes within his family and the ghost s appearance confirms Hamlet s suspicion that the marriage between his uncle and his mother had something sinister about it. The first appearance of the ghost, the characters debate on its reality and try to figure out why it roams. The readers are then introduced to two characters that are soldiers at the Danish castle Elsinore, Bernado and Francisco. The men hear a noise and become nervous, calling out Who s there? (I,i,1) Marcellus, another guard, and Horatio, a nobleman, arrive and say they don t come in harm. Then all of a sudden a Ghost appears. The men believe it looks like the recently deceased Hamlet, King of Denmark. I will show how the relationship between Sara and her father in Bread Givers differ from Rosa and the living incarnation of her daughter in The Shawl and Herzog s fight to gain custody of his daughter June in Herzog. They are all significant in understanding the parent child commitment in Jewish American families. According to these three novels, parents are obligated to their children parents must give emotional support as well as security to them. According to Norman Soloman s Judaism: A Very Short Introduction, the idea of duty is an act when one is obligated to carry out as well as a feeling of responsibility. In Judaism, a man s duties are defined by God s commandments. One must decree to the Torah, the first five books of the Bible as a guide to holiness. The complete theological idea of a man s role in life is comprised within the notion of mitzvah, which means duty . The term ḥovah, denotating obligation or duty is also used the same as mitzvah. To complete a divine commandment is to satisfy one s duty. In these three novels, duty is the chief reason for the actions of these characters. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Even if it poses no threat, the impossible chance of escape is itself nightmarish. This fear of the unnatural, sinister aura that infinity instills is demonstrated in Jorge Luis Borges book, The Book of Sand. In it, Borges uses the book of sand to symbolize the bible and other books in general. This symbolism alludes to the nature of books that they themselves, especially the bible, are infinite, and as a result can be sinister. Borges will use similarities between the book of sand and the bible in order to establish an overall theme, stating that books are infinite, and that is itself a dreadful prospect. For example, Borges found the book distanced himself from friends and family, which could be alluding to the schism societies endure following the introduction of foreign culture. A great example of this is within the fictional book things fall apart, where its main protagonist Okonkwo observes his culture torn apart by the introduction of catholicism; he feared the religion would destroy his people. • 9. Social Tension Surrounding The United States Essay Introduction In what has become known as the issue of the century by many (Buchanan, 2015), immigration has been a topic of debate and an area of sociological tension for several decades in the United States. It can be seen daily in our newspapers, television shows and especially in America politics. In fact, it could be argued that this form of social tension in the United States goes as far back as 1492 when Christopher Columbus first stepped foot on what is now North America. It was from this point that social tension surrounding immigration into the modern United States truly began between early European explorers and the existing Native Americans. Social tension surrounding immigration began to peak when large scale immigration into the United States started in the late 1800 s. In the early days of immigration into the United States the social tension surrounded the diaspora of the Native Americans which lead to the creation of indian reservations (cite US History.org). This early social tension primarily surrounded the obtainment of land and the establishment of property. As we move forward into history, modern immigration tension in America is more focused on immigration from Mexico. This paper will explore immigration into the United States and help determine why it is a source of social tension. Some groups suggest that immigration threatens America s resources and should be better controlled while others suggest that immigration is vital to the success of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 16. Bourdieu s Understanding the Power for Social Change Bourdieu describes habitus as a power of adaptation. It constantly performs an adaptation to the outside world which only exceptionally takes the form of radical conversion (Bourdieu, 1993). Bourdieu s concept of habitus enables us to understand women as a complex amalgam of their past and present (Bourdieu, 1990a), but an amalgam that is always in the process of completion. There is no finality or finished identity. At the same time, habitus also includes a set of complex, diverse predispositions. It invokes understandings of identity premised on familial legacy and early childhood socialisation. As such, it is primarily a dynamic concept, a rich interlacing of past and present, interiorised and permeating both body and psyche. Much of the dynamism of habitus is the product of the interconnection of habitus with Bourdieu s related concept of field. Field is a set of objective, historical relations between positions anchored in certain forms of power (or capital) (Wacquant in Bourdieu Wacquant, 1992, p. 16). A dialectic relationship exists be tween the two concepts. In one direction there is a flow of influence from field to habitus that produces a relationship of conditioning in which the field structures the habitus. The following is a listing of security metrics and their definitions: In the area of Incident Management the following metrics apply: Mean Cost per Incident This the average cost per security incident from a dollars and time perspective. The cost per incident is often measured in terms of opportunity cost of how the time could have been invested in other tasks instead of solving the security incident (Shari, 2009). Mean Time Between Security Incidents This is the aggregated measurement of how much time elapses between security incidents over a given time period. The mean time between security incidents is often measured in monthly increments and charted to compare the impact of security strategies over time (Wang, Guo, Wang, Zhou, 2012). Number of Incidents a very fundamental measure of security that all security platforms, even those available for free via vendors websites, report. This is the baseline of many security programs and measurement platforms today. This figure is often tracked over years to determine how well investment sin security pay off over time as well. Reaching the Cape of Good Hope in 1487, they were led by the navigator, Vasco da Gama, across the Indian Ocean to discover the sea route to the Far East in 1497. They knew of the existence of lands across the Atlantic and they had made several expeditions to the West before Columbus discovered the Antilles in 1492, but they had kept the knowledge to themselves in order to forestall the ambitions of Spain, England, and France. For a small nation, secrecy was the only available method of safeguarding the rewards of bold and successful exploration against exploitation by more powerful maritime rivals. The Treaty of Tordesillas (1494) settled the question of possession of the new lands between Spain and Portugal. It was agreed that territories lying east of a meridian 370 leagues west of the Cape Verde Islands should belong to Portugal, the lands to the west to Spain. This imaginary line, from pole to pole, cut through the eastern most part of the South American continent and constituted Brazil s first frontier, although the formal discovery by Pedro Alvares Cabral did not take place until six years later in 1500. First Settlements (1530 1549) Cabral s voyage was soon followed by other Portuguese expeditions. The most exploitable wealth they

  • 29. Methods Of Using Data Relationships And Computer Models Analytics is the process of using data relationships and computer models to drive business value, improve decision making and understand human relationships. If the Information Age began in the 1990s with the rise of digital technology, then we ve now officially entered the Age of Big Data, wherein companies like Google, Facebook, IBM, Teradata, Oracle, and SAS have the capacity to gather a lifetime s worth of data about customers and their behavior. But that data is just an incomprehensible pile of numbers until a skilled analyst turns those numbers into meaningful information, useful for making intelligent business decisions. Today, companies are searching for experts in data analytics who have high formed business and technology backgrounds, and who understand the importance of the latest data and Information Age trends. This requires more than simple data analysis. Prescriptive analytics focuses on trends using simulation and optimization, while predictive analytics uses statistical tools to predict the future, and descriptive analytics is concerned with enabling smart decisions based on data. Data miners and data analytics experts who are versatile in all three areas of analytics can help corporate executives translate their data into intelligent information, which provides companies a competitive advantage and increases their bottom lines. Analytics have made their presence felt in every industry, but they have a major role to play in the sports industry and many teams ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Your body has an internal clock that helps regulate when you sleep and wake up. This clock is called sleep wake homeostasis. Homeostasis is comprised of three parts. There is a receiver that relays incoming senses, a central system that interprets the senses, and an effector that acts on the information relayed by the central system. • 40. Causes Of Civil Disobedience Although civil disobedience rarely accomplishes the change that it demands directly, it does create change indirectly through raising awareness and support. Civil disobedience works by relying on the reaction of governments/societies after individuals rebel to rally support for the protest. If the government/society violently crushes the rebellion, as in the case of Antigone, then the civil disobedience wins by creating pity and sorrow for the rebellion. However, if the government/society does not react, then the individuals are still successful by being allowed to get away with acts of civil disobedience which spread their cause. Despite the tragedies surrounding the American Civil Rights Movement, change could not have been made without the violent reaction to the movement. Rather than stopping or slowing desegregation as the violent reactions intended, they only created martyrs for which the Civil Rights Movement could rally around. Famously, J. W. Milam and Roy Bryant kidnapped and murdered Emmett Till, a fourteen year old African boy, on account of flirting with a white woman. Then, the guilty party was found innocent despite overwhelming evidence otherwise. Although this incident may have been notable on its own, it became a very powerful motivation for the Civil Rights Movement through the confession/arrogance of the kidnappers, and the work of Emmett Till s mother, Mamie Till. • 43. The Importance Of Walking Under Steady State Conditions The current knowledge available from the literature on walking at different speeds assumes a direct relationship between the level of activity of lower extremities muscles and speed. Several studies in the past have looked into this relationship for walking under steady state conditions. In this section we review these studies and their findings and we highlight limitations of their approaches and discuss the suggestions to expand the analysis to walking under transient conditions. Hof et al. [21] were one of the first groups to measure surface electromyograms (EMGs) from subjects walking at different speeds. Five speeds were instructed for over ground walking and EMGs were measured for ten walking steps at each speed. Parts of EMG profiles showed considerable changes with speed while other parts did not show any changes. The authors suggested that the activity at any speed could be estimated through a linear interpolation of sum of the profile at the lowest speed and a function that represents the increase in the activity per unit increase of normalized speed. One limitation of the calculations here was lack of statistical tests. Because of this shortcoming the linear interpolation model could be used to make reliable conclusions only about the effect of speed on the activity in the vicinity of the peak of each signal. Without building the confidence intervals we cannot infer the effect of speed on activation profiles over the entire gait cycle. In addition to lack of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

One day, you decide that it would benefit your health to lose weight, so you decide to limit what you eat in order to do so. You discuss this with a friend and, he or she, being of similar body composition and weight, decides to set the same goal. Over the next several months, both of you eat considerably less food than you usually would without regarding nutrient intake. After this time has passed, you find that you have only lost a few pounds of body weight, while your friend has lost near twenty. You tell yourself that this doesn t make any sense, but you cannot help but wonder why this happened. Did you eat more? Did you exercise less? Did you eat the wrong foods? Eventually you give up on trying to find an explanation, so you determine that this happened solely as a result of genetics. Scenarios similar to this actually happen fairly frequently in the modern world. Some people may live healthily or lose weight by eating in moderation, while others develop chronic conditions and become overweight. This phenomenon has been studied by scientists for decades, but the results of studies have often conflicted with each other.
