6. What have you learnt about
technology from the process of
constructing this product?
Analogue
 • Analogue - used before digital.
 • Signal is taken from a microphone and laid on
to tape in an analogue tape recorder.
 • Wave on the tape can be read and sent to a
   speaker to produce the sound.
 • Advantages of using analogue is better sound
   quality.
Digitisation
  • Digitisation - convert the sound into numbers
which can be stored on computer.
  • Advantages:
  • Provides clear sound comparable in quality to
    CDs.
  • No storage limits, 24/7 access.
  • Downloaded by anyone.
  • Multiple access
  • Historical data can be stored safely
DAB Digital Radio
 • Signal always gets through no matter what comes
   between your radio and transmitter.
 • Can 'Rewind radio', record programmes in real time or
set a timer, download audio and data.
 • List by station name
 • Unaffected by pirate radio
 • LCD Screen
 • How it works: Two technologies combine.
Mp3 Recorder
 • MP3 device - used to record voice of the public.
   Can be played back.
 • Produces an audio file format. Data can be
stored and turned into a Mp3 and also edited on
   “Audacity”.
 • I’ve also used the Iphone sound
   recorder to record
Minimisation and Portability

  • Minimisation – Reducing the size of
technology to the smallest size possible.
  • Portability – radio can be heard in car, from a
phone or objects such as a pen.
Technological Convergence and Web 2.0
  • Different technological systems to evolve
    towards performing similar tasks.
  • Web 2.0 – interacting with world wide web.
  • E.g. Social networking sites such as Facebook
and MySpace, blogs, video sharing sites and
    many more.

Editor's Notes

  1. We have challenged the conventions of a newscast in number ways. Instead of a posh, British accent; we have tried to make it make it sound less serious by changing the tone of our voice and by using humour which added enthusiasm. We’ve also used slang and made it sound as though we were having a conversation rather than reading off a strict script. Also, we have added music at the background of the news stories, this takes away the real seriousness away as our audience (15-22 years old) would more likely listen to it as it wont drag on and will sound interesting.
  2. We have followed many of the conventions by using presenters and hosts and read headlines at the beginning of the show. Another convention we’ve followed is newscasts usually start off with serious news then leads to softer news like entertainment. We have also made a Facebook page for our radio station and asked polling questions and put up celebrity news like most websites.
  3. In the story about routes after secondary school, School leavers in the east-endare represented as being unsure about their future as the story suggests sense of confusion about where to go and what to do. They are also portrayed as being financially challenged because the story tells us that a significant number cannot afford to go to university.
  4. Here young people are shown as being caring and connected to the adults who work with them – in this case the teacher who died. They are also represented as fun-loving people who enjoy entertainment as we hear a student excitedly describing the performances after school. Teachers do not fit the stereotype of boring and stiff as the student also informs the audience that her male teacher dresses up as a woman to perform on stage for the students.
  5. The film review story reinforces the representation of young people as being fun lovers who are driven entertainment.
  6. The final story shows male entertainers as playboys and women bashers who always get their way because they are male and rich. It shows young people and women as being gullible because voxpop participants fall for his charms and apologies in the same way that Rihanna forgives him after being battered.
  7. Choice 96.9 began as an independent company in March 1990, broadcasting from studios in Brixton. It was Britain’s first 24 hour black music radio station with a licence, covering South London.
  8. The target audience for Choice Fm is 15- to 34-year-olds. This fits in well with our news cast as we also target towards the younger generation who go college/ training, work or are about to start college. Choice Fm mainly focus on RnB and HipHop music similarly, our news cast also includes HipHop beats as we believed this would be appropriate for teenagers as they are more interested in urban music. Choice FM uses laid back language which sounds as though they’re having a conversation rather than reading off a paper. It has a slow pace and humour and slang is often used which makes it appropriate for the target audience. We have also used humour and slang in our news cast which makes us different as it will engage our target audience to tune in and listen.
  9. The news that Choice Fm mainly use is celebrity news by HipHop or RnB artists. We also used news about an RnB/HipHop artist for our entertainment section.
  10. Our newscast is aimed at young people either in college or just leaving school. They are at least secondary school educated and they seek higher education. The audience are both male and female and their personality traits include a strong sense of determination, self-pride, and ambition for self improvement. They therefore fall into the psychographic group of Aspirers and succeeders. Their demographic is E- working class students who are either at school or working part-time. Their interests include entertainment, including music, film and fashion as well as celebrity lifestyle.
  11. We conducted a survey using SurveyMonkey to learn more about our audience. Our audience have voted for celebrity as their most preferred new story and we have taken that into consideration and put in 2 news stories to do with celebrities.
  12. Our audience prefer both formal and informal language, however we used informal language as it would suit our audience.
  13. The audience we tried to attract are aged between 16-20 years old. We thought of ways we could attract this age group, one way we did is by using informal language as it would make us different from other radio newscasts. We have also used HipHop/RnB music as ChoiceFM use this type of music and attract the same age group as us successfully. Teenagers are more likely to listen to urban songs and this will attract them. We have also tried our best to keep the stories short and snappy as teenagers are more likely to lose concentration and it can put them off. The first two stories are to do with school leavers and end of year shows, our audience that are just leaving school can relate to these stories. They will more likely to listen as it can advice them. The last two stories are to do with movies, we put in this story as we know teenagers socialize with friends by going cinemas and talk about new movies. This will attract them and they will know what movies are highly recommended. Also our audience can relate to the presenters as they are around the same age and shows that they can understand better and bring up important topics regarding them.
  14. Analogue was used before digital. Wave recorded or used in its original form. For example, a signal is taken from a microphone and laid on to tape in an analogue tape recorder. Wave from the microphone is an analogue wave so is the wave on the tape. That wave on the tape can be read and sent to a speaker to produce the sound. The advantages of using analogue is better sound quality. Compared to digital signals, analogue signals are of higher density.
  15. Digitisation is when you convert something into digital or numerical form. By digitising sound recordings we convert the sound into numbers which can be stored on computer. Collection of numbers represents the sound it a copy and we no longer need the magnetic tape to listen to the sound. The advantages is that itprovides clear sound comparable in quality to CDs. There are no physical limits for storage and also can be accessed whenever you want. Another advantage is that a single copy can be mounted on a server (most commonly a Web server), and this can be viewed and downloaded by a large numberof users, and from any location in the world using the appropriate access restrictions and technology. Further advantage is multiple and simultaneous access to the information and historical information can be stored and preserved for a long time and is less likely to be damaged or lost (back ups).
  16. DAB (digital audio broadcast)sends speech and songs through the air as strings of numbers. The signal always gets through no matter what comes between your radio and transmitter. DAB radio gives listeners access to lots more radio stations than FM and long wave. The functions are of a DAB radio is that it can 'Rewind radio', record programmes in real time or set a timer, download audio and data. Stations are listed by name so you don’t have to remember the frequencies. With some digital radios you can have stations listed in the order of those you listen to most, making them quicker to find. If you live in an area where there are lots of problems with pirate radio stations broadcasting on FM, digital radio may be worth considering. Currently, digital radio doesn't suffer from problems with pirate stations. A digital radio has a screen on the front that gives details of the programme you're listening to. Some stations broadcast the name of the song and artist you are listening to. Speech or sports stations often tell you the name of the show or the commentator. How it works: DAB works by combining two technologies to produce an efficient and reliable radio broadcast system (convergence).
  17. In our radio station, I used an MP3 device to record voice of the public. People can record their voice or other sounds then play it back.It produces an audio file format which is a file format for storing digital audio data on a computer system. This data can be stored uncompressed, or compressed to reduce the file size but still have the same quality of sound. This data was then edited on a software called “Audacity”, which allowed it to cut out parts of the audio so that I only have the parts of the clip I need to put in my radio station. I have also used the Iphone sound recorder to record the voice of the public.
  18. Technologies have been decreasing by size as years are going by for example, radios are getting smaller and smaller as their is now radios that can fit into your pocket. Technology has become portable, radio was only heard coming from a box, it has now modernised and can be heard anywhere for example, car, phone or objects like a pen.
  19. Technological convergence is when you take two or more separate pieces of technology like a phone or a camera and put them together to make a camera phone. More than two things together can make something technologically converged for example, the apple Iphone has the internet, music player, camera and phone elements to it. Web 2.0 is information sharing and the collaboration with world wide web, a Web 2.0 site allows users to interact and collaborate with each other.Examples of Web 2.0 include social networking sites, blogs, wikis, video sharing sites etc.
  20. The preliminary task has taught me news values and a journalist’s Code of Ethics. In the preliminary task I didn’t have much understanding about newscasts and the technologies I was using apart from Audacity. The preliminary task has helped me in many ways for the main task, as it helped me prepare by doing research on a Voxpop. It has also helped me focus on the audience and think about how I can attract our audience and make our newscast different. It’s helped me think of creative ways of making our newscast different from everyone else’s, we had to choose different sounds to put into our newscast in the studio. Our newscast was too long therefore we had to cut parts out and record again, audacity helped us do this as we had practiced in the preliminary task. For my news story I had to interview the public, this had helped me with my confidence and made me clear what are open and closed questions and also helped me write scripts.
