How to gather, write and present news
Teenagers and their use of radio
How to use music software in a better way
We used many conventions in our newscast that are found on local newscasts on real radio stations. We had a theme music and an introduction to our show when we introduced the presenters. This is something that is always found on newscasts. We also used headlines as all radio shows have headlines after their introduction to tell the audience the stories they will be covering on the show. Many newscasts use vox pops, interviews and outside broadcasts to support the story that they are covering. In our newscast we all used these coventions to give evident for the stories we presented to our audience. We also used interactivity in our newscast. Many radio stations have a process where the audience can call up, send a text or visit the radio stations website and take part in things like competitions etc. We also done something similar where we asked our audience to go onto our survey monkey interactive page and fill out a survey on what path school leavers are deciding to take after leaving school.
We definitely developed our newscast when we used theme music and background music in general. Radio shows always have a theme music which we also had as well however, we developed this and changed it depending on the story that we were covering. We had a theme music right at the start of our show and background music for the first story that we covered but, when we got to the second story we decided not to have any music at all in the background as the story was about something very serious. Therefore, we decided it would be best to not have to music in the background to keep the seriousness of the story and to also keep the audience aware of the seriousness. Furthermore, when we then moved onto our celebrity story, we decided to have upbeat and exciting music in the background as we were covering the story of singers Rihanna and Chris Brown. We first wanted to use one of Chris Browns actual song in the background however, we could not do so as that would be breaking rules and would be classified as copyright. We also developed the style of our introduction. We figured that to make our newscast appeal to our target audience, we need to make sure that the introduction was catchy and engages the audience right from the start therefore, we used upbeat music and made the language semi-formal so that our target audience can relate to it.
We challenged the use of interactivity slightly as we set up a facebook page for our young audience where they can give their views and ideas about one of our celebrity stories. Radio shows do not usually have a facebook page however, we decided to do this as our target audience are young people and teenagers and teenagers use facebook a lot. This makes it convenient and easier for us and them to get interactive with our newscast. In addition, we decided to have two presenters for our newscast whereas other newscasts would have one single presenter. We thought this would be a good idea if we showed the interaction between two presenters as it would be another way to keep our audiences engaged. A final thing we challenged was that we did not include a weather forecast or any information about weather as we did not find this important and we thought it wasn’t something that would interest our audience.
Our media product tells us a number of things about teenagers. Our first story which was about what school leavers are deciding to do next shows that young people are concerned about their future and what they want to do after leaving school. It shows that they want to make the right choice for themselves even if they decide not to carry on with further education. The second story which was about the death of a teacher on a school trip which made schools rethink about trips and celebrate their end of term in a different way, shows that teachers are willing to take dress up and entertain their students in a unique way, making sure that students enjoy their end of term and still get the chance to celebrate. Our third story about the latest movies that were out and the reviews on them shows that teenagers like to socialise by going out and watching films and they are fun-loving and enjoy entertainment. The final story about celebrities Chris Brown and Rihanna portrays that teenagers have a great interest in knowing about their favourite celebrities and what is going on in their personal lives. Also, it shows that male entertainers are aggressive and not as nice as they seem on screen. Hence, it shows that women are emotionally weak and vulnerable and public fans are gullible and they forget and forgive easily.
Choice Fm is an multi-award winning radio station which is a place for listeners to discover music, interact with DJ’s and other young people where 2.179 million tune in every week. Choice FM’s style of music, such as Hip Hop and music by many famous artists like Rihanna, Chris Brown etc appeal to the younger audience which is what makes them want to tune into the radio station. The radio station also offers celebrity news and gossip which is something young people enjoy listening to. Hence, why we also decided to include gossip in our newscast. Choice FM are also a radio station who are renowned for championing new talent and they were also responsible for breaking artists like Usher in the UK. Another reason why younger audience can engage with this particular radio station more is because they run many events and competitions which young people could take part in. This makes young people more interactive with the radio station and allows them to enjoy radio in a greater way.
We have decided that the target audience for our media product would be the younger audience therefore, teenagers aged from 13-20yrs. The reason for us choosing this target audience is because we feel that the style, content, language etc that we use in our radio show would appeal to them. We also said that they would be from a working class background as working class people would tune into radio shows of this style. There is no target at a specific gender for our product as we feel that both genders can easily relate, understand and enjoy our concepts. We have also set no specific ethnicity for our product as we believe that this group of local young people in society all share the same taste and interest regardless of their ethnicity. Another reason we have chosen teenagers as our audience is because we think that we would be able to deliver to them more precisely and effectively than any other group in society as we can relate to them and understand what they want.
We decided to use semi-formal language for our newscast as this was one way for us to engage our target audience. Young people like things according to their style of language so they can relate to it and understand it better. If we had used formal language instead of semi-formal, it wouldn’t appeal to them as they may have found it boring and get put off therefore, we used words like “guys” and “what's up” as a way of relating to the audience and engaging them to our newscast. Considering the type of audience we were targeting at, we had to make sure that the content of the news stories we present had to be something they could relate to. The first story we decided to include was one about 16 year olds educational choices after leaving school. This was included as it was something that young people can relate to and perhaps they have experienced already or will be experiencing. It helped to give them ideas and information on this issue and gave them tips that they could think about. Our second story was one about the death of a school teacher on a school trip and how a local school has found an alternative to trips by having teachers perform for them, to celebrate their end of term. This is something that young people would want to know about as relates to what is happening in one of their local schools hence, teenagers would be interested in this as it is not everyday they get to hear about teachers dressing up and performing for their students to entertain them. We talked about latest movie releases and got reviews from people on the latest movies that were out. We already knew that teenagers like to socialise a lot and go out to places the like Cinema’s with their friends therefore, we decided it would be helpful for teenagers if we provided them with reviews on the latest movies that were released before they actually go to watch them. Our final story was a celebrity gossip story where we talked about singers Chris Brown and Rihanna. We figured that this would be an excellent gossip story about these two celebrities as news about their personal issue is everywhere and the public are very curious to know about them. Also, many young people are huge fans of these singers therefore, we thought it was vital to include such content about them in our newscast. This adds onto the format of our newscast as we decided to have a vox pop where we asked people to give their opinions on Chris Brown and Rihanna. We also used an interview and outside broadcast to show the audience that we are getting publics views and opinions on the issues that we are discussing.
Another way that we attracted the audience was by using interactivity to get the audience to take part and be included with the show. We set up a facebook page for our audiences where they could discuss their thoughts and opinions on the issues and stories that we spoke about in the broadcast. As more and more young people use facebook in their daily lives, we thought this would be an easy yet an effective way for them to get involved with Deuce FM. We also decided to keep the length of our stories as short as possible and we thought that the shorter the story is, the better for the audience. We knew that young people can get bored and distracted very easily therefore, we decided to keep our stories short and get to the point quickly whilst the audience were still engaged. From research that we had conducted, we found out that young people like presenters which kept a balance of seriousness, a little laid-back and funny hence, why we made sure that our chosen presenters had these qualities. We made sure that our presenters were serious when it came to talking about the serious stories, such as the one about the death of a school teacher and the story about 16 year olds education choices. Moreover, we decided to keep a bit of humour when it came to the stories about movie releases and celebrity gossip to also keep the atmosphere light towards the end.
Throughout this process I have learnt many new things about technology. This includes things such as: analogue and digital radio, technological/media convergence, technological things about the music studio, portability and music software's such as Audacity and Garage band. I have learnt how the development of radio and other digital mediums have changed from analogue to digital all the time allowing better access for people. Hence, I have learnt thet
One of the first things I have learnt whilst constructing this product, is that digitisation is the process of scanning records and archives to produce things like digital images. I have also learnt how people have changed from using analogue radio to digital radio as digital delivers better quality without any noise or interference.
Digital radio systems such as DAB or digital radio that is delivered via digital satellite or Freeview Digital radio now has pause and rewind features to put us in control of what we are listening to and therefore, it has been designed in a way to fit in with our lives. Moreover, features of advanced DAB now enables us to record our favourite programmes when we are unable to listen to it. This allows us to listen to the programme later on in our own convenience and comfort.
I have learnt that technological/ media convergence is the development of new technologies. During the early stages when technology was delivered, it enabled it to cover one task at a time. However the change in technology now enables it to cover many tasks at once. An example of this is that in the first stages of technology, music could only be played on a disc player and radio could only be accessed through a radio device however, now technology has developed in a way that one device can handle many formats of entertainment. Mobile phones, were first designed for voice calling an texting but now you can use them for internet access, playing music, taking pictures, videos and even accessing the radio.
Now we do not have to listen to the radio just via a radio player. Radio had become more portable and compatible allowing it to be easily accessed at any time. We are now able to listen to the radio when we are on-the-go for example when we are in the car and on our mobile phones and mp3 players. The compatibility of radio has made it easier for it to be carried around by people. Mobile phones are becoming sleeker and lighter allow for the device to be carried around more easily without trouble.
Whilst constructing this product, I had to use many software and programmes to help record and upload things. I used programmes such as Audacity and Garage band where I experimented putting sound clips together so I could gain experience and learn how to use it when it came to recording the actual thing. This helped me with my work as now I know how to use the programmes and I can put together my sounds which I would like to include in my news story.
Unlike television, the technology of radio is the only medium that allows multi-tasking whilst you are still engaged with any other activity you are doing. People can be listening to the radio and be doing household chores like ironing or cooking which is something you cannot do whilst watching tv. This is one way that it has encouraged more people to listen to the radio as it is more compatible with everyday life and activities.
The digital TV switchover is the process of turning off the UK's analogue TV signal and replacing it with a digital signal. In April 2012 TV has become digital. The existing analogue TV signal has beenswitched off and replaced with a new, stronger digital TV signal. It will mean that almost everyone will be able to receive digital TV through an aerial (Freeview). Digital TV also uses less broadcast space which means that after switchover, there will be more room for new services such as wireless broadband, local TV and High Definition Television (HDTV).
Since the preliminary task I have come across and learnt many new things. From one of the first tasks we done, I learnt about the history of radio, how radio was first discovered and how effectively it has been developed throughout time till todays stage. In addition to this, I have learnt what the twelve different news values are and that the conventions of News are things that are always there in a News report. I also learnt about ethics of journalism. Furthermore, I have learnt new things about the music studio like the equipment they use, the cost of equipment's, how to record things etc. During this media task, I have also learnt how radio shows really work and how you have to prepare them and organise them for it to run well. I have learnt that Vox’s Pops and Outside broadcasts are used in a radio show to make it more interesting and to show the audience that background research has been done on the news they are being offered. I learnt and practised how to gather, write and present news in the correct way. I also learnt how teenagers use radio and how the things they want in radio is different from the other social groups choices. A final thing I have improved on is on my skills of using audacity and garage band. I can now use these music software's much better and I fully understand how they work.
