Editor's Notes

  1. Blab FM uses many typical conventions and forms. Most of the forms are not challenged or developed as it was not needed to get the topics across to the public. For example, the vox pops for unemployment, the outside broadcast or the interview are just traditional news forms. The conventions that we used is shown through the structure of our newscast which was from hard to soft news. Another convention that is used is the tone of voice and language which is very casual as standard English is used without any slang, this is suitable for both young adults and teenagers as it is not too informal. A way in which the newscast is developed is through music. Like all newscasts, Blab FM plays music in the background. However, it moves with the type of news. For example if the topic is hard news then the music has more intensity and if it is soft news then the music is more calm. A way in which we challenge the forms and conventions of a newscast is that the movie review is structured in a conversational manner. Rather than one person telling their point of view, the whole group shares their opinion. Also, interactivity is challenged through the use of blogging. Most radio stations do not use blogging as a method of interactivity therefore, it will be used in Blab FM
  2. This issue represents age group and class more strongly. This is because people who are 16 and over focus more on further education, as they are coming closer to applying and paying for their tuition. Class is represented as it affects the people who have the economical status. For example People who are working class will have more strain on getting their children to have access to higher education. However, the news may show young people as rebels as they are seen in a violent manner which accepts the stereotype that young people are violent and rebellious.  + --
  3. As the film is universal it does not have a specific representational group. However, it is most likely that people such as cinema goers and Harry Potter fans will listen to the review as it affects their opinion on whether they should watch the film.
  4. The Wanted, is most likely to attract young girls and teenagers. Glee is suitable for most ages however it is more likely that teenagers will be attracted. Both these topics have no social class barriers therefore, it is suitable for everyone. The Paralympics represents disabled people as it is a sport that they can take part in. It shows them challenging the stereotype as they are seen as strong and independent rather than helpless.
  5. Radio 1 is an ideal media institution because it shares the same target audience that Blab FM wishes to aim for: a unisex, group of people that are aged between 16-25. They touch up on issues that are related to this age group which includes music, news and gossip. Blab FM wants to include all types of people therefore, it is targeting people of all ethnic groups and races, this is similar to what Radio 1 aims to do.Another, feature that radio 1 has is the consistent theme of a young and casual atmosphere, which attracts people of 16-25 yrs old. This is another similarity that Blab FM contains.
  6. Blab FM is for all genders and ethnicity’s. There are no social class barriers so it is suitable for most people. However, the only specification of Blab is the age group which is 16-25 yr olds.
  7. One of the questions that were Included in the survey was: what kind of stories would most likely engage listeners? As the results show that entertainment is most popular with the demographic that Blab FM is targeting. Therefore, Blab FM is certain to carry an entertainment story in its newscast .
  8. Another question that was featured in our survey was when the audience would like to listen/watch the news. Majority have picked the evening, so after school, college, work, etc. This means that it is most likely that the Blab FMs newscast would be allocated at that time.
  9. This survey shows that most people listen to radio through mobile phones. This means that we would take into consideration that Blab FM may be accessed through a mobile phone via frequency modulation. This takes part in the digital convergence.
  10. Blab FM attracts audience through many ways. First, it is allocated at 4-6pm, this is an appropriate time as it is when most people finish school or work in the age group between 16-25yrs, therefore people can listen to Blab while relaxing, winding down, etc. Another, way is through the accessibility of the broadcast, thus, it should be accessed through mobile phones, manual radio and the internet as most people use these platforms to listen to radio. Blab FM will allow interactivity between listeners and presenters via face book, email, text and blogging, so they can share their opinion like most young people like to do. Music that is popular among the target audience will be broadcasted. Also, the atmosphere of Blab FM is casual rather than formal so it can take part in the relaxing time after school/ work .
  11. These are the platforms that are used through the duration of the production of the media product. Audacity was used to record voice while garage band was used to create music and jingles. Voice recording equipments were explored: microphones, pop filters.
  12. Both analogue and digital are a means of producing and listening to media. A brief of both is that analogue is an older form of technology while digital is a modern way of producing and listening to media.
  13. These equipment are all products of convergence. Several technological platforms and media work together. For example, the mobile phone can be used to phone people but is also a portable radio. Game stations such as Xbox and Play station now have access to internet so radio can be listened through them also podcasts can be downloaded into them. Television has radio channels. Laptops and computers can be connected to the internet, people can listen to radio stations through the internet on websites and podcasts can be downloaded. IPods and IPhones have iTunes so podcasts can be downloaded
  14. Through the duration of time between the preliminary task and the main task, research and planning is important. Organising is relevant all throughout from the topics researched by each member, scripting the newscast to deciding on the genre of the radio station. The structure of the news comes under the research and planning category as members must conclude the length of the newscast: long enough to fit information in but short enough as to not bore the listener. Is it standard English as people may not understand slang wordsAlso, the structure of the newscast itself so which news is most newsworthy would be brought forward and anything that is ‘soft’ will be at the end.
  15. There are laws that regulate the standards and ethics that Journalists practice. Therefore, a Code Of Conduct was produced which insists that all Journalists maintain. These ethics have been used while obtaining and producing the newscast.
  16. These news values are the few that affect local news the most.Threshold is used in the students riot and unemployment news topics, both stories also contain negativity, timelessness and human interest.Another, is ear conflict, which is events that feature conflict. The students riot may come under this category as it was a conflict between the people and the government. The review contains timelessness and prominence as the Harry Potter film was out recently. Sports and entertainment are more about prominence and timelessness as the coverage of celebrities is always in the public eye. Most of these stories come under proximity as this is a local newscast. Therefore, it most of the items are relevant to the region.
  17. There are the microphone related products that we have come across: Directional and omni-directional, pop filtersGarage band was used. Garage band is a software that can be found in apple products. It helps create music or podcasts. Another software that was used was audacity whichcan be used to record and edit sound. DAB is a Digital Audio Broadcasting. It is digital radio technology for broadcasting radio stations. The internet is the biggest and most successful development of technology. It can be used to listen to existing radio stations but also, it allows people to become journalists and upload their own broadcasts, therefore, they can talk about local news etc.
  18. These are two types of microphones that have been used from the preliminary task to the main task. As the omnidirectional microphone can record sounds from different directions it is more suitable for outside broadcasts as it allows the presenter to speak but also captures the background sound, it can also be used for interviews and voxpops. AS a directional microphone can record sound from one direction it is good for recording in the studio where there is one presenter.Pop filters can be used anywhere as they are used to prevent a popping sound however it is ideal for a recording studio
  19. These are a few of the key things that I have learned throughout this course as a media practitioner.
