Standard Session Equipment
Net - Use coats or tall cones lined up to form a raised barrier
Gates - Place two cones roughly 1-2 steps apart
Floor Target - Use spots or cones to create a marked area to aim at
Hanging Target - Use string or tape to secure a spot or tie a bottle high up
Goal - Using tall cones or bucket create a goal with depth and height
Hoop – Use a bucket or ask a child to hold their arms in a hoop shape
Stumps - Place tall cones together or use a racquet or bat on its own

ACTIVITIES VOCABLARY
Throwing Focus eyes on target, hold ball with fingers, one leg forward (opposite to throwing arm)
Kicking Keep eyes on ball, step forward with non kicking foot, swing kicking foot through.
Catching Big hands out ready to catch, watch the ball, reach for the ball and squeeze it tight
Dribbling Bounce catch, bounce catch
Bouncing Pat the ball with our finger tips
Striking Shake hands with racket or bat,, keep your eyes on the ball, swing through to hit the ball.
6. Fundamental Movement Skill:
Throwing
Progression 1:
Make the target move (e.g. swinging)
Progression 2:
Use partner to add a blocker in front of the
target
Practice:
Hang a target above the
children’s head height.
Using bean bags children
try to hit the target, they
can work in pairs or
individually. Take a step
back each time they hit
it.
Week 1
Key Points:
• Use non-throwing arm to
aim.
• Opposite leg to throwing
arm forward.
• Point throwing hand
towards target after throw.
• Step back leg through after
throw.
7. Fundamental Movement Skill:
Kicking
Progression 1:
Make the gates smaller
Progression 2:
Add a small barrier in the gate to
encourage kicking over
Practice:
Children try to kick the
ball to each other in
pairs. Trying to kick
through a cone gate in
the middle. If they
score take a step back.
Set cone gate 1 meter
apart.
Week 2
Key Points:
• Make sure kicking leg
follows through the ball.
• Place standing leg next
to the ball.
• Place head over the ball
when making contact
with the ball.
8. Fundamental Movement Skill:
Catching
Progression 1:
Use over-arm throws only
Progression 2:
Catch and throw with 1 hand.
Practice:
Children throw bean bags
to each other over a net,
aim of the game is to not
let the beanbag touch the
ground. Count how many
catches made and take a
step back each successful
catch.
Week 3
Key Points:
• Watch ball into hands.
• Keep hands together
form a basket.
• Stay on balls of feet to
react quickly.
9. Fundamental Movement Skill:
Dribbling
Progression 1:
Dribble using feet
Progression 2:
Dribble while bouncing balls
Practice:
Every child with a
ball try to dribble
through as many
gates as possible in 2
mins. Set up 7-10
gates in small area
using cones.
Week 4
Key Points:
• Keep ball close to body,
slightly in front.
• Use small touches to
keep ball close.
10. Fundamental Movement Skill:
Bouncing
Progression 1:
Ball may only bounce once before
the bucket
Progression 2:
Bounce balls using a racquet or bat
Practice:
Place large bucket/
box in middle of the
area as a goal.
Players try to
bounce balls into the
goal from where
they pick them up.
Week 5
Key Points:
• Make sure to throw from
high to low.
• Step into the bounce.
• Aim to bounce ball in front
between target and player.
11. Fundamental Movement Skill:
Striking
Progression 1:
Make target smaller and placed at the
end of the table
Progression 2:
Use multiple targets at various distances
different points for each
Practice:
Place a circular target
at the end of the area
on the floor. Children
try to hit balls/
beanbags into the area
using either racquets
or bats.
Week 6
Key Points:
• Head over/ in-line with
ball and front foot
• Follow through swing all
the way through
12. Fundamental Movement Skill:
Collecting
Progression 1:
Children must carry balls using a
different part of their body
Progression 2:
Both teams collect for their own bucket,
team with most balls wins
Practice:
Children split into 2
teams, team 1 aim to
collect and deposit balls
into a bucket while team
2 aim to pick up and
throw them away. Team
with most balls in bucket
at the end is the winner.
Week 7
Key Points:
• Pick up objects next to
dominant foot.
• Stay in a low position
when collecting and
depositing.
