Byzantines Dbq
What is the primary reason to study the Byzantines? The Byzantine empire and its capital of
Constantinople existed for more than 1,123 years. A Roman military officer named Constantine, was
stationed in Britain. Later, he defeated generals and became a Roman emperor. He gave Christianity
legal standing within the empire and moved the imperial capital from Rome to Byzantium. Their
emperors are not the only primary reason why the Byzantines should be studied. They protected
Constantinople by building walls, preserved Greek classics, and began the Eastern Orthodox Church.
One reason why the Byzantines should be studied is because they protected Constantinople. In
Document B: The Great Ages Of Man , The walls of Constantinople were built to protect the city.
Primarily, to prevent attacks from the Huns and other enemies. Also, it was difficult for the invaders to
break through the wall because they would face another set of walls and troops. The agriculture
advanced and they were well prepared to keep invaders out. This helped aid the process of keeping
Christianity alive. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As shown in Document C: The World Fact Book, Eastern Orthodox Christianity still exists in the
world. Russia is listed on the chart as having the world s highest Eastern Orthodox population. Greece
is listed on the chart as having the highest percentage of Eastern Orthodox. In 2010, there were
250,000,000 Eastern Orthodox in the world. To this day Eastern Orthodox Christianity is still
worshipped and people should know that this is all because of the

The Four Mythical Elements Of Whale Rider
Many voyages that heroin s encounter are regularly identified with the four mythical functions. In the
film, Whale Rider, through mythical creation powers, the hero endeavors to save her dying culture.
The creation myths power permits the courageous woman, Pai, to find her actual calling as a real
leader of the Maori tribe. By utilizing the myths, she dynamically finds her legend s adventure by
breaking down the images throughout her life. According to Campbell as discussed in Indick article,
this model The Monomyth has different functions as he clarifies the sociological, mysterious,
cosmological, and mental elements of myth (pg, 2). Campbell depicts the vital capacities including
myths as legendary or traditional story, typically ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For the kid who might be the chief (Whale). Paikea turns out to be strongly fascinated on this legend
because of the way that she is the latest of the bloodline descendant, which implies she is prepared to
make every one of the basic decisions of being a chief other than the reality of being female. The
youthful heroic girl refers to the legend when contrasting with herself as an approach to empower her
rising as the current bloodline descendant. She keeps on participating in the myth all through the
movie with a specific end goal to express her enthusiasm for her way of life (William, 3).
Similarly, William in page three explains that Campbell clarifies cosmological capacities as stories
enable the person to decide his/her place in the universe. The stellar capacity applies for the Whale
Rider because of the principle character growing up being recounted of their legend of how the Maori
tribe traveled to the territory they are acclimated to now. Pai characterizes herself alongside her family
history; she expresses a long time ago, my ancestor Paikea came to this place on the back of a whale.
Since then, in every generation of my family, the firstborn son has carried his name and become the
leader of our tribe... until now, (Whale). She continually alludes back to the legend of her predecessor,
Paikea, as a path for her to get the idea she is fit to do likewise. Like her predecessor, Paikea could
spare the way of life which is the thing that Pai is

Russian and Chinese Advanced Persistent Threat Groups
Utica College
October 15, 2016
Introduction
In this paper I will discuss a total of four Advanced Persistent Threat Groups (APT). I will discuss
their motives, attack objectives, targets of the attacks, tactics, techniques, and procedures (TTP), and
attack vectors. I will propose strategies that would deter and provide defense against the group or that
type of threat. I will also discuss if the APT is state backed or if it is a rogue actor.
The four APT groups that I chose to discuss are APT 28 and APT 29 from Russia, PLA Unit 61398
and PLA Unit 78020 from China. I have chosen these four groups because they interested me while I
was researching the topic. They each have a little signature that makes them stand out. A few are
completely dependent on phishing campaigns when others are more streamlined and actually take the
holidays of their homeland off from their efforts.
Main Body
The first Advanced Persistent Threat Group (APT) I will discuss is APT28. APT28 is also known by
the names: Fancy Bear, Pawn Storm, Sofacy Group and Sednit . APT28 has been active since 2007
and targets political figures, government institutions, telecommunications and e crime services with a
concentration on European and Asian aerospace companies.
APT28 is a politically motivated group and are sponsored by

Personal Statement For Economics
The dynamics of today s constantly evolving world, drawn together by increasingly intertwined
economies and global markets has always intrigued me, ever since I was a young undergraduate. What
fascinated me most about economics was the effort to mathematically model this dynamic driven in
part by human behavior and social tendencies. During my undergraduate study, I got an opportunity to
explore various facets of global markets and got a chance to work on several academic projects to
empirically model economic theories. At the same time, I received the opportunity to intern at Ernst
and Young Financial Services, where I realized the vast potential of empirical asset pricing and
financial modeling. I realized the power of advanced data ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In order to understand this link, I developed a multivariate regression model using panel data from
four South East Asian economies by programming using statistical software Stata. I used a variety of
techniques including bootstrapping, Generalized Least Square regression as well as a clustered
regression model as robustness checks for the model. This opportunity gave me a chance to explore
global financial markets from a macroeconomic perspective. At the same time, it gave me a chance to
get acquainted with the vast literature in the field including the works of Professor Daron Acemoglu.
During my graduate academic and research experience at Columbia, I developed an inclination
towards quantitative finance, particularly asset pricing theories and the empirics involved in modeling
the same. At the same time, while studying Choice theory and Microeconomics under Professor
Ortoleva and Professor Bernard Salanie, I realized the role of irrational human behavior in driving
economic decision processes of institutions. I developed a curiosity to explore and design innovative
empirical techniques to model various elements of cognitive psychology and social tendencies into
traditional asset pricing framework. This curiosity motivated me to pursue a Ph.D. in Finance and
follow a long term career in academic research. What makes Stanford my first choice is the rigor and
intensity of its curriculum

Original Grizzly Bear Flag By Robert B. Ide And Men
California was ruled by the Spanish until the early 1800 s. Around 1822, news that Spain was backing
away from its northern colony reached California and led to some unrest and revolt. The state became
fully independent in 1836 and bears the Red Lone Star Flag which contained a single red star on a
white background. In the anticipation to end Mexican rule over the Free and Sovereign State of
California, Peter Storm designed the original Grizzly Bear Flag which was raised for the first time in
Sonoma, California in June 1846. Of those who raised the first flag includes William B. Ide and men
who became known as the Bear Flaggers. California was part of Mexico since its independence in
1821. It was called the department of Alta California and a province of New Spain for many years.
William L. Todd, cousin of Mary Todd Lincoln, designed another California Bear Flag. The star on the
flag began in the 1863 Lone Star Flag. From the letter of William Todd to Los Angeles Express, he
said that the star came from using blackberry juice and in recognition of the California Lone Star Flag,
and the bear was made to symbolized strength and unyielding resistance. Most think that the bear on
the first bear flag resembles the grizzly, but it resembles more of a common American black bear
because it shows the lack of shoulder hump and narrow muzzle. There was a brief history on the
original Bear Flag and the republic it symbolized during June to July 1846. A small group of American

Tom Responsible For The Great Gatsby
They were careless people, Tom and Daisy they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated
back into their money or their vast carelessness or whatever it was that kept them together, and let
other people clean up the mess they had made. (The Great Gatsby) The Great Gatsby by F. Scott
Fitzgerald is mostly a love story. The plot line is similar to Romeo and Juliet but the man is killed
instead of suicide. Fitzgerald really emphasizes the sort of forbidden love between main character
Gatsby and wife of Tom, Daisy. Gatsby is a very mysterious man thought the book and we are not sure
if he is lying most of the time or his story is true. The main mystery of this book is who killed Gatsby,
and what their motive was. George Wilson (husband of Tom Carraway) seems to be a likely suspect
for the murder of Gatsby he knew it was Gatsby s car that killed Myrtle, Tom could have told Wilson,

Dr. Bird s Advice For Sad Poets
Often in a novel the author uses their writings to talk about serious subjects and form a theme that has
an important meaning and message behind it. In the coming of age novels Dr. Bird s Advice for Sad
Poets by Evan Roskos and, The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky, the theme that you
should celebrate everything you are because what you re feeling is valid and shall pass is common
throughout both books.
In Dr. Bird s Advice for Sad Poets the main character, James Whitman is a junior in highschool who
wakes up yawping and quoting Walt Whitman. From the outside he looks like an enigma. He lives in a
small town with his abusive dad who kicked his sister, Jorie, out and, his submissive mother. James is
struggling with severe depression and anxiety. To help cope with what he s feeling, James has an
imaginary, human size, bird, therapist. Because she s living inside James head she is only able to tell
James things he already knows but just doesn t really want to admit. He talks to his therapist, Dr. Bird
, while he works at a pizza parlor to save up enough money to go to a real therapist, since he knows
his parents won t get him one. Another way James deals with his feeling is by hugging trees and
writing poetry. He begins to help write his school s literary magazine and starts to fall in love with
head writer, Beth. To make things worse, James continues to blame himself for his sister s misfortune.

The World s First Short Message Service
On December 3, 1992, the world s first short message service, or SMS, was sent. Neil Papworth, a 22
year old communications engineer from the United Kingdom sent the simple message Merry
Christmas, to a friend via PC (Gayomali, 2012). Like almost all new technologies, the initial reception
of the SMS was slow. In 1995, two years after Nokia released the first ever texting phone, the average
American user sent just 0.4 texts per month (Gayomali and Erickson, 2012). Almost 22 years later, six
billion SMS messages are sent every day in the United States (Kelly, 2012). Text messaging is one of
the most widely used data applications in the world, as 81% of cellphone users have texting as an
option on their phones (Erickson, 2012). As its popularity has continued to grow at an exponential
rate, it more frequently raises the question of whether or not the act of text messaging has ruined the
art of conversation. Texting has many advantages. For one, the recipient of a text does not have to be
present to receive a message. Currently, the majority of text messages are sent to individuals for
personal reasons (Faulkner, 2012). Though it is not face to face communication, texting is used as a
one to one method of communication between friends, particularly teenagers (Faulkner, 2012). Long
distance relationships, friendships and various other connections have become possible due to the fact
that people can communicate on a constant basis despite being apart. Texting has

Disadvantages Of Drinking Water Bottles
Littering is another problem with these bottles. When people get done using them they just throw them
on the ground, for example, if you go to a ball game and you see everyone drinking Gatorade, soda, or
water and then stay after and you will see all those bottles in the bleachers and on the field from the
players. You start to realize that know one really cares about the environment anyone. Water bottles or
just bottles in general are a big cause on the environment. Although many people do not care, littering
causes a lot of harm to the environment and not many people realize it. Even though drinking bottle
water is widely known as a good choice for your health it comes with great conflicts. Many schools all
around sell bottles of water out of vending machines, although this can be a bad thing for the
environment, but it also helps students from drinking sugary soda. Even though there are benefits to
drinking and using bottled water, there are also many drawbacks. Bottled water can be healthy, but
also just drinking from a water fountain can help yourself and the environment. Not many people want
to drink community fountains because of the germs and all the people that use them. Even though
water is a great need for humans, they normally want to go the easy way; the bottled water way. Water
fountains do have many causes of them, germs that it collects, and some even lack filtration systems.
Bottled water and other plastics can have many effects, although people have

The Horrors Of Human Trafficking In The United States
In today s world, people believe that all enslavement or forced labor of any kind has quietly deceased
over the years, that all types of enslavement are behind modern societies and totally in the past, yet it
has been exactly the opposite. An international office stated, Only one out of 100 victims of trafficking
is ever rescued. This means around only 24,000 out of the 2.4 million people enduring human
trafficking will be spared, ( Combating Human Trafficking ). Human trafficking is still a very big
problem across the world, even in the United States. Human trafficking has only increased over the
past two decades. It is also not likely that a person being trafficked is only enduring this for a few
months and then is set free; people are victims for multiple years, possibly even decades. Human
trafficking is still a serious threat to innocent lives across the planet because rates are increasing,
people are stuck in that vicious cycle for years, and it is damaging millions of people everyday.
There are multiple ways that people can be trafficked, all terrifying and even life scarring towards a
person. Hart stated, People are forced to work against their will, they believe that if they do not work,
they will be either physically or emotionally hurt being threatened constantly, (Hart 7). This shows the
true horrors of human trafficking. It is saying how that the traffickers inflict so much hurt onto a
person that they will do anything the other person says at the snap

I think that calling her father a Nazi is especially powerful not only because Sylvia Plath s father was
alive during some of the Nazi atrocities as a child, but also because it s an act of appropriation, to take
a nasty part of history and combine it with her poems, she wanted people to feel uneasy about her
work. The poem if read aloud is like a nursery rhyme but not at all loving or kind, she s through with
her dad because of all of the bad things he s done or because he wasn t a good father to begin with.
Barely daring to breathe or achoo makes me think that she was afraid of him growing up, and when
Plath says Marble heavy, a bag full of God, Ghastly statue with one grey toe I think she was trying to
explain as a child what she thought her father looked like, a huge guy who looked like a god and acted
like one except that he is frightening and looks like a ghoul. Every woman adores a Racist Plath says,
describing her father s brutality and how it made him into an idol/god. Plath pushes beyond poetic
tradition in her choice of metaphors, and by pummeling the reader s senses with the garish violence of
her images. The poem has an ironically affectionate title for one that is so violent and shows such
discord between the dead father, it s as if Plath has to exorcise her father out of the life

Gender Stereotypes In Halloween
Halloween is a popular time of year, where plenty of people dress up and having taste or poise is
optional. However, to many, Halloween may seem harmless and innocent, but as we age and the
growth of sex appeal increases, the amount of innocence decreases. Even though Halloween may be
simply fun and games, the gender lens and Freud s psychoanalysis lens assists in helping the reader
truly see now nauseating Halloween has become To begin, the gender lens can expose many different
perspectives to Halloween, especially when it comes to the exploitation and sexual stereotypes of
women and men, more specifically through the marketing of costumes. For instance, Scott Gilmore
states Jim from accounting with the nervous tic and therapeutic shoes always wanted to be a member

fishnet stockings, a micro mini and a halter top that helpfully explains SWAT. To any feminist,
Halloween is always quite aggravating, since women are always over sexualized yet men are deemed
as masculine as possible. Why does Halloween continue to define and market women s costumes as
slutty ? The author of the article may be male, but he persists to recognize the fact that women are
pressured to exploit themselves on Halloween. Society continues to follow the old stereotype of

Diversity In The Workplace
Essay The demand for high quality talent is outstripping supply and this is not expected to change.
The above statement is true in today s world economy and hence relying on local talents is not
enough, so companies should also consider foreign talent markets for obtaining high quality and
dedicated talents. The workplaces need to be more diverse in order to survive in today s non static
market. What foreign talents bring is vision and experiences which might be applicable in their local
market but the learning that can be obtained from those experiences will definitely help the company
which plans to hire them and that learning can be applied to similar markets as well. What is meant by
Diversity in Workplace? The basic concept for diversity is rapidly developing. It is no longer just
about creating heterogeneous workforces, but now it is also about using that workforce to create the
innovative products, services and business practices that can give a company a competitive advantage
in the market. And on a global scale, as companies compete, diversity and inclusion have to frequently
shift, as different markets and different cultures have varied definitions of what diversity means. In
today s market almost all executives understand that their companies cannot be successful on a global
platform unless they have a diverse workforce. A diverse workforce is necessary to drive innovation,
foster creativity and guide business strategies. When a company has people from multiple

Human Smuggling And Human Trafficking
Human smuggling is defined as the act of facilitating, transporting or aiding the illegal entry of a
person or persons across an international border, deliberately evading the country s immigration laws.
Human trafficking is similar, but not quite the same since the person being trafficked has not given
consent, while smuggling is under an agreement between smuggler and customer. A victim of
trafficking is also usually treated as possession to be controlled and exploited ( Human Trafficking
Gale ) . Human smuggling and trafficking both have damaging effects and the causality is left with
physical, mental and emotional scars. A majority of the people that are being affected are migrants
from Central America or residents of the Mexican highlands hoping to get work on farms or
construction sites in the U.S. Being smuggled across the border is very problematic. Not only because
there is a high risk of being caught, but if they are able to make it across they are generally unable to
pay for food, transportation and often don t speak English.( Dying to Leave. ) Victims of trafficking
are primarily young children or women whose purpose is to either be used as slave labor or some sort
of sexual exploitation like prostitution. Human smuggling and trafficking is such an important issue to
resolve because it s a violation of human rights, a form of organized crime, undermines human safety
and even threatens development prospects in many regions around the world ( Human Trafficking. )

Comparing the Democratic and Republican Parties Essay
Comparing the Democratic and Republican Parties Ralph Nader campaigned for the 2001 Presidency
by arguing that there are no real differences between the two major parties. In a broad sense, that
statement might seem true. Major political parties play a majoritarian role in an otherwise pluralistic
democracy in the United States. They are both majoritarian institutions trying to win control of the
government. The differences between the parties lie in each party s beliefs about the purpose and
scope of government. The United States is a government run by the people and for the people. The
whole population may participate in governing through the device of having a much smaller number
of people act on their behalf. In a pluralistic ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
All governments require people to surrender some freedom as a part of being governed and people can
justify surrending some freedom to this control in order to obtain the benefits of government.
Government has always served two major purposes: maintaining order, which is preserving life and
protecting property, and providing public goods, such as highways, state parks, etc. Recently,
government has pursued a third purpose: promoting equality. In the United States, the government s
fundamental issues are often defined as freedom, order and equality. How it decides to promote those
fundamental issues and how it chooses the proper mix of freedom, order and equality in its
policymaking has to do with the process of choice. Freedom means different things to different people
at different times, depending on what political context is being used. The two major senses of freedom
are: freedom of and freedom from. Freedom of means freedom to do something. It is the lack of
constraints on behavior. Freedom from means immunity from discrimination and it comes close to the
concept of equality. Order is viewed in one sense as preserving life and protecting property. Few
people would argue the need for order. However, order viewed in broader senses refers to established
patterns of authority in society and to traditional modes of behavior, such as how students should dress
in school (neatly and without outrageous hair colors) and what the press should not

INTRODUCTION When two substances undergo a chemical reaction, often times one of the reactants
will be completely used up before the other. This reactant is known as the limiting reactant. A limiting
reactant is the substance that controls or limits the amount of product which can be formed. For
example, think about it in terms of making grilled cheese. If one grilled cheese requires two slices of
bread and one slice of cheese, but there are four pieces of bread and one piece of cheese, only one
grilled cheese can be made because there is one slice of cheese. This would make the cheese a limiting
reactant and two other slices of bread will be unused and left in excess. This is known as an excess
reactant. In a chemical reaction the excess ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Unfortunately, achieving this task is very unlikely due to three major unavoidable sources of error.
The first one being the adherent property of the precipitate. The precipitate had a tendency to stick to
the sides of the beaker and even the bottom of the stirring rod. Even after attempting to wash it off,
most was able to be cleaned but a little bit of the precipitate was still stuck and would not come off.
This leads to having less than the actual yield. Another source of error was that the size of the filter
paper was awfully small. This made it so the chances of spilling the precipitate and not getting it in the
funnel was much greater than it should have been. Some of the product was lost during the transfer
from the beaker to the funnel due to this factor, in the end reducing the total yield recovered. Lastly
the substances used may not be 100% pure, this means that the mass of the reactants could have been
less than the actual measured amount. This means the mathematically calculated theoretical yield was
larger than it should have been. These impurities in the reactants do not yield the full desired products
so the yield will almost always end up being less than

Oedipa Mass In Thomas Pynchon s The Crying Of Lot 49
An illicit underground mail service, ran by highly trained assassins that originated in sixteenth century
Europe and is still thriving in twentieth century America, obviously the story created by an insane
person, yet Oedipa Mass, of Thomas Pynchon s The Crying of Lot 49, has made her life devoted to
unearthing this seemingly impossible gang in the 1960 s. Named co executor of the will of an
eccentric wealthy ex boyfriend, Peirce Inverarity, Oedipa is told about a rare stamp collection owned
by Inverarity that was comprised of fakes, all with similar water marks, symbols and inconsistencies
that Oedipa eventually concludes must belong to an elaborate illegal mailing service named
W.A.S.T.E. and further attempts to convince herself that this service is controlled by a murderous
group known only as Tristero. To prove the existence of such a group, Oedipa runs through a rather
elaborate internal appeal to logos to prove to herself through reason, logic, and facts that the Tristero
exists. While she does collect evidence and testimonies that suggest to the groups activates, Oedipa s
major support to the group s current state is deduced logically to remove any chance of some other
possibility existing about Tristero s doings. Though the conclusion of a deduction is meant to be
infallible, Oedipa purposefully makes errors in the establishment of many of the premises required to
make any sound conclusion. Though each deduction appears probable at first glance, deeper analysis

Odysseus In The Odyssey And Calypso, By Suzanne Vega
These characters in the Odyssey are going though some hard times. Because, Odysseus has been gone
for 20 years. His son Telemachus is trying to find him and keep the kingdom in check. Cause the
suitors are trying to take over and marry his mom Penelope. So will they get though this. In the
Odyssey by Homer, the character Odysseus is a war hero from Ithaca, he is motivated by his wife
Penelope and son Telemachus. Homer s stories probably can be traced to historical struggles for
control of the waterway leading from the Aegean Sea to the sea of Marmara and the Black Sea.
Odysseus is trying to find his way home, but he can t get there. In contrast, in Calypso, by Suzanne
Vega, the author provides a different point of view, of Calypso is a immortal who is in love with
Odysseus, Calypso was motivated to control men with her beauty. She kept Odysseus on her island for
7 years and she was sad about it but she didn t won t to be lonely anymore. ... Show more content on

A Bar At Folies Bergere
In late 19th century Paris, cafés concerts (best described as glorified beer halls (Clark 206)) were a
very popular destination for the people of Paris. Cafés concerts became an integral part of Parisian
social life, as they were visited by hundreds of people each night, regardless of class. A bar at the
Folies BergĂšre became the topic of Edouard Manet s last painting, as Manet tried to portray the new,
modern Paris, and the introduction of mass production during this time. A Marxist art historian, T.J.
Clark finds this particular painting important because it revealed a lot about the new, modern Paris,
and Manet s intentions with the painting. Clark focuses more on the emergence of the new social class
during this time, and how this affected the role of women in Paris. The painting, A bar at Folies
BergĂšre, has historical significance because of how it depicts modernity in the context of the
emergence of a new social class (the petite bourgeoisie), the introduction of mass production, and the
changing role of women.
Manet was well known for his paintings of modernity , which tried to capture Paris during the late
1800 s, revolutionizing painting during this time. He wanted to capture modern life, and this is why he
chose to do a painting about the Folies BergÚre. Cafés Concerts were considered very modern for
various reasons. They were described as being ordinary, yet successful. They allowed for the mixing
of classes to occur. There was no distinction in, who came

Rhyme Scheme Of Vasco Da Lasiad
Vasco da Gama is the chief character in The Lusiads, but he is not its hero. The poem s title derives
from Lusitania, the Roman name for the province that roughly encompasses present day Portugal. The
nation of Portugal and all of its people are the true heroes of this patriotic epic.
The Lusiads is written in ottava rima, a rhyme scheme of Italian origin that was commonly used in
Renaissance epic poetry. An ottava rima stanza has eight lines with three rhymes, following the rhyme
scheme abababcc. It is a flowing meter that allows the narrative to move smoothly, and the long,
assonant rhymes have a kind of lulling quality.
The Lusiads begins in medias res, or in the middle of the action. Vasco da Gama and his Portuguese
crewmen are in the East African kingdom of Malindi, having survived rough weather and an ambush.
The local king encourages Gama to recite the history of the Portuguese people, which he does, going
back to ancient times.
Gama tells the story of the Roman general Quintus Sertorius, whose successful rebellion drove a
repressive regime out of Hispania (now Portugal and Spain). Gama then describes the growth of
Portugal from a small principality to a significant European state. The story culminates in book 4, with
the 1385 Battle of Aljubarrota, in which the Portuguese defeated the Spanish kingdom of Castile and
restored the Portuguese monarch to the throne. CamÔes s patriotism is evident is his description of
Portuguese general Nuno Álvares Pereira s victory over Spain:
O er Tago s waves his gallant band he led,And humbled Spain in every province bled;Sevilia s
standard in his spear he bore,And Andulsia s ensigns kept in gore.Low in the dust distresst Castilia
mourned,And bathed in tears each eye to heaven was turnedThe orphans, widows, and the hoary
sires; And heaven relenting quench d the raging firesOf mutual hate. . . .
After this battle, the Portuguese were able to launch overseas explorations, and these initial voyages
are delineated in the poem. Finally, Gama tells the story of his own voyage, his circumnavigation of
the Cape of Good Hope, which the Portuguese called the Cape of Storms. It is here that the most
supernatural elements of the poem appear: Adamastor and a maritime apparition.

Famuos Thinker
Famous Thinkers Paper We shall overcome, we shall overcome, we shall overcome someday, deep in
my heart, I do believe, we shall overcome someday. These legendary words have been the foundation
for people of color since the long nights of captivity, slavery. Several prominent activists have made
immense strides in making those words a reality. Such individuals like James H. Cone and the
Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. James H. Cone, an advocate affectionately known for black

James H. Cone, a black theologian of liberation who like all other black theologians was seeking
freedom and justice. Cone has a strong condemnation toward racism and oppression of black people,
especially within the black church. He strongly believed that religion is the solution to any problem.
Dutifully, Cone turned to scriptures as the sanction for his demands, not allowing anyone or anything
to separate him from the love of God. James H. Cone main objective was to resurrect himself and his
people from the ashes of racism by using the foundation of the Black Church [scriptures] and
confronting adversity. Dr. King tussled with the cares of life looking for solutions, concern for his
family, and stood up for righteousness, justice, and truth. Dr. King knew what he was up against was
daunting and knew enough to call on the name of Jesus. Dr. King believed in the power of prayer even
through the countless number of threats he received and even arrested he stood unyielding for what is
right, justice. Dr. King refused to sink in the quick sands of racism and abhorrence. Dr. King realized
that he had to alter the mindset of society if change was to come. These two famous thinkers were
mindful of the test and misery they would face. Their work addresses the advancement for minority
people with the hope and promise to expunge racism among all people. During these historical
moments one could only imagine that the most important audience

Comparing The City And Uncharted Forest In Ayn Rand s Anthem
The book Anthem was written in 1938 by Ayn Rand and is about what could happen to the world if we
would agree to a collective society. The main two places in the novel are the City and the Uncharted
Forest which both have similarities and differences. A similarity between the City and Uncharted
Forest is that both have houses and towards the end of the book also that people are living in both
places (Rand 88 89). There are a lot of differences in between the City and the Uncharted Forest such
as that the City is completely discovered and the Uncharted forest is forbidden and undiscovered, the
house that Liberty and Equality discover in the forest looks a lot different than the ones in the City, the
City is called safe and never to be left whereas the forest is called dangerous and not to be entered and

Same Sex Couples Adoption Rights

explains thirteen states Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri,

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics illustrated children with gay parents and children
with heterosexual parents show no differences in gender identity or gender role behaviors. A research
carried out by Cambridge University consisted of finding differences and similarities between same
sex couples and heterosexual of adoptive families. Researchers discovered The differences that did
emerge relate to levels of depressive symptoms in parents, which are especially low for gay fathers,
and the contrasting pathways to adoption which was second choice for many of the heterosexual and
some lesbian parents but first choice for all but one of the gay parents. Not only does adoption rights
for same sex couples help create families but also Gay adoption increases the pool of couples who are
able to adopt, which can move more children out of the child welfare system into a stable family. This
is a pro not only for the child, but it also reduces the financial burden to taxpayers. (Child warfare
System). Another Research study was taken in Australia, Dr. Simon Crouch notes that in same sex
couple parents have to take on roles that are suited to their skill sets rather than falling into those
gender stereotypes. This leads to a more harmonious family unit and therefore feeding on to better
health and wellbeing. (Kids raised by same sex couples are Healthier and Happier ). Through these
studies there are positive responses that demonstrate same sex couples adoption does not cause any
harmful insecurities to the child, they are found to be the same as a child raised by a heterosexual
couple. Furthermore, same sex parents can provide shelter and love just like any other pair of parents,
yet children still need a

Assisted Suicide And The Euthanasia Movement
Assisted Suicide Imagine being in enough excruciating pain for a long enough time and deciding that
even dying would be better. Assisted suicide is affecting more people around the world every day;
either under agreeable or disagreeable terms, depending on each person s opinion. What is assisted
suicide and why is controversy over this topic still here after at least 1,500 years of existence (A
Merciful End: The Euthanasia Movement in Modern America)? There are many factors to consider
when one wants to figure out the side of this global controversy they want to belong to. Some of these
include financial demands, different types of assisted suicide, general suicidal rates (in areas where it
is already legalized), demographic facts, and its history. Assisted suicide has produced a series of
different outcomes within society: the raising of suicidal rates, arguing over the topic, and the
increasing of its popularity within the world. The term assisted suicide is quite self explanatory in its
definition: the suicide of a patient suffering from an incurable disease, effected by the taking of lethal
drugs provided by a doctor. Assisted suicide, in the areas that have legalized it, usually has to involve
a request to the physician for a medication induced death. In some places, people are able to choose to
die before illness takes control. This method has existed for many years and has not always required a
physician s approval. The history of assisted suicide is

Criticism And Symbolism In Moveable Feast By Ernest Hemingway
My physical science professor showed my class a picture diagram of the three pronged iceberg that
sank the Titanic. A fellow peer of mine immediately said, How did that small iceberg sink a huge
ship? My professor let the class debate back and forth for awhile before she zoomed out of the
diagram to reveal a hulking mass of ice below the surface of the water. She then went on to explain
that less than 10 percent of an iceberg rests above the water s surface. Ernest Hemingway models his
writing in the form of an iceberg. Hemingway s style of writing, called the Iceberg Theory, divulges
the facts essential to understanding the plot without explicitly stating the underlying structure,
allowing the reader to sense the story s details. Hemingway demonstrates the Iceberg Theory in his
memoir Moveable Feast.
In one instance in Moveable Feast, Hemingway uses the Iceberg Theory to reveal a character s
disposition through symbolism. This theory prevails in Hemingway s comparison of Scott Fitzgerald s
wife Zelda to that of a hawk. Hemingway says, Zelda had hawk s eyes ... (Hemingway 154). In this
reference, Hemingway assists the reader in visualizing Zelda s physical attributes and mental makeup
without directly expressing her appearance or state of mind. Because hawks typically have beady
black eyes, the eyes almost give the hawk a sense of emptiness or void; in the same manner, the reader
can picture the gap in Zelda s mind by visualizing the vacancy behind her eyes. After

  • 2. Byzantines Dbq What is the primary reason to study the Byzantines? The Byzantine empire and its capital of Constantinople existed for more than 1,123 years. A Roman military officer named Constantine, was stationed in Britain. Later, he defeated generals and became a Roman emperor. He gave Christianity legal standing within the empire and moved the imperial capital from Rome to Byzantium. Their emperors are not the only primary reason why the Byzantines should be studied. They protected Constantinople by building walls, preserved Greek classics, and began the Eastern Orthodox Church. One reason why the Byzantines should be studied is because they protected Constantinople. In Document B: The Great Ages Of Man , The walls of Constantinople were built to protect the city. Primarily, to prevent attacks from the Huns and other enemies. Also, it was difficult for the invaders to break through the wall because they would face another set of walls and troops. The agriculture advanced and they were well prepared to keep invaders out. This helped aid the process of keeping Christianity alive. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 3. The Four Mythical Elements Of Whale Rider Many voyages that heroin s encounter are regularly identified with the four mythical functions. In the film, Whale Rider, through mythical creation powers, the hero endeavors to save her dying culture. The creation myths power permits the courageous woman, Pai, to find her actual calling as a real leader of the Maori tribe. By utilizing the myths, she dynamically finds her legend s adventure by breaking down the images throughout her life. According to Campbell as discussed in Indick article, this model The Monomyth has different functions as he clarifies the sociological, mysterious, cosmological, and mental elements of myth (pg, 2). Campbell depicts the vital capacities including myths as legendary or traditional story, typically ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For the kid who might be the chief (Whale). Paikea turns out to be strongly fascinated on this legend because of the way that she is the latest of the bloodline descendant, which implies she is prepared to make every one of the basic decisions of being a chief other than the reality of being female. The youthful heroic girl refers to the legend when contrasting with herself as an approach to empower her rising as the current bloodline descendant. She keeps on participating in the myth all through the movie with a specific end goal to express her enthusiasm for her way of life (William, 3). Similarly, William in page three explains that Campbell clarifies cosmological capacities as stories enable the person to decide his/her place in the universe. The stellar capacity applies for the Whale Rider because of the principle character growing up being recounted of their legend of how the Maori tribe traveled to the territory they are acclimated to now. Pai characterizes herself alongside her family history; she expresses a long time ago, my ancestor Paikea came to this place on the back of a whale. Since then, in every generation of my family, the firstborn son has carried his name and become the leader of our tribe... until now, (Whale). She continually alludes back to the legend of her predecessor, Paikea, as a path for her to get the idea she is fit to do likewise. Like her predecessor, Paikea could spare the way of life which is the thing that Pai is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Critical National Infrastructures And National Security Arthur Sions CYB 633 Critical National Infrastructures and National Security Week Seven Research Paper Russian and Chinese Advanced Persistent Threat Groups Utica College October 15, 2016 Introduction In this paper I will discuss a total of four Advanced Persistent Threat Groups (APT). I will discuss their motives, attack objectives, targets of the attacks, tactics, techniques, and procedures (TTP), and attack vectors. I will propose strategies that would deter and provide defense against the group or that type of threat. I will also discuss if the APT is state backed or if it is a rogue actor. The four APT groups that I chose to discuss are APT 28 and APT 29 from Russia, PLA Unit 61398 and PLA Unit 78020 from China. I have chosen these four groups because they interested me while I was researching the topic. They each have a little signature that makes them stand out. A few are completely dependent on phishing campaigns when others are more streamlined and actually take the holidays of their homeland off from their efforts. Main Body The first Advanced Persistent Threat Group (APT) I will discuss is APT28. APT28 is also known by the names: Fancy Bear, Pawn Storm, Sofacy Group and Sednit . APT28 has been active since 2007 and targets political figures, government institutions, telecommunications and e crime services with a concentration on European and Asian aerospace companies. APT28 is a politically motivated group and are sponsored by ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Personal Statement For Economics The dynamics of today s constantly evolving world, drawn together by increasingly intertwined economies and global markets has always intrigued me, ever since I was a young undergraduate. What fascinated me most about economics was the effort to mathematically model this dynamic driven in part by human behavior and social tendencies. During my undergraduate study, I got an opportunity to explore various facets of global markets and got a chance to work on several academic projects to empirically model economic theories. At the same time, I received the opportunity to intern at Ernst and Young Financial Services, where I realized the vast potential of empirical asset pricing and financial modeling. I realized the power of advanced data ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In order to understand this link, I developed a multivariate regression model using panel data from four South East Asian economies by programming using statistical software Stata. I used a variety of techniques including bootstrapping, Generalized Least Square regression as well as a clustered regression model as robustness checks for the model. This opportunity gave me a chance to explore global financial markets from a macroeconomic perspective. At the same time, it gave me a chance to get acquainted with the vast literature in the field including the works of Professor Daron Acemoglu. During my graduate academic and research experience at Columbia, I developed an inclination towards quantitative finance, particularly asset pricing theories and the empirics involved in modeling the same. At the same time, while studying Choice theory and Microeconomics under Professor Ortoleva and Professor Bernard Salanie, I realized the role of irrational human behavior in driving economic decision processes of institutions. I developed a curiosity to explore and design innovative empirical techniques to model various elements of cognitive psychology and social tendencies into traditional asset pricing framework. This curiosity motivated me to pursue a Ph.D. in Finance and follow a long term career in academic research. What makes Stanford my first choice is the rigor and intensity of its curriculum ... • 6. Original Grizzly Bear Flag By Robert B. Ide And Men California was ruled by the Spanish until the early 1800 s. Around 1822, news that Spain was backing away from its northern colony reached California and led to some unrest and revolt. The state became fully independent in 1836 and bears the Red Lone Star Flag which contained a single red star on a white background. In the anticipation to end Mexican rule over the Free and Sovereign State of California, Peter Storm designed the original Grizzly Bear Flag which was raised for the first time in Sonoma, California in June 1846. Of those who raised the first flag includes William B. Ide and men who became known as the Bear Flaggers. California was part of Mexico since its independence in 1821. It was called the department of Alta California and a province of New Spain for many years. William L. Todd, cousin of Mary Todd Lincoln, designed another California Bear Flag. The star on the flag began in the 1863 Lone Star Flag. From the letter of William Todd to Los Angeles Express, he said that the star came from using blackberry juice and in recognition of the California Lone Star Flag, and the bear was made to symbolized strength and unyielding resistance. Most think that the bear on the first bear flag resembles the grizzly, but it resembles more of a common American black bear because it shows the lack of shoulder hump and narrow muzzle. There was a brief history on the original Bear Flag and the republic it symbolized during June to July 1846. A small group of American ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Tom Responsible For The Great Gatsby They were careless people, Tom and Daisy they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness or whatever it was that kept them together, and let other people clean up the mess they had made. (The Great Gatsby) The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald is mostly a love story. The plot line is similar to Romeo and Juliet but the man is killed instead of suicide. Fitzgerald really emphasizes the sort of forbidden love between main character Gatsby and wife of Tom, Daisy. Gatsby is a very mysterious man thought the book and we are not sure if he is lying most of the time or his story is true. The main mystery of this book is who killed Gatsby, and what their motive was. In the coming of age novels Dr. Bird s Advice for Sad Poets by Evan Roskos and, The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky, the theme that you should celebrate everything you are because what you re feeling is valid and shall pass is common throughout both books. In Dr. Bird s Advice for Sad Poets the main character, James Whitman is a junior in highschool who wakes up yawping and quoting Walt Whitman. From the outside he looks like an enigma. He lives in a small town with his abusive dad who kicked his sister, Jorie, out and, his submissive mother. James is struggling with severe depression and anxiety. • 9. The World s First Short Message Service On December 3, 1992, the world s first short message service, or SMS, was sent. Neil Papworth, a 22 year old communications engineer from the United Kingdom sent the simple message Merry Christmas, to a friend via PC (Gayomali, 2012). Like almost all new technologies, the initial reception of the SMS was slow. In 1995, two years after Nokia released the first ever texting phone, the average American user sent just 0.4 texts per month (Gayomali and Erickson, 2012). Almost 22 years later, six billion SMS messages are sent every day in the United States (Kelly, 2012). Text messaging is one of the most widely used data applications in the world, as 81% of cellphone users have texting as an option on their phones (Erickson, 2012). As its popularity has continued to grow at an exponential rate, it more frequently raises the question of whether or not the act of text messaging has ruined the art of conversation. Texting has many advantages. For one, the recipient of a text does not have to be present to receive a message. Currently, the majority of text messages are sent to individuals for personal reasons (Faulkner, 2012). Though it is not face to face communication, texting is used as a one to one method of communication between friends, particularly teenagers (Faulkner, 2012). Long distance relationships, friendships and various other connections have become possible due to the fact that people can communicate on a constant basis despite being apart. Texting has ... • 12. Disadvantages Of Drinking Water Bottles Littering is another problem with these bottles. When people get done using them they just throw them on the ground, for example, if you go to a ball game and you see everyone drinking Gatorade, soda, or water and then stay after and you will see all those bottles in the bleachers and on the field from the players. You start to realize that know one really cares about the environment anyone. Water bottles or just bottles in general are a big cause on the environment. Although many people do not care, littering causes a lot of harm to the environment and not many people realize it. Even though drinking bottle water is widely known as a good choice for your health it comes with great conflicts. Many schools all around sell bottles of water out of vending machines, although this can be a bad thing for the environment, but it also helps students from drinking sugary soda. Even though there are benefits to drinking and using bottled water, there are also many drawbacks. • 13. The Horrors Of Human Trafficking In The United States In today s world, people believe that all enslavement or forced labor of any kind has quietly deceased over the years, that all types of enslavement are behind modern societies and totally in the past, yet it has been exactly the opposite. An international office stated, Only one out of 100 victims of trafficking is ever rescued. This means around only 24,000 out of the 2.4 million people enduring human trafficking will be spared, ( Combating Human Trafficking ). Human trafficking is still a very big problem across the world, even in the United States. Human trafficking has only increased over the past two decades. It is also not likely that a person being trafficked is only enduring this for a few months and then is set free; people are victims for multiple years, possibly even decades. Human trafficking is still a serious threat to innocent lives across the planet because rates are increasing, people are stuck in that vicious cycle for years, and it is damaging millions of people everyday. There are multiple ways that people can be trafficked, all terrifying and even life scarring towards a person. Hart stated, People are forced to work against their will, they believe that if they do not work, they will be either physically or emotionally hurt being threatened constantly, (Hart 7). This shows the true horrors of human trafficking. It is saying how that the traffickers inflict so much hurt onto a person that they will do anything the other person says at the snap ... I think that calling her father a Nazi is especially powerful not only because Sylvia Plath s father was alive during some of the Nazi atrocities as a child, but also because it s an act of appropriation, to take a nasty part of history and combine it with her poems, she wanted people to feel uneasy about her work. The poem if read aloud is like a nursery rhyme but not at all loving or kind, she s through with her dad because of all of the bad things he s done or because he wasn t a good father to begin with. Barely daring to breathe or achoo makes me think that she was afraid of him growing up, and when Plath says Marble heavy, a bag full of God, Ghastly statue with one grey toe I think she was trying to explain as a child what she thought her father looked like, a huge guy who looked like a god and acted like one except that he is frightening and looks like a ghoul. Every woman adores a Racist Plath says, describing her father s brutality and how it made him into an idol/god. Plath pushes beyond poetic tradition in her choice of metaphors, and by pummeling the reader s senses with the garish violence of her images. The poem has an ironically affectionate title for one that is so violent and shows such discord between the dead father, it s as if Plath has to exorcise her father out of the life ... • 17. Diversity In The Workplace Essay The demand for high quality talent is outstripping supply and this is not expected to change. The above statement is true in today s world economy and hence relying on local talents is not enough, so companies should also consider foreign talent markets for obtaining high quality and dedicated talents. The workplaces need to be more diverse in order to survive in today s non static market. What foreign talents bring is vision and experiences which might be applicable in their local market but the learning that can be obtained from those experiences will definitely help the company which plans to hire them and that learning can be applied to similar markets as well. What is meant by Diversity in Workplace? The basic concept for diversity is rapidly developing. It is no longer just about creating heterogeneous workforces, but now it is also about using that workforce to create the innovative products, services and business practices that can give a company a competitive advantage in the market. And on a global scale, as companies compete, diversity and inclusion have to frequently shift, as different markets and different cultures have varied definitions of what diversity means. Human Smuggling And Human Trafficking Human smuggling is defined as the act of facilitating, transporting or aiding the illegal entry of a person or persons across an international border, deliberately evading the country s immigration laws. Human trafficking is similar, but not quite the same since the person being trafficked has not given consent, while smuggling is under an agreement between smuggler and customer. A victim of trafficking is also usually treated as possession to be controlled and exploited ( Human Trafficking Gale ) . Human smuggling and trafficking both have damaging effects and the causality is left with physical, mental and emotional scars. In a broad sense, that statement might seem true. Major political parties play a majoritarian role in an otherwise pluralistic democracy in the United States. They are both majoritarian institutions trying to win control of the government. The differences between the parties lie in each party s beliefs about the purpose and scope of government. All governments require people to surrender some freedom as a part of being governed and people can justify surrending some freedom to this control in order to obtain the benefits of government. Government has always served two major purposes: maintaining order, which is preserving life and protecting property, and providing public goods, such as highways, state parks, etc. Recently, government has pursued a third purpose: promoting equality. In the United States, the government s fundamental issues are often defined as freedom, order and equality. How it decides to promote those fundamental issues and how it chooses the proper mix of freedom, order and equality in its policymaking has to do with the process of choice. Freedom means different things to different people at different times, depending on what political context is being used. The two major senses of freedom are: freedom of and freedom from. Freedom of means freedom to do something. It is the lack of constraints on behavior. Freedom from means immunity from discrimination and it comes close to the concept of equality. Order is viewed in one sense as preserving life and protecting property. Few people would argue the need for order. • 22. Limiting Reactant Lab INTRODUCTION When two substances undergo a chemical reaction, often times one of the reactants will be completely used up before the other. This reactant is known as the limiting reactant. A limiting reactant is the substance that controls or limits the amount of product which can be formed. For example, think about it in terms of making grilled cheese. If one grilled cheese requires two slices of bread and one slice of cheese, but there are four pieces of bread and one piece of cheese, only one grilled cheese can be made because there is one slice of cheese. This would make the cheese a limiting reactant and two other slices of bread will be unused and left in excess. This is known as an excess reactant. In a chemical reaction the excess ... The first one being the adherent property of the precipitate. The precipitate had a tendency to stick to the sides of the beaker and even the bottom of the stirring rod. Even after attempting to wash it off, most was able to be cleaned but a little bit of the precipitate was still stuck and would not come off. This leads to having less than the actual yield. Another source of error was that the size of the filter paper was awfully small. This made it so the chances of spilling the precipitate and not getting it in the funnel was much greater than it should have been. Some of the product was lost during the transfer from the beaker to the funnel due to this factor, in the end reducing the total yield recovered. Lastly the substances used may not be 100% pure, this means that the mass of the reactants could have been less than the actual measured amount. This means the mathematically calculated theoretical yield was larger than it should have been. These impurities in the reactants do not yield the full desired products so the yield will almost always end up being less than ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

A bar at the Folies BergĂšre became the topic of Edouard Manet s last painting, as Manet tried to portray the new, modern Paris, and the introduction of mass production during this time. A Marxist art historian, T.J. Clark finds this particular painting important because it revealed a lot about the new, modern Paris, and Manet s intentions with the painting. • 26. Rhyme Scheme Of Vasco Da Lasiad Vasco da Gama is the chief character in The Lusiads, but he is not its hero. The poem s title derives from Lusitania, the Roman name for the province that roughly encompasses present day Portugal. The nation of Portugal and all of its people are the true heroes of this patriotic epic. The Lusiads is written in ottava rima, a rhyme scheme of Italian origin that was commonly used in Renaissance epic poetry. An ottava rima stanza has eight lines with three rhymes, following the rhyme scheme abababcc. It is a flowing meter that allows the narrative to move smoothly, and the long, assonant rhymes have a kind of lulling quality. The Lusiads begins in medias res, or in the middle of the action. Vasco da Gama and his Portuguese crewmen are in the East African kingdom of Malindi, having survived rough weather and an ambush. The local king encourages Gama to recite the history of the Portuguese people, which he does, going back to ancient times. Gama tells the story of the Roman general Quintus Sertorius, whose successful rebellion drove a repressive regime out of Hispania (now Portugal and Spain). Gama then describes the growth of Portugal from a small principality to a significant European state. The story culminates in book 4, with the 1385 Battle of Aljubarrota, in which the Portuguese defeated the Spanish kingdom of Castile and restored the Portuguese monarch to the throne. CamĂ”es s patriotism is evident is his description of Portuguese general Nuno Álvares Pereira s victory over Spain: O er Tago s waves his gallant band he led,And humbled Spain in every province bled;Sevilia s standard in his spear he bore,And Andulsia s ensigns kept in gore.Low in the dust distresst Castilia mourned,And bathed in tears each eye to heaven was turnedThe orphans, widows, and the hoary sires; And heaven relenting quench d the raging firesOf mutual hate. . . . After this battle, the Portuguese were able to launch overseas explorations, and these initial voyages are delineated in the poem. Finally, Gama tells the story of his own voyage, his circumnavigation of the Cape of Good Hope, which the Portuguese called the Cape of Storms. It is here that the most supernatural elements of the poem appear: Adamastor and a maritime apparition. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
