Gif analysis selfish giant (2)
1. This gif uses a low angle shot to highlight
the fact that he is vulnerable in this
scene as he does not have the power to
allow his friend to go out with him and
the mother has more, the low angle shot
also shows the imbalance of power
within this scene as the mother is higher
implying that she has more power then
the little boy.
The mise-en-scene of his hood shows the
audience that he is conforming to the
‘hooded chav’ stereotype.
The use of a wide shot is to show the
audience how isolated and lonely the
little boy is however the use of a low
angle shot could also show that the boy
feels strong and powerful. The mise-en-
scene presented is low-spirited and
weather is cloudy and foggy which might
represent the mood that the child is in.
Similarly it might also be a foreshadow of
the bad things to come later on in the
movie
As this is the first scene it immediately
shows the relationship between the
character and the audience. The
audience can see a dark silhouette of
the character but are unable to see his
face which creates mystery-keeping the
audience guessing and more interested.
The first gif uses a close up shot this
shows the intensity of the character in
this scene and what kind of emotions
they are experiencing.
2. The editing technique used in this gif, is
very simplistic and the scenes are a lot
longer even though it does include cut
away. The use of slow motion/ long
scenes are significantly used, as you
can see in this gif there is a close-up of
a young persons had being held by a
parent/guardians hand, this particular
scene is dragged as it may have
connotation or it may symbolise
something within the film (love, safety,
family etc.) or may overshadow
something to the audience of what's to
come. This editing choice of the scene
being longer allows the audience to
make a mental note that this scene is
significant.
As you can see in this gif, there has
been a variety of editing techniques
used. The use of cross cutting and shot
reverse shot , this is to show action
occurring at the same time. Here it is
used to show the argument between
the two boys, the back and forth
camera shots allows us to see the
expression/reaction made by the other
character who is the target. This editing
technique can be used to show
suspense or show that the characters
have a bond. In this case suspense.
Moreover, numerous fast paced editing
is used to keep the audience engaged
as they may miss something even if
they look away for a second. This gif
uses transitions also, a fade to show
that the scene has come to an end.
As you can see in this gif, the editor has
used fast paced editing this is effective
as it allows for the audience to have a
feel of how hectic the young boy’s life
is, allows us to feel as though we are on
his journey but most importantly we as
the audience are more drawn in/
engaged into the story line. The editing
choices always allows us to see the life
in different locations. As we cam see in
the rule countryside, life s more quite
and the days drags this may suggest
why scenes are much longer whereas
in the city editing is a lot more fast with
short scenes and many jump cuts used.
3. In this gif there director placed six
characters in the same shot which
presents a chaotic family. The chaos that
appears in this image reflects a working
class family; The plastic bags and empty
containers along the side show that the
home is ill kept which shows the audience
that the single mother might be
struggling to manage. This makes the
audience feel pity for the main character.
The mise-en-scene in this establishing
shot allows the audience to notice the
culture and background of the
character. The gloomy and cloudy sky
creates a sense of mystery and may
foreshadow later events in the movie.
The horses are moving freely in the
field which might be used to emphasis
the traditional area they live in. On the
other hand the horse could also
represent the freedom of the character
from such a young age.
The mise-en-scene displayed here is a
gang of school kids picking on and
bullying a little kid, this is a common
feature of social realism as bulling
takes place in a majority of schools.
The blurred books suggest that the
character is pushing education away,
this predicts later events where the
character is excluded from school – has
pushed education away.
