The Grand Scheme of the New Imperialism
Since it became a necessity in the 19th and 20th century to rule over other nations for economic and
political prosperity, the Europeans did the same for the sake of the mother country, which greatly
influenced the respective aspects. The European or the new Imperialism is a movement, which
brought the worldwide effect of white supremacy. As far as the ideas of historians are concerned, new
Imperialism was the product of economic rationale. It is obvious that every nation looks forward to
uplift their economic status. Although the new Imperialism was a product of economic rational, it was
largely justified for social and political reasons such as civilizing missions to help these countries out.
While social effects helped to cause the new Imperialism, it was the economic advantages that forced
the major plays of Europe into the grand scheme of the new Imperialism. The new Imperialism started
by launching a new era of expansionism, they conquered territory by colonizing nations where it was
easy to gain material wealth. . The imperial countries by the economic and technological powers tried
to restructure the reliant nations and regions that could supply them with the raw materials and food
products . This was primarily done in Africa and Asia on the basis of colonial invasion. The European
nations viewed Africa and Asia as a means to materials such as coal, iron and copper. They chose
these continents based on the material wealth and as well the convenience of their

Ups Of Indi A Package Deal
UPS in India A package Deal
The United Parcel Service is the largest package delivery company in the world. They have worked
for over 108 years to gain this title. UPS.com states that the current strategy is Create Value,
Transform, and Invest to Grow . This is a major reason that UPS currently has the competitive
advantage over other shipping companies. It is also the reason that the company strives to become
better at what they do every day.
The Company currently known as United Parcel Service, founded in 1907 by Claud Ryan and Jim
Causey two teenagers with a big idea and not much money. They started the venture by running
errands, carrying notes, and local deliveries by foot. As time passed and technology grew the company
evolved into delivering packages. Very quickly Merchants Parcel Delivery built a strong reputation
based on customer service and the care that they gave to each package. In 1919, they became United
Parcel Service , and started domestic expansion. By the 1920s UPS was changing in response to their
external environment. They soon started offering unique features such as daily pickups. During the
time leading up to World War II, the United States suffered a major fuel shortage. Retailers started to
encourage customers to carry their parcels home and not ship them. United Parcel Service shifted
strategy to expand their retail store services. The next strategy change was to pursue the common
carrier right. After many legal battles, in 1975 the

Recommendations And Improvements Of The Fishbone Diagram
PROCESS RECOMMENDATIONS AND IMPROVEMENTS After defining our standards,
measuring the data, and analyzing the information it was time to improve the products and processes.
This was done by assessing the manpower, materials, methods, meals, and machines related to the
process. The tools used in the analysis were the fishbone and the process flow diagrams shown below.
Some concepts on the fishbone diagram are related to the product directly while others are related to
the delivery process, the staff and the physical appearance of the restaurant. However, all of the factors
relate directly to the customer satisfaction and an enjoyable dining experience. A detailed description
of these aspects will now be discussed, along with how to implement these changes. There are many
possibilities for how the materials could be improved. First, tables and chairs should be maintained at
higher standards. This could be improved by setting time limits on clearing and resetting tables. For
example, tables must be cleaned no longer than two minutes after the customers leave the table .
Second, restrooms should be maintained on routine schedules. For example, staff should inspect
restrooms every 30 minutes and sign posted inspection sheets verifying that they were sanitized and
restocked. Furthermore, changing tables, hand sanitizers and baby wipes should be available in all
restrooms. Even the music in the restrooms was an added bonus. Third, cloth napkins and finer
utensils

Rosh Hashanah Research Paper
Being both Jewish and American, we have take part in celebrating two New years one in January and
the other generally in September. Despite the fact that the both holidays ring in the new year and we
get a break from school, Rosh Hashanah holds a different and deeper meaning.
On the surface both holidays seem to be the same: there are resolutions, there are celebrations taking
place, and we bustle around to prepare for coming holidays. However, when you take a closer look
you can see that these are only shallow similarities. Both on New Years and on Rosh Hashana we
make resolutions, promising to begin to better ourselves. However on New Years our resolutions are
for us. We make promises to ourselves. When we make resolutions they not only involve but a second
party as well. They also involve hashem. We promise to try and keep his mitzvot better. The promises
we make on rosh hashanah are not only for us but also for Hashem. On New Years the promises we
make are for us. Finally, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
for rosh Hashanah we either spend hours in the kitchen cooking up a storm or we make a run to the
supermarket for some more apples and honey or brainstorming a new fruit. Or perhaps we are sending
a text or making a phone call to any and everyone we know, asking for their forgiveness. We are
pushing ourselves to be ready, making ourselves the best we can, giving Hashem reasons to inscribe
our name in the Book of Life. This is something you can find every Jew doing on the eve of Rosh
Hashanah. However, when it comes to dealing with the secular New Year, things are quite different.
Firstly, the hustle and bustle of getting ready for a party is not required, some people opt to stay at
home and watch the ball drop on their TV. Secondly, there is no asking friends and family and teachers
and classmates to forgiveness. We do not worry about Hashem judging us, and there is no anxiety
about being written in the book of

Timken
Executive Summary
From our DCF calculations, the value of Torrington as a stand alone entity is $1.181 billion. However,
the maximum purchase price for Torrington should only be $641 million. The optimum debt amount
for this transaction would be $301 million. This amount of debt would result in a total debt to capital
ratio for Torrington of 47%, within the range for a BBB investment grade debt rating. The combined
entities, Torrington Timken, would produce an interest coverage ratio of 3.2, and a debt ratio of 45%,
again within the range for a BBB debt rating. The purchase would likely be a cash transaction.

in our calculations, as this company exhibited dramatic value differences to others in the sample,
(likely to skew our results and prove misleading). Using the average of the revised sample field for
each ratio, we inserted Torrington s values where appropriate to generate an entity value. The findings
generated two values for Torrington, 606 million and 398 million. Taking the average of these two
numbers, Torrington exhibited a relative value of 502.41 million. Because of the lack of related
information given in the case, and the often large differences in measures amongst competitors,
different capital structures, internal management strategies, there remained many unknowns in our
model. We decided it would be best to use this valuation to reaffirm our assumptions in our DCF
valuation. (Please see exhibits)
DCF Model Based on information given, we established the free cash flows from operations for
Torrington, for the period 1999 to 2007. We made the assumption that net working capital was 7% of
sales for Torrington, based on historic patterns. From this assumption, we found Change in Net
Working Capital for the selected years. Next, we chose a value for Capital Expenditures , again based
on historic patterns. From this we computed the Free Cash Flows to the Firm .

Developmental Trauma or Developmental Psychopathology researched by Maughan Cicchetti (2002)
report on the consequences of interpersonal trauma and disruption of caregiving systems on the
development of affect regulation, attention, cognition, perception, and interpersonal relationships. Şar
(2014: 171 179) states that research into patients with dissociatve disorders report the highest
prevalance of childhood abuse and/or neglect of all mental health disorders and asserts that
dissociation can result from deep rooted developmental stress. This project will concentrate on the
links in developmental trauma with the forming of dissociative traits and discuss whether dissociation
is essentially related to the developing self. An in depth look at what is developmental trauma and the
aetiology of dissociation will be covered. Using clinical examples, the implications for clinical
practice in child psychotherapy will be considered. There is not scope here to look at each dissociative
phenomena in great depth so this project will concentrate on dissociation as a whole.
Developmental Trauma, the Key Aspects
Trauma or traumata as described in Rycroft (1995) are experiences which disrupt or pervert
development. They define it as any unexpected experience which the subject is unable to assimilate.
Developmental, or as it is sometimes called, complex trauma, is concerned with a child s prolonged
exposure to traumatic events such as, neglect, abuse, abandonment, violence and

Panera Bread Company Essay
A loaf of bread in every arm is the mission statement of Panera Bread Company (Vincelette Fogarty,
2010, p.1). Panera started as a small bakery under the name Au Bon Pain and grew to one of the
largest fast food service companies in the U.S. In 2008 they had the 5th overall rating in the restaurant
industry. Panera Bread is widely recognized for driving the nationwide trend for specialty breads
(Panera Bread, 2011).

The sale of Au Bon Pain lead to their corporate name change to Panera Bread Company. In the early
2000 s the company grew through franchise agreements, acquisitions and expansion. In 2010 Shaich
stepped down from his roll of CEO to the company s executive chairman to focus on concept and
strategy. Shaich had what he referred to as concept essence the blueprint of what he wanted to achieve.
Concept essence included a focus on artisan bread, quality products and a warm, and friendly, and
comfortable environment (Vincelette Fogarty, 2010, p4.).
Strategy
Panera has three business segments: Company owned bakery café, franchise operations and fresh
dough operations. The company s growth strategy was to grow their store profits, to increase
transactions and gross profits per transaction, use capital wisely and put into place drivers for concept
differentiations and competitive advantage (Vincelette Fogarty, 2010, p7.). In 2009 while everyone
else was experiencing the hard economic times Panera Bread was sticking to their strategic plan.
Panera did not lay off employees, or worry about closing underperforming stores. Instead, they
continued to add menu items and even increased prices on existing items. This strategy worked for
them and they were able to take advantage of clientele that came from fine dining. The company has

The Great Train Robbery And Edwin Porter
In this essay I will be discussing five key points throughout Post Production history between the 1900s
1960s. Post Production is seen as a vital component in the cinematic industry as it essentially finalises
the final products. Techniques that have been developed over the years are incredibly important, but
they all have an origin. Although these techniques started out without overwhelming effect, they are
now unbelievably crucial to how films are constructed. The five points I wish to discuss go as follows:
The Great Train Robbery and Edwin Porter himself, D.W. Griffith and his overwhelming influence on
editing, The Jazz Singer, the Kuleshov Effect and finally, 2001: A Space Odyssey. As well as
discussing these key factors, this essay will take into consideration secondary material. In the early
years of post production, there was a distinct lack of editing within the film industry. Everything
filmed was for the most part one continuous shot and lacking too much creativity in the post
production region. Edwin Porter was one of the key founders that changed the way post production
was addressed. Although he originally filmed following what is referred to as Aristotelian construction
(Musser, 1991, p167) he began paying closer attention to how a story could be told more effectively
through visual representation. Edwin began straying away from Aristotelian construction and instead
opted to use cutting to help him create the story he wished to create. Whilst this was not an

What Was The Potato Famine
Was the Potato Famine an accident? It had little to do with the declines in food production. The bad
seasons were the cause of the death that happened during this time. You would think that the main
cause of the potato famine would be plant disease, but England s long running political hegemony
over Ireland was a huge factor.
Since the demand for potato s was higher there was a greater need to supply more, and so then
everyone started on the frenzy for potato s. When there was a strain of Phytophthora infestation
caused the widespread devastation of potato crops in Ireland and Northern Europe. The system started
to fail, and the demand for food (potato s) became greater, and then the supply of them was not met.
During this time there

deal of commitment to his teachings and hoped they would help others find success and meaning in
life. The way he approached his principles was empowering because it related to all types of students
whether they were looking to learn about religion, politics, philosophy, or lifestyle, and the list goes

insightful and powerful teachings. He portrayed a clear message to achieving success not by luck, but
with the power of universal principles. Stephen Covey traveled to many different countries, and he

The Project Heart Healing Ceremony And Film
The Project Heart healing ceremony and film can be described by thinking of it in terms of story
types. Annette Simmons suggests various story types that storytellers may choose from when
attempting to lead or influence others. Simmons discusses one, the Vision story, in which the
storyteller uses sensory detail to express an emotional appeal for a future outcome (14 17). Thus,
Leslie asks residential school survivors to share their life experiences with members of their
community. She does this because she has a vision that when members of the audience honor the
journey of survivors by hearing their testimony, it will help all members of her community to heal. So

She also uses her public platform to teach that sharing stories and having them acknowledged and
honored leads to a path for healing for those whose voices have been historically silenced. Another
leadership story type that Simmons discusses is the Values in Action story, which brings values to life
by respectfully instilling [them] in a way that keeps people thinking for themselves (20). Leslie asks
the schoolchildren to imagine what it must have been like to be raised in an Indian residential school,
stating that the children are the next generation who will walk forward with values and ideals that will
change our world and make it a better place (Project Heart). The adults who participated in the
ceremony (in addition to those who view it through film) must also face the same question, as well as
face their individual and collective values as demonstrated by their response to her poignant inquiry.
That is to say, if adults see children acting according to a certain ethical standard, the adults are also
likely to choose to follow with their own ethical actions. Finally, Simmons discusses what she names I
know what you are thinking stories, in which the storyteller attempts to name the audience s
objections as a way of disarming any potential resistance to influence (23 26). Leslie tells the children
at the beginning and the end of the Project Heart film that she teaches history from multiple
perspectives because she loves Canada. I tell

Italian Humanism s Role In The Italian Renaissance
Over through course of time religion has been a big part of people s life. During the 1300 there was a
sudden change in behavior and belief. The Italian started, and it caused a change in belief. The belief
of Humanism as well caring more about how they live now than the afterlife. It was the sense of
rebirth at the time, but caused a lot of problems. While the Renaissance lead Italians to accomplish
great things, in relationship to Christianity it was disrespectful to social norms.
Humanism played a huge role in the Italian Renaissance as it changed the landscape of the Italians.
The definition of Humanism is an outlook or system of thought attaching prime importance to human
rather than divine or supernatural matters. Humanist beliefs stress the potential value and goodness of
human beings, emphasize common human needs, and seek solely rational ways of solving human
problems. It relation to the Italian humanism It s the influence of behavior that relate to the goodness
of humanity as all humans are good. The Italians were influenced by the romans because the romans

Going in depth with Christianity, The Christians believed in believing in one and only one god. They
hated the romans and their views because they were pagans and had many gods to look up to. The
Christians believe in justification by faith with that through their belief in Jesus as the Son of God.

The Economic Growth of Japan
Japan may have restored sovereignty to the Emperor and updated its Feudal government to a modern
system, but its economy could not reach its potential unless Japan compensated for its need of
resources such as oil, rubber, and metals (Columbia University). The Empire of Japan, as it was called
from the Meiji Restoration until post World War Two invaded a series of countries from the late 1800
s to the 1940 s. These include the Sino Japanese War (1895), Russo Japanese War (1905) both over
Korean domination, Manchuria (1931), China (1937), and French Indochina (1940) (Columbia
University). The government was still militaristic and expansion for economic gain was the direction
Japan chose (Japan Guide). This is seen through the risks Japan took to get the benefits of the
invasions, such as Korea and its raw materials, and the supplies of Manchuria, China, and French
Indochina. Lastly, Japan wanted to go after British and Dutch colonies to help secure their defense.
The only thing standing in the way of taking these territories was the American Navy (Columbia
University). Now Japan has to gamble. However, Japan has won wars against both Russia and China
from a few decades before. Not only has Japan gained what they wanted from them, but they have
established themselves as a power and gained respect (Japan Guide). With a great sense of
Nationalism and militarism, Japan has convinced people that loyalty to the country and the ways of

The Importance Of Learning English Language
In this article, Karmos and Csizér illustrate the way acquisition of language in different age gaps
through incentive to learn English language as a second form of communication. The study offers a
description of learning English in three different learner populations in Hungary. The population
included university students, secondary school students, and adults. The researchers used
questionnaires that were given to the population of the study to evoke their feeling on learning the
second language so that they could understand the difference between the acquisitions of English as
their second language.
Reason why the study/article was needed
The article was needed so that we can understand the impact of motivation on the different group in a
society in acquiring or rather their ability and interest in learning new things. In this case, the article
offers the insight on the kind of motivation different aged people requires or has an interest in for
learning a new language. It is through the various age groups that we came to know that young
secondary students are impacted by attitude and desire along with anxiety to be the first one to learn
the language. The research was needed to understand the effects that are associated with learning a
second language and the type of motivation the different age group requires to be in a position to learn
a language. We wanted to acknowledge the importance of giving skills and knowledge to the student
so that they can have a sense of

The sheet was at first intended to assist the auditors in performing their job but it will be re used to
help validate that the company is properly recognizing deferred revenue when it is earned. The reason
for re using the spreadsheet is because the company has gotten more customers than usual, who wish
to pay in advance. This advanced payment creates a liability, that needs to be recognized properly. The
spreadsheet was created by creating a smartlist using Great plains that displays all information related
to Deferred Revenue. After creating the smartlist, the information was exported into an excel
spreadsheet Deferred Revenue Transactions , which was all that the auditors required. Then to re use
the workbook a new sheet Deferred Revenue Balance was added, which pulled information from the
first sheet through formulas. After creating the formulas on the second spreadsheet, any information
inputted into the first sheet was moved to the second sheet in a more organized and informative

Norway and Its Climate Changes
Climate change is a major global issue and is a pressing issue in Norway as well. The country has
ratified the Kyoto Protocol and signed on to other treaties regarding the state of the earth. Similar to its
history, current climate changes may have adverse effects on the culture and economy of Norway. Two
significant climate change issues in Norway are carbon dioxide (CO 2) emissions and the warming of
the Arctic Ocean; both have important impacts on both Norway and the world.

Some animals that will be affected include reindeer, certain birds, and fox. Aquatic animals will also
be affected by the decline in sea ice and the warming water temperatures. Certain fish will not be able
to tolerate the increased temperature and their population will decrease, which could be detrimental on
the Norwegian fishing industry. A third significant impact the decrease in sea ice in the Arctic will
have on Norway is increasing marine access to oil, gas and other mineral sources (ACIA 114). As a
student of how weather and climate affect society and climate change, it would seem that an increase
in access to oil and mineral sources could have a detrimental effect on any progress in reducing carbon
emissions. If Norway is able to increase its oil production, then there would be an increase in carbon
emissions as well, which is something that the country has been trying to reduce for over a decade.
The decrease in sea ice and the retreat of glaciers has occurred in Norway before. At the end of the Ice
Age, over 10,000 years ago, hunters and gatherers followed the glaciers as they retreated north,
pursuing migratory reindeer herds, which is similar to what scientists predict the reindeer will do
again in the near future (Lonely Planet). There is a difference between the warming of the climate ten

Examples Of Adaptive Traits In An Organbird
ADAPTATION AND TRAITS
One of the adaptive traits that are said to have evolved in the population of an organism is the beak of
the the bird called the Finch. Most notably, birds are similar in the sense that they have wings yet most
birds exhibit differences in size.some birds are small while others are big.One very importantly feature
that make birds distinct is the shape and size of the beak. This is intresting how birds can be so
different yet belong to the same species. however. This is due in part to assist the birds in the way of
feeding in order for the birds to survive in their environment.
Describe what makes this trait an adaptation.

traits that developed to perform a certain function and allow organisms to thrive in their environment.

Taking a Look at Free Trade
Free trade is something that WTO encourages globally and insists that no government interference
should take place in international trade and that this will be followed by specialisation and an increase
in countries welfare. Countries however want a competitive advantage and to obtain this interference
takes place in the form of restrictions. Most highly competitive countries are well off economically,
has respectable infrastructure, high levels of education and technology, steady political and social
status and strong international positioning. Restrictions are set in motion for several reasons, all of
them follow. First we distinguish between tariff barrier restrictions and non tariff barrier restrictions.
Tariffs are imposed on either exports or imports and include a payment, like taxes that the government
imposes on goods that leaves or enters the country. Import tariffs are more common than export tariffs.
Ad valorum is a type of tariff which entails that you pay a fixed % on goods. For example, if you
import R1200 of merchandise, and the ad valorum is set at 12%, you have to pay R144 duties on the
goods. Another tariff is a specific rate tariff which means a specific amount for each unit is expected
to be paid. For example if the amount is set at R200 specific rate for every tv imported to SA, every
unit that is imported has to pay R200. A compound rate is the last tariff type restriction, and combines
ad valorum and specifics tariffs which mean you have to pay a set

Essay On Gender Inequality
Amnesty International
5 Penn Plaza, 16th Floor
New York, NY 1001
Dear Advocacy Representative, As many of us know throughout history there have been many
inequalities that the world has been faced with; whether it is race, gender, or ethnic background. I am
writing you, the representatives for Equal Rights to discuss an urgent concern of American women in
the workplace. Although gender inequality is decreasing, it still exists and makes a lot of people suffer
its consequences every day. Gender inequality is unfair rights between male and female based on
different gender roles which leads to unequal treatment. Gender inequality has been widely known in

This historic rise came about in 2005 and, since then, the pay gap has remained roughly unchanged.
Women as a whole experience the gender pay gap but there is also a racial pay gap. A woman makes
77 cents for every dollar a Caucasian man makes.
Last year when looking at median hourly pay, black workers earned $18.49 an hour. White workers
earned an average of $25.22 an hour. Caucasian women make about 75 cents to every dollar a
caucasian man makes. Asian women make an average of 85 cents to every dollar a caucasian man
makes. For black, Latina, and Native women, that number is significantly lower. On average, Latina
and black women who are low wage earners and work full time live below the poverty line. White
men who are low wage earners and work full time live above the poverty line.
According to the map from National Women s Law Center women lose $418,800 over a 40 year
career. That number is more than double from latina and black women. It will take years for the gap to
be resolved. In the U.S the gender wage gap is lower than it is in any country although there has not
being improvements since the 1990s. However, the contribution of men to household and childcare
has grown significantly in recent years, it is still far below women s contributions.

Dr. King s Letter From Birmingham Jail
Dr. King Lays the Clergymen s Anxiety to Rest
Dr. Martin Luther King addressed many topics in, Letter from Birmingham Jail . He answered all the
issues that were aimed towards him in a very skillful and well thought out manner. These issues came
from, A Call For Unity , which was a letter that was published by eight local clergymen expressing
their feelings about what Dr. King was doing. One concern in particular that King did an outstanding
job of confronting was that of the clergymen s anxiety about him breaking the law. King addresses the
question of, How can you advocate breaking some laws and obeying others? by clarifying that there
are just and unjust laws. He also goes on to explain the difference between the two, the effect of unjust
laws on the people that they are aimed towards, as well as examples of such laws. Furthermore, he
explains why they should be broken and gives examples of when they ve been broken in the past with
the usage of civil disobedience. First, Dr. King clears up any idea that he s just someone who has
broken the law for no reason. He does this by saying; I would be the first to advocate obeying just
laws. One has not only a legal but a moral responsibility to obey just laws. Conversely, one has a
moral responsibility to disobey unjust laws. (Para 15) This statement tells us that Dr. King is simply
adhering to his moral responsibility by doing as he s supposed to. He knows that following a law that
is not fair makes no sense, and it

How Did Mr Keating Promote Creativity
In what ways did Mr. Keating promote creativity?
Similar to critical thinking, Mr. Keating promoted creativity in multiple ways. For example, for one
lesson he required students to write original poems for homework which were read aloud and helped
the students realize that they could be artists and free thinkers. Additionally, Mr. Keating demonstrated
creativity through his novel lesson plans. For example, instead of requiring the class to memorize
specific parts of a poem, Mr. Keating created a lesson where students recited poetry while kicking
around soccer balls or marching around in a line. Mr. Keating also demonstrated creativity in his
lessons by forcing his students to regard the lesson from different angles. For example, during one
particular lesson, Mr. Keating asked his students to stand on his desk to see the world ... Show more

Did Mr. Keating use task value to motivate students? How so? The way Mr. Keating consistently
supported his students in believing that there are direct or indirect benefits in performing a task
throughout his lessons demonstrates how Mr. Keating used task value to motivate his students
(Ormrod, 2015, p. 199). Many times throughout the film, Mr. Keating s students engaged in classroom
assignments that established motivation through attainment value, intrinsic value, and utility value.
For example, when Mr. Keating forced his students to tear out the first page of the poetry book during
one of his first lessons, his students were engaging in intrinsic value as motivation because they were
experiencing enjoyment as well as curiosity from the task. The students enjoyed having the
opportunity to rip out pages from their books, and that act made them more interested in the task of

Resistance Training And Its Effect On Resting Metabolic Rate
The incidence of obesity has increased over the past several decades. In the United States, 68% of
adults are either overweight or obese, and 33% of the population is obese (Miller et al., 2012). Obesity
is associated with comorbidities such as hypertension, type I and II diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular
disease, and a variety of musculoskeletal disorders. The incidence of obesity and its comorbidities can
be prevented and modified with the identification of certain risk factors such as low levels of physical
activity and decreased energy expenditure that predispose an individual to obesity. The following
research addresses resting metabolic rate (RMR), its effects on caloric balance, and the effects of

The thermic effect of food is the energy expenditure associated with food digestion and absorption,
accounting for 10% of total energy expenditure. Activity thermogenesis is the energy expenditure
during activity and contributes to 15 30% of total energy expenditure (Levine, 2005). The component
of total energy expenditure that an individual can alter the most is activity thermogenesis by
increasing ones physical activity levels, allowing for a greater total of large muscle movements
(Akbulut Rakicioglu, 2011). For activity to occur, the body must supply the muscles with adenosine
triphosphate, ATP, which is a form of energy that allows processes such as muscle contraction to
occur. Calorie expenditure is needed to produce ATP. Energy expenditure during exercise is increased
by lengthening the duration and increasing the intensity of exercise (Levine, 2005). The third
component of total energy expenditure is BMR. BMR is an individual s energy expenditure at
complete rest and typically is measured directly after an individual wakes up in the morning. BMR
accounts for approximately 60% 75% of total energy expenditure (Visser, Duerenberg, Staveren,

Traditional Education vs. Online Education
Nowadays, education is becoming one of the fundamental things in a human lifetime; most people are
trying to achieve a higher education. As technology develops considerably, it has bearings on every
area of our life, even in the way of education. The development of technology has a large impact on
education. Before this progression of technology, the education system was only traditional. Currently,
the education system has been changed. The development of technology has allowed the education
system online along with traditionally. Traditional and online instructions are both great ways to learn.
While both types of instructions have the same purpose of educating students having good skills about
everything, but there are some significant differences between them such as flexibility, learning the
course content, communication, and the cost.
The first distinction between traditional education and online education is flexibility. The motivation
of flexible learning is offering students choices about when, where and how they learn. It assists
students to acquire skills and characteristics to adapt successfully to shift. Traditional education
requires a particular place or environment for learning and instruction. It limits the number of students
that can study at the same time and it would depend on the size of class and education institution.
Moreover, traditional

Generally speaking, the limit is above 200ms, below that duration, loudness is affected by sound s
length. (5)
Direction
The directional perception of sounds in the space is made possible thanks to a subconscious
comparison of the nerve signals coming from both ears (Binaural Effect).
The four factors determining such phenomenon are delay time and intensity difference of the signals
perceived by each ear, together with phase and timbre.
To get into more detail, the delay time, or time of arrival, for each ear, is different whether the sound
source is in front of the listener (0ms of delay between the ears) or next to him or her (up to 0.6 ms),
while the intensity of the signal reaching the closer ear is obviously higher.(6)
The signal perceived by each ear also has a different phase, but only if its bandwidth is greater than
the distance between the ears, I.e. below 500 Hz.
Finally, the timbre is also important, as the signal will lose high frequencies while reaching the
farthest ear.
10
Environment and reflections
Among the others, the Haas effect also plays an important role in our perception of sound.
Named after the experimenter who quantified this behaviour of our ears, it s now proved that the ear
attends to the direction of the sound that arrives first and does not

The Role of Women in Homer’s Iliad Essay
The Role of Women in Homer s Iliad
Homer s Iliad is undoubtedly focused on its male characters: Achilles, primarily, but also Hector and
Agamemnon. Nevertheless, it seems that the most crucial characters in the epic are female. Homer
uses the characters of Thetis, Andromache, and Helen as a basis for comparison to the male characters.
Homer wants his audience to see and understand the folly of his male characters in choosing war over
peace, aggression over kindness, and honor over family. While the behavior of these characters clearly
speaks for itself, the contrasting attitudes and behaviors of the female characters proffer an alternative;
in comparison, the reader can hardly fail to concur with Homer s message that war, aggression, ...

Thetis is always motivated by her love and pity for her son, two emotions he seems unable to feel
himself. As a loving mother, she is concerned for her son and his future and so ensures that he is aware
of his options. Out of respect for him, she allows Achilles to make his own decision and goes as far as
to support him fully, although the attentive reader can sense that doing so is immensely painful for her.
Therefore, although it superficially seems that Thetis supports war and aggression, her true motives
are far more admirable.
Unlike Thetis, Andromache s values are clear. On the rampart in book six, she makes an impassioned
plea to Hector for reason and peace. Pity me, please! she says, Take your stand on the rampart here,
before you orphan your son and make your wife a widow. (ll. 230 231) When her fears are realized
and Hector is struck down by Achilles, she laments, Hector, what help are you to [Astyanax], now you
are dead? (l. 571) This single statement lays bare the true folly of pride: How can one justify the
preservation of honor at the cost of the destruction of all that one fought for in the first place?
Finally, there is great irony in the lamentations of both Helen and Briseis for Hector and Patroclus
respectively. Helen proclaims her respect for Hector s kindness: Hector, you d win them to my side . . .
you with your gentle temper, all your gentle

Diverse Mating Strategies Among Different Species
Diverse Mating Strategies Among Different Dolphin Species
There are a variety of different mating strategies among different male dolphins species. Male mating
strategies and forms of competitive interaction among male cetaceans lead to the development of
sexually dimorphic features such as prominent postanal humps, reproductive adaptation such as large
testis size, and retained bodily scarring caused by interactions with conspecifics. (Murphy, 2005)
Cetacean have been noted to either have a polygynous or polygynandrous mating system. (Murphy,
2005) These mating systems have led to a number of different types of competition among males such
as contest competition (where males limit the access of other males to females by aggressive displays
or fights) scramble competition (competition to disperse and find sexually receptive females),
endurance rivalry competition (competition to remain sexually active over a longer period of time),
mate choice competition (competition in courtship), and sperm competition (competition between the
sperm of 2 or more males). (Murphy, 2005) Individual males will use these different strategies
depending on their dominance in rank, size, age , and number and quality of reproductive females.
(Murphy, 2005) Contest competition and courtship competition have been documented in polygynous
species such as bottlenose dolphin (tursiops truncates), and humpback whales.( Murphy, 2005) Sexual

Evaluating A Blue Ocean Strategy A Buyer Utility Map
According to Kim and Mauborgne (2005), when formulating a blue ocean strategy a buyer utility map
can help managers obtain the proper perspective of their product or service s utility to its buyers (p.
121). The utility map can help managers at ExxonMobil understand the value of their product
throughout the buyer experience cycle. The utility levers reflect the many ways that motor oil can
have a negative or positive impact. In addition, understanding how to increase motor oil s value can
help the company identify the biggest blocks to buyer utility. The greatest blocks to customer utility
often represent the best opportunities to create exceptional value (Kim Mauborgne, 2005, p. 122). For
example, if ExxonMobil can formulate a better, more environmentally safe blend of motor oil, it will
create an exceptional value for the customer (figure 1.3 below). Currently, there are very few motor oil
manufacturers that create environmentally safe versions. Though the company is one of the world s
largest publically traded oil and gas company, creating such a value will keep them ahead of the
competition as well as creating a larger market share ( 2014 Summary , 2014).
Synopsis on Blocks to Customer Utility Today s customers demand a lot more from the utility of any
product or service they are interested in purchasing. Customers expect quality products and services,
competitive pricing and certain level of control over their transactions and their provider to engage

In most people s lives, there comes a point in time where their perception changes abruptly; a single
moment in their life when they come to a sudden realization. In Langston Hughes Salvation , contrary
to all expectations, a young Hughes is not saved by Jesus, but is saved from his own innocence.
Salvation is the story of a young boy who has an experience of revelation. While attending a church
revival, he comes to the sudden realization that Jesus will not physically come save him.

almost impossible not to feel the warmth contained in the ?hot, crowded church? (181). In short, the
technique used by Hughes is set to put the reader in the same ambiance the young boy is in, thus
giving us a closer look at his innocence.
The innocence shown by the young boy at the beginning of the story can be attributed to many factors,
the main reason being his Auntie Reed. She goes on talking for days about the big revival. Just like
any other kid would, Hughes listens and believes word for word what his aunt tells him: ?She said you
could see and hear and feel Jesus in your soul.? (181) This naivete is characteristic of youths of that
age group. After all, he ?heard a great many old people say the same thing? (181) and it seemed to him
?they ought to know? (181). With all the hype and anticipation surrounding this event, Hughes is
certain something is bound to happen. His disappointment is manifested when he does not literally see
Jesus. From what he has been told, Hughes is expecting to see a human incarnation of Jesus. He is
actually more than just expecting to see him; he badly wants to be saved! Seeing Westley give up so
carelessly, triggers an awkward feeling inside of Hughes. The thought that Jesus is not going to show
up after all is starting to grow. That leads him to eventually give up and join Westley in lying. It is
only at night that he comes

Positive And Negative Effects Of Thermoregulation
Thermoregulation is the control of the body s temperature. Normal body core temperature is typically
around 37 °C, staying within a functional range of 35 to 41 °C. (Périard et al., 2015) Temperature
during exercise can have both positive and negative effects and therefore it is important to manage it
through training and heat acclimatisation. It has been found that power output and speed of cyclists
decreased during hot conditions. (Racinais, S et al., 2015) However, due to heat acclimatisation the
decrements were progressively increased, therefore suggesting that heat acclimatisation can be used
successfully. (Périard et al., 2015). Similarly, it can be found that exercise increases body temperature
and the resulting heat stored becomes a factor inhibiting exercise performance. Loss of heat by
evaporation can eventually hinder performance. Therefore, it is again found that acclimatization
improves performance by affecting heat loss mechanisms. (Reilly et al, 2006). A study was carried out
by Webborn et al., (2005) to test weather precooling/cooling in intermittent sprint exercises in a hot
environment would reduce a rise in core temperature. 8 male participants took part in 4 heat stress
trials with the independent variables being no cooling control, 20 min of precooling and cooling
during exercise. Each participant took a pill measuring core body temperature and the results found

incredible way. The soundtrack was beautiful and flattered the movie while incorporating the books
themes and imagery. Interviews were later given to discuss the filmmaking and production of the
soundtrack, which gave background to the reasoning behind the music. Along with this were critical
reviews as well. In a review by Brendan Dempsey the soundtrack and specifically the song No Church
in the Wild was analyzed. In an explanation behind some of the lines Dempsey begins to say, Rolling
in a Rolls Royce Corniche: Gatsby s yellow Rolls convertible is a key symbol in the story. (Dempsey)
This obvious connection between the song lyrics and the novel is undeniable. Cocaine seats/All white
like I got the whole thing bleached/Drug dealer chic (Jay Z, Kanye West) The drug references and
involvement in drug dealing is relative to Gatsby s past. He goes to say in the novel Oh, I ve been in
several things, he corrected himself. I was in the drug business and then I was in the oil business. But I
m not in either one now. It is easy to see that Jay Z and Kanye West wrote this song based off the
descriptions from the novel. (Fitzgerald) Another line from the song that concerns the characters in the
novel is I live by you, desire/I stand by you, walk through the fire/Your love, is my scripture This
shows the relationship between Gatsby and Daisy. We are sure of this relationship in the novel because
of descriptions such as the following:
It was a strange coincidence, I said.
But it wasn t a coincidence at all.
Why not?
Gatsby bought that house so that Daisy would be just across the bay.
Then it had not been just the stars to which he had aspired on that June night. He came alive to me,
delivered suddenly from the womb of his purposeless splendor.
He wants to know, continued Jordan, if you ll invite Daisy to your

Essay about A New York Times Review of “Paid in Full”
A New York Times Review of Paid in Full
Hello my readers, I know you must have been surprised when you saw this review on the listing of our
website, movies.nytimes.com. But only six and a half years ago a movie came out which did not
generate outstanding revenue in the box office, being released domestically and only earring
$3,090,862. I assume those of you who did see the movie in 2002 have probably forgotten about it by
now, and I was not working for the New York Times, so I would like to revisit this film. It is an
interpretation of a true story of three young men in Harlem, New York during the 1980s and their rise
and fall in the drug dealing business. The actor who plays Mitch in the film (who portrays the true
story of Alberto ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Because directors like him who have experience dealing with portraying realistic human interactions
would certainly do well turning a true story into a full length feature film. Mr. Stone had the task of
presenting realistic interactions of characters and depiction of the drug craze in the New York City
area during the 1980s. The overall representation of the life in New York City was certainly not
amateur, Mt. Stone s experience in the area of human interactions shown through in every part of the
movie. But let me say that the movie was of course not perfect. The main character of Paid in Full,
Ace (Wood Harris), also the narrator of the film, is a reserved young man who find of a small portion
of cocaine leads him into the life of a drug dealer. He decided to quit his quiet, yet community
orientated job delivering dry cleaning around town to sell drugs in place of his ego filled best friend,
Mitch (Mekhi Phifer), when Mitch gets sentenced to prison. When Ace was around Mitch all he saw
were the riches and notoriety that came to Mitch because of his occupation as a drug dealer. The
decision to become a drug dealer was an easy choice for Ace especially when he found a source of
cocaine to sell. Ace begins to fall head over heels into the life of a drug dealer, when the money begins
to flow in at a higher and stronger rate. It takes all of his effort not to allow himself to be lost in the
tangle of conflicts, which in the end

Ryanite Secret Societies
Horst continued, This was deemed imperative by the RGA leadership, because out of the major
powers involved in this so called Brotzmanskrieg, only the Union or the Coven refused to take any
part. Those mercs in the Brotherhood of the Untainted Garden are a different story, because they
literally have no idea as to how to understand what is coming out of my mouth. But getting back to the
Union, they refused to sign this compromise, because they felt that it was their first and last chance to
gain power for themselves, and surpass the RGA and the Underground in terms of might and prestige.
Then again, I must say... Sheer hubris can drive some people nutso, if I may add, the Godmother said,

After all, the Old Plaid Guard was not the only ones who were working tirelessly toward the idea. The
Dark Ryanite Valkyries were eager to play their own roles in the events leading up to the rebirth. Not
just they and the Old Plaid Guard, but pretty much everyone and anyone who would later become the
allies of the RGA. From the Coalition to the three Ryanite secret societies, the RGA s allies were
assisting them, with both the Wise Man and the Godmother taking the helm of leading the Catholic
School Conservationist movement. By their will and perseverance, they brought a declining institution

Research Paper On Siberian Tigers
The Siberian Tiger
Have you ever heard of a siberian tiger? Many people say that they are scary creatures that can eat
you, but that s not the case. If you come close to them they might think you are trying to take over
their territory, or if it is a female with babies it might think that you are trying to take away their
children. Siberian tigers want to live happy lives like any average human would. Walking into a tiger s
territory is like a random stranger walking in your house and staring at you, continued by taking
pictures then leaving like nothing ever happened. Would you want that? Siberian tigers are endangered
and we need to help them before they become extinct.
Before I explain the reasons why these precious animals

Why I Want To Pursue A Career In The Music Industry
Even though my current job is in the field of customer service and not broadcasting or music
production, it still involves communication. I currently utilize this skill at ACE when I interact with
customers and will do the same at an audio production position when I give advice to vocalists and
musicians. In the future, I can communicate effectively when I discuss my career plans with
counselors at school as well as conduct informational interviews with those who work in the recording
arts industry. I intend to achieve my career goals by using these strategies as well. In one to two years,
I see myself working in the music and broadcasting industries as a freelancer, intern, or full time
employee. In five to ten years, I imagine myself employed at a recording studio in my hometown or
San Francisco or Los Angeles, which in my opinion is the entertainment capital of the world.
Hopefully, by this time, I will have completed my Bachelor s degree and already gained experience in
my desired career industries as well as conducted countless informational interviews. Additionally, my
SoundCloud portfolio will contain over a few hundred instrumentals that I produced. I want to take all
the necessary steps towards becoming a top notch music producer. There are several varying positions
in the music industry that can seek besides a music producer. According to CareersInMusic.com,
which lists both careers in the industry, the list of jobs includes, but is not limited to, audio engineers,

Who Is The Lion King
The Lion king starts in the lands of Africa, where the Lion Mufasa rules as king over other animals.
King Mufasa and Queen Sarabi give birth to Simba but Mufasa s brother Scar is displeased by it
because Simba would replace him as the heir to the throne. Time passes and Mufasa finally takes
young Simba on a tour where he teaches Simba to be a King and the circle of life. Then, Scar tricks
Simba and his friend Nala to explore a graveyard which Mufasa has forbidden them to go. Some
hyenas spot Simba and try to attack but Mufasa gets there on time and rescues them. Scar and hyenas
plot to kill Mufasa. Scar lures Simba to a gorge. Scar creates a stampede of the wildebeests and
Mufasa has to rescue Simba again. But this time while Mufasa was trying ... Show more content on

The movie has parts that resembles a monarchy and victimization. Lion king is depicted as a story of a
contemporary America. Mufasa represented ideal of the free, tolerant, compassionate society that had
been evolving in this country. Scar on the other hand, doesn t care about his social image. He is greedy
and only cares about the rich. Scar and the hyenas can be considered as rapacious politicians in
Washington. Or he can also be presented as leading the hyenas on a Nazi like military march. When
Mufasa explains Simba why them eating the antelopes is fine can be depicted as the hierarchical
capitalist system. The lower classes are the grass that support the antelopes of the middle class. The
upper class happily feed on the middle class while the lower class scavenge off the scraps of decaying
waste and leftovers produced by the lions. Scar convincing Simba that he was responsible for Mufasa
s death is similar to people believing that its their own fault that discrimination, cultural and
educational deprivation occur. Simba leaves his kingdom and feels purposeless until he meets Timon
and Pumbaa who believe in Hedonism (maximizing pleasure). On the other hand, Scar becomes a
dictator of the kingdom with his hyenas. Their greediness results in the kingdom becoming a bleak
area. Faith is personified by Rafiki. He brings the rightful king back and restores the Circle of Life.
The Lions can be presented as racists because when Scar brings back the hyenas to the kingdom, the
shock on the lions faces displayed their racism. Which was no different to ours before the Civil War.
The Circle of Life resumes when Simba returns to his rightful place. After few years, Simba has a cub
of his own. The middle class animals bow to their royalty, knowing that their hierarchical lifestyle will
never cease to be the dominant social structure in the

  • 2. The Grand Scheme of the New Imperialism Since it became a necessity in the 19th and 20th century to rule over other nations for economic and political prosperity, the Europeans did the same for the sake of the mother country, which greatly influenced the respective aspects. The European or the new Imperialism is a movement, which brought the worldwide effect of white supremacy. As far as the ideas of historians are concerned, new Imperialism was the product of economic rationale. It is obvious that every nation looks forward to uplift their economic status. Although the new Imperialism was a product of economic rational, it was largely justified for social and political reasons such as civilizing missions to help these countries out. While social effects helped to cause the new Imperialism, it was the economic advantages that forced the major plays of Europe into the grand scheme of the new Imperialism. The new Imperialism started by launching a new era of expansionism, they conquered territory by colonizing nations where it was easy to gain material wealth. . The imperial countries by the economic and technological powers tried to restructure the reliant nations and regions that could supply them with the raw materials and food products . This was primarily done in Africa and Asia on the basis of colonial invasion. The European nations viewed Africa and Asia as a means to materials such as coal, iron and copper. UPS.com states that the current strategy is Create Value, Transform, and Invest to Grow . This is a major reason that UPS currently has the competitive advantage over other shipping companies. It is also the reason that the company strives to become better at what they do every day. The Company currently known as United Parcel Service, founded in 1907 by Claud Ryan and Jim Causey two teenagers with a big idea and not much money. They started the venture by running errands, carrying notes, and local deliveries by foot. As time passed and technology grew the company evolved into delivering packages. Very quickly Merchants Parcel Delivery built a strong reputation based on customer service and the care that they gave to each package. In 1919, they became United Parcel Service , and started domestic expansion. By the 1920s UPS was changing in response to their external environment. They soon started offering unique features such as daily pickups. During the time leading up to World War II, the United States suffered a major fuel shortage. • 4. Recommendations And Improvements Of The Fishbone Diagram PROCESS RECOMMENDATIONS AND IMPROVEMENTS After defining our standards, measuring the data, and analyzing the information it was time to improve the products and processes. This was done by assessing the manpower, materials, methods, meals, and machines related to the process. The tools used in the analysis were the fishbone and the process flow diagrams shown below. Some concepts on the fishbone diagram are related to the product directly while others are related to the delivery process, the staff and the physical appearance of the restaurant. However, all of the factors relate directly to the customer satisfaction and an enjoyable dining experience. A detailed description of these aspects will now be discussed, along with how to implement these changes. There are many possibilities for how the materials could be improved. First, tables and chairs should be maintained at higher standards. This could be improved by setting time limits on clearing and resetting tables. For example, tables must be cleaned no longer than two minutes after the customers leave the table . Second, restrooms should be maintained on routine schedules. For example, staff should inspect restrooms every 30 minutes and sign posted inspection sheets verifying that they were sanitized and restocked. Furthermore, changing tables, hand sanitizers and baby wipes should be available in all restrooms. Even the music in the restrooms was an added bonus. Third, cloth napkins and finer utensils ... Despite the fact that the both holidays ring in the new year and we get a break from school, Rosh Hashanah holds a different and deeper meaning. On the surface both holidays seem to be the same: there are resolutions, there are celebrations taking place, and we bustle around to prepare for coming holidays. However, when you take a closer look you can see that these are only shallow similarities. Both on New Years and on Rosh Hashana we make resolutions, promising to begin to better ourselves. However on New Years our resolutions are for us. We make promises to ourselves. When we make resolutions they not only involve but a second party as well. They also involve hashem. We promise to try and keep his mitzvot better. The promises we make on rosh hashanah are not only for us but also for Hashem. On New Years the promises we make are for us. Finally, the ... Or perhaps we are sending a text or making a phone call to any and everyone we know, asking for their forgiveness. We are pushing ourselves to be ready, making ourselves the best we can, giving Hashem reasons to inscribe our name in the Book of Life. This is something you can find every Jew doing on the eve of Rosh Hashanah. However, when it comes to dealing with the secular New Year, things are quite different. Firstly, the hustle and bustle of getting ready for a party is not required, some people opt to stay at home and watch the ball drop on their TV. Secondly, there is no asking friends and family and teachers and classmates to forgiveness. We do not worry about Hashem judging us, and there is no anxiety about being written in the book of ... • 6. Timken Executive Summary From our DCF calculations, the value of Torrington as a stand alone entity is $1.181 billion. However, the maximum purchase price for Torrington should only be $641 million. The optimum debt amount for this transaction would be $301 million. This amount of debt would result in a total debt to capital ratio for Torrington of 47%, within the range for a BBB investment grade debt rating. The combined entities, Torrington Timken, would produce an interest coverage ratio of 3.2, and a debt ratio of 45%, again within the range for a BBB debt rating. The purchase would likely be a cash transaction. History Founded by carriage maker Henry Timken in 1899 in St. Louis, Missouri, the Timken Company was ... Using the average of the revised sample field for each ratio, we inserted Torrington s values where appropriate to generate an entity value. The findings generated two values for Torrington, 606 million and 398 million. Taking the average of these two numbers, Torrington exhibited a relative value of 502.41 million. Because of the lack of related information given in the case, and the often large differences in measures amongst competitors, different capital structures, internal management strategies, there remained many unknowns in our model. We decided it would be best to use this valuation to reaffirm our assumptions in our DCF valuation. (Please see exhibits) DCF Model Based on information given, we established the free cash flows from operations for Torrington, for the period 1999 to 2007. We made the assumption that net working capital was 7% of sales for Torrington, based on historic patterns. From this assumption, we found Change in Net Working Capital for the selected years. An in depth look at what is developmental trauma and the aetiology of dissociation will be covered. Using clinical examples, the implications for clinical practice in child psychotherapy will be considered. There is not scope here to look at each dissociative phenomena in great depth so this project will concentrate on dissociation as a whole. • 11. The Great Train Robbery And Edwin Porter In this essay I will be discussing five key points throughout Post Production history between the 1900s 1960s. Post Production is seen as a vital component in the cinematic industry as it essentially finalises the final products. Techniques that have been developed over the years are incredibly important, but they all have an origin. Although these techniques started out without overwhelming effect, they are now unbelievably crucial to how films are constructed. The five points I wish to discuss go as follows: The Great Train Robbery and Edwin Porter himself, D.W. Griffith and his overwhelming influence on editing, The Jazz Singer, the Kuleshov Effect and finally, 2001: A Space Odyssey. As well as discussing these key factors, this essay will take into consideration secondary material. In the early years of post production, there was a distinct lack of editing within the film industry. Everything filmed was for the most part one continuous shot and lacking too much creativity in the post production region. Edwin Porter was one of the key founders that changed the way post production was addressed. Although he originally filmed following what is referred to as Aristotelian construction (Musser, 1991, p167) he began paying closer attention to how a story could be told more effectively through visual representation. Edwin began straying away from Aristotelian construction and instead opted to use cutting to help him create the story he wished to create. Whilst this was not an ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Leslie asks the schoolchildren to imagine what it must have been like to be raised in an Indian residential school, stating that the children are the next generation who will walk forward with values and ideals that will change our world and make it a better place (Project Heart). The adults who participated in the ceremony (in addition to those who view it through film) must also face the same question, as well as face their individual and collective values as demonstrated by their response to her poignant inquiry. That is to say, if adults see children acting according to a certain ethical standard, the adults are also likely to choose to follow with their own ethical actions. Finally, Simmons discusses what she names I know what you are thinking stories, in which the storyteller attempts to name the audience s objections as a way of disarming any potential resistance to influence (23 26). The Economic Growth of Japan Japan may have restored sovereignty to the Emperor and updated its Feudal government to a modern system, but its economy could not reach its potential unless Japan compensated for its need of resources such as oil, rubber, and metals (Columbia University). The Empire of Japan, as it was called from the Meiji Restoration until post World War Two invaded a series of countries from the late 1800 s to the 1940 s. These include the Sino Japanese War (1895), Russo Japanese War (1905) both over Korean domination, Manchuria (1931), China (1937), and French Indochina (1940) (Columbia University). The government was still militaristic and expansion for economic gain was the direction Japan chose (Japan Guide). This is seen through the risks Japan took to get the benefits of the invasions, such as Korea and its raw materials, and the supplies of Manchuria, China, and French Indochina. Lastly, Japan wanted to go after British and Dutch colonies to help secure their defense. The only thing standing in the way of taking these territories was the American Navy (Columbia University). Now Japan has to gamble. However, Japan has won wars against both Russia and China from a few decades before. A third significant impact the decrease in sea ice in the Arctic will have on Norway is increasing marine access to oil, gas and other mineral sources (ACIA 114). As a student of how weather and climate affect society and climate change, it would seem that an increase in access to oil and mineral sources could have a detrimental effect on any progress in reducing carbon emissions. Taking a Look at Free Trade Free trade is something that WTO encourages globally and insists that no government interference should take place in international trade and that this will be followed by specialisation and an increase in countries welfare. Countries however want a competitive advantage and to obtain this interference takes place in the form of restrictions. Most highly competitive countries are well off economically, has respectable infrastructure, high levels of education and technology, steady political and social status and strong international positioning. Restrictions are set in motion for several reasons, all of them follow. First we distinguish between tariff barrier restrictions and non tariff barrier restrictions. Tariffs are imposed on either exports or imports and include a payment, like taxes that the government imposes on goods that leaves or enters the country. Import tariffs are more common than export tariffs. Ad valorum is a type of tariff which entails that you pay a fixed % on goods. For example, if you import R1200 of merchandise, and the ad valorum is set at 12%, you have to pay R144 duties on the goods. Another tariff is a specific rate tariff which means a specific amount for each unit is expected to be paid. One concern in particular that King did an outstanding job of confronting was that of the clergymen s anxiety about him breaking the law. First, Dr. King clears up any idea that he s just someone who has broken the law for no reason. He does this by saying; I would be the first to advocate obeying just laws. • 29. Resistance Training And Its Effect On Resting Metabolic Rate The incidence of obesity has increased over the past several decades. In the United States, 68% of adults are either overweight or obese, and 33% of the population is obese (Miller et al., 2012). Obesity is associated with comorbidities such as hypertension, type I and II diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease, and a variety of musculoskeletal disorders. The incidence of obesity and its comorbidities can be prevented and modified with the identification of certain risk factors such as low levels of physical activity and decreased energy expenditure that predispose an individual to obesity. The thermic effect of food is the energy expenditure associated with food digestion and absorption, accounting for 10% of total energy expenditure. Activity thermogenesis is the energy expenditure during activity and contributes to 15 30% of total energy expenditure (Levine, 2005). The component of total energy expenditure that an individual can alter the most is activity thermogenesis by increasing ones physical activity levels, allowing for a greater total of large muscle movements (Akbulut Rakicioglu, 2011). For activity to occur, the body must supply the muscles with adenosine triphosphate, ATP, which is a form of energy that allows processes such as muscle contraction to occur. Calorie expenditure is needed to produce ATP. Energy expenditure during exercise is increased by lengthening the duration and increasing the intensity of exercise (Levine, 2005). The third component of total energy expenditure is BMR. BMR is an individual s energy expenditure at complete rest and typically is measured directly after an individual wakes up in the morning. BMR accounts for approximately 60% 75% of total energy expenditure (Visser, Duerenberg, Staveren, Hautvast, 1995). Resting and basal metabolic rate are similar and often are used interchangeably. (5) Direction The directional perception of sounds in the space is made possible thanks to a subconscious comparison of the nerve signals coming from both ears (Binaural Effect). The four factors determining such phenomenon are delay time and intensity difference of the signals perceived by each ear, together with phase and timbre. To get into more detail, the delay time, or time of arrival, for each ear, is different whether the sound source is in front of the listener (0ms of delay between the ears) or next to him or her (up to 0.6 ms), while the intensity of the signal reaching the closer ear is obviously higher.(6) The signal perceived by each ear also has a different phase, but only if its bandwidth is greater than the distance between the ears, I.e. below 500 Hz. Finally, the timbre is also important, as the signal will lose high frequencies while reaching the farthest ear. 10

  • 33. The Role of Women in Homer’s Iliad Essay The Role of Women in Homer s Iliad Homer s Iliad is undoubtedly focused on its male characters: Achilles, primarily, but also Hector and Agamemnon. Nevertheless, it seems that the most crucial characters in the epic are female. Homer uses the characters of Thetis, Andromache, and Helen as a basis for comparison to the male characters. Homer wants his audience to see and understand the folly of his male characters in choosing war over peace, aggression over kindness, and honor over family. While the behavior of these characters clearly speaks for itself, the contrasting attitudes and behaviors of the female characters proffer an alternative; in comparison, the reader can hardly fail to concur with Homer s message that war, aggression, ... Out of respect for him, she allows Achilles to make his own decision and goes as far as to support him fully, although the attentive reader can sense that doing so is immensely painful for her. Therefore, although it superficially seems that Thetis supports war and aggression, her true motives are far more admirable. Unlike Thetis, Andromache s values are clear. On the rampart in book six, she makes an impassioned plea to Hector for reason and peace. Pity me, please! she says, Take your stand on the rampart here, before you orphan your son and make your wife a widow. The utility map can help managers at ExxonMobil understand the value of their product throughout the buyer experience cycle. The utility levers reflect the many ways that motor oil can have a negative or positive impact. In addition, understanding how to increase motor oil s value can help the company identify the biggest blocks to buyer utility. The greatest blocks to customer utility often represent the best opportunities to create exceptional value (Kim Mauborgne, 2005, p. 122). For example, if ExxonMobil can formulate a better, more environmentally safe blend of motor oil, it will create an exceptional value for the customer (figure 1.3 below). Currently, there are very few motor oil manufacturers that create environmentally safe versions. Though the company is one of the world s largest publically traded oil and gas company, creating such a value will keep them ahead of the competition as well as creating a larger market share ( 2014 Summary , 2014). Normal body core temperature is typically around 37 °C, staying within a functional range of 35 to 41 °C. (Périard et al., 2015) Temperature during exercise can have both positive and negative effects and therefore it is important to manage it through training and heat acclimatisation. It has been found that power output and speed of cyclists decreased during hot conditions. (Racinais, S et al., 2015) However, due to heat acclimatisation the decrements were progressively increased, therefore suggesting that heat acclimatisation can be used successfully. (Périard et al., 2015). Similarly, it can be found that exercise increases body temperature and the resulting heat stored becomes a factor inhibiting exercise performance. Loss of heat by evaporation can eventually hinder performance. Therefore, it is again found that acclimatization improves performance by affecting heat loss mechanisms. (Reilly et al, 2006). A study was carried out by Webborn et al., (2005) to test weather precooling/cooling in intermittent sprint exercises in a hot environment would reduce a rise in core temperature. 8 male participants took part in 4 heat stress trials with the independent variables being no cooling control, 20 min of precooling and cooling during exercise. The artists were specially chosen by the producer Anton Monsted to compliment the novel. The artists integrated the intense emotional feelings described in the book as well as direct quotations into their songs. This helps the music better fit the novel. It also blends genres such as today s hip hop and 1920 s Jazz in an incredible way. The soundtrack was beautiful and flattered the movie while incorporating the books themes and imagery. Interviews were later given to discuss the filmmaking and production of the soundtrack, which gave background to the reasoning behind the music. Along with this were critical reviews as well. In a review by Brendan Dempsey the soundtrack and specifically the song No Church in the Wild was analyzed. In an explanation behind some of the lines Dempsey begins to say, Rolling in a Rolls Royce Corniche: Gatsby s yellow Rolls convertible is a key symbol in the story. (Dempsey) This obvious connection between the song lyrics and the novel is undeniable. Cocaine seats/All white like I got the whole thing bleached/Drug dealer chic (Jay Z, Kanye West) The drug references and involvement in drug dealing is relative to Gatsby s past. He goes to say in the novel Oh, I ve been in several things, he corrected himself. I was in the drug business and then I was in the oil business. But I m not in either one now. It is easy to see that Jay Z and Kanye West wrote this song based off the descriptions from the novel. (Fitzgerald) Another line from the song that concerns the characters in the novel is I live by you, desire/I stand by you, walk through the fire/Your love, is my scripture This shows the relationship between Gatsby and Daisy. We are sure of this relationship in the novel because of descriptions such as the following: It was a strange coincidence, I said. But it wasn t a coincidence at all. Why not? Gatsby bought that house so that Daisy would be just across the bay. Then it had not been just the stars to which he had aspired on that June night.
