This document provides an overview of system archetypes, which represent commonly recurring patterns of behavior in systems. It describes the escalation archetype involving a vicious cycle of competitive escalation between two players. It also outlines the shifting the burden archetype, where quick fixes to symptoms temporarily solve problems but do not address underlying issues, and delays in fundamental solutions allow symptoms to reemerge. Finally, it briefly explains the tragedy of the commons archetype involving overuse of shared resources due to individual incentives.
