9 Frame Analysis
Manchester Orchestra-Simple Math
Frame 1

The director has used a medium long shot in order to demonstrate the relationship between the father and son. The
mise en scene in the background shows a selection of what appears to be family photographs which further reinforce
the relationship between the father and the son. I believe this will have a huge impact on the audience, due to it
involving families, thus meaning that it could be heart warming and very relatable for the audience. A broad audience
would relate to this given the universal theme of the father and son relationship which would tap into a global shared
cultural knowledge.
Frame 2

The director has used a medium shot to show me that the child was involved in a car crash. This sort of shot
would play on the emotive responses of the audience , due to this scene portraying a young boy repelling from
an air bag. This could create tension with the audience because the boy in this video is quite young, plus it could
also be a reference to the dad protecting his son from the impact of the car crash, due to the air bag popping out
of the dads stomach.
Frame 3

The director has a medium close up to show the boy fastening his seat belt when walking away from the
woman. This also shows me that the death of his father has created post traumatic stress disorder, I know this
because the video keeps using flashbacks to show the audience what happened during the event. It also shows
me that the boy is trying to forget the car crash which killed his dad, due to him giving away the items which
generate these thoughts.
Frame 4

This director has used an extreme long shot to show the audience the boys flashback of the incident which
killed his dad, this will create a poignant atmosphere, due to it showing the very incident that killed his
dad, this will also play on the emotive response of the audience. It also shows you the impact the car crash
has had on the little boy, due to to the use of these flash backs which show the boys thoughts on what
happened and how he wished he could reverse time.
Frame 5

The director has used an extreme medium shot to show the audience the protective father figure that’s protecting his
son from some near ahead, I know this because the father his holding his gun to the side of him, showing the audience
that something dangerous is ahead. This will play on the audiences emotive response, due to it showing how caring the
father is towards his son. The clothes the father and son are wearing also show the audience that the father and son are
going out hunting. It also shows me the relationship between the father and son, due to their being another gun on the
floor, which also shows me that both enjoy doing activities together.
Frame 6

The director in this scene has purposely used an over the shoulder, medium long shot to show the audience a more
mature side of the boy, I know this because in this shot you can see him lining up his rifle to shoot the deer. This is one
of the boys many flash backs mainly because the deer in this shot is the one that forced him to crash. It’s also shows me
that the boy’s trying to forget his past by removing it from his memory, I know this because his main aim in this video is
to remove those items which cause him to have these surreal flash backs.
Frame 7

The director has used a whip pan in order to show the boy running away from the flash backs which seem to plague him,
I can also see that the directors decided to use a sepia tone for the video, in order to show how dull and grainy this little
boys life is. I can also see that in the video it’s autumn which shows the leaves decaying from the trees which could be
related to the little boys life, as in his life’s decaying just like the leaves. This scene also shows the audience that the little
boy is wearing pajamas which might relate to him being trapped in a dream scape, as in he’s imaging everything around
him.
Frame 8

The director has used a medium close up in order to show the unconscious man. I believe that the little boy in the other shots is
this man and instead of his dad being the one unconscious it’s the little boy in the dream, that could also relate to the car crash being
a childish thing to do and that he regrets the mistake and feels weak because of it. The high key lighting has been used in order to
show the man being carried away into a hospital room, or it could in fact be a metaphor for the man going to heaven, due to there
being copious amounts of white light surrounding his body, it also shows me that the past shots could in fact be apart of his dream
world.
Frame 9

The director has used a two shot, medium close up in order to show that the man has finally awoken from his coma and his dad
is there for him, which also shows me that his dad is the caring and protective figure like he was in his dream. I can also see from
the look on his dads face that he is feeling deep regret and emotion. In conclusion this relates to Todoroff’s narrative theory were we
have a new resolution, such as the man may be injured but he’s in good health and in the care of his dad.
