7 Tips When
Writing Your
First CV
1. Look at other people’s CVs
Yes you heard right!
Looking at other people’s CVs
can give you some great ideas
for layout and content.
2. Layout
Make sure your CV is neat and consistent.
Don’t over write it!
Use Titles
- sub sections
and stick to the same font and size. Take
your time to set it out neatly!
3. Don’t drag on
Make sure you keep to the point!
Give information but keep it
short. Your CV should never
exceed two pages. Keep your
personal statement short and
sweet.
If there’s something that can be
missed, such as that time you
ate 20 ice creams in one day,
then leave it off.
4. Make sure it makes sense
Check your CV at least 5 times before you
think it’s ready. Check it’s spelt correctly and
makes grammatical sense.
5. Get others to check it
Give it to your parents, tutor, and teachers
and get as many opinions as you can;
they’ve done it before, so they’ll know a
thing or two.
6. Personal details
Make sure your email address is not inappropriate.
Create an email that is as close to your name as you
can possibly get it, and avoid email addresses that
sound unprofessional, such as ilovebeer@email.com
or crazyforcats@email.com
7. Let your personality shine
through
Employers filter through hundreds of CVs a year so
they really don’t want to see another boring CV.
Make yourself stand out with your personal
statement.
If you’re interested in a work placement, you must
already be studying on a full-time pathway in College to
give you on-the-job experience after you progress from
College.
