1. Grandaddy-The Crystal Lake
101 Shots
The video opens up with a shed soaring over a hilltop. I believe the director and editor of this music
video have decided to add this so that it would appeal to a more geeky audience, due to the band
being of the space rock genre. The next shot depicts a man holding a guitar covered in leaves, which
shows me that this band may want to also appeal to nature enthusiasts. From this shot I can also see
that the man playing the guitar is sat on a wooden chair inside a shed. This shows me that this band
don't take themselves too seriously. The other shot I have chosen to analyse depicts the five men
inside a canoe, rowing through the streets of new york. This shows me that the band indulge in silly
activities and also shows me that they are trying to appeal to a more open minded audience. I can
also see from this shot that the passers by are confused as to why there's five grown up men rowing
through the streets of new york and why they are holding instruments. This also relates to the
Andrew Goodwin Theory, It also shows me that this video is supposed to be cheesy, due to there
being flying shed and people rowing in a canoe, the green screen effects also show me this.
I believe that the genre of this music video is Sci-Fi, due to the soaring through the air in a shed which
appears to be a homage to the 80's Dr. Who in which the Tardis soars through the air during the
opening sequence, another thing that indicates this music video is aimed for the Science Fiction fans
is the music itself, due to the band incorporating science-fictional effects into their songs such as the
use of the psychedelic keyboard which sounds like a robot or a laser blaster at times. Another scene
that shows me this video is aimed for science-fiction fans is the bear fight which is done in the same
fashion as some of the old star-trek fights in which captain kirk fights off various foes.
I believe the way the video is represented in a way of appealing to fans of the band, due to music
video being very nerdy and incorporating certain science-fictional methods of creating videos such as
the cheesy green screen and confused by passers and also the villainous foe who in this video is
represented as a bear. I can also gather from this video that the band is also from the indie rock genre
due to them wearing checkered shirts, beanies and snow hats, which also shows me that they are
trying to appeal to both the indie and space rock fans.
