This document summarizes a study that examined the connection between how interviewers frame questions and the level of detail in participants' responses. The study analyzed 52 interviews to code for variation in question presentation and response detail. It found that asking questions with slight variation or an expanded frame, rather than word-for-word, was associated with longer, more detailed responses. It provided recommendations for training interviewers to obtain richer qualitative data, such as focusing on question framing and types of follow-up probes. Future research should replicate this study with larger samples and examine responses in relation to specific questions and race matching between interviewers and participants.
