Editor's Notes
Our radio broadcast mostly followed conventions of traditional radio broadcasts. It includes an interview which is frequently used in radio stations, such as in the chrismoyles show, when singer Adele had an interview with a ‘fake adele’, the link shown will direct you to that interview. Another way we used conventions is by telling the audience were they can contact someone for more information, in our case we gave Nahimul (Young mayor’s) email address. We used the technique vox-pop for the EMA story. The next story is regarding the x factor final 3, for this story we created a survey on survey monkey asking our target audience who they think will win the x factor and who they want to win. We generated this survey via hotmail, facebook and word of mouth. We used jingles as a pose to the x factor theme tune. When creating our Radio broadcast we intended on using the x factor theme tune however we realised that we do not have the copy rights thus using the theme tune would be breaking the law. We had an inside reporter and an outside reporter. Ruma was the inside reporter, she began speaking and introduced herself so that the audience know who is speaking. As I was the outside reporter, Ruma introduced me before I began to speak so that the audience are aware of the transition to and from studio. The music used appeals so our target audience, all radio stations use certain music which appeals to their audience.
However we developed conventions of radio broadcasts by the type of music we used and the way in which we used it. Usually, radio broadcasts use music specific to their radio station such as their own jingle. Or, some radio stations such as BBC 1 which play actual songs one after another. When the songs are beginning, the reporters introduce the song. However in our broadcast we used a very contemporary piece of music which fades in and stays in the background whilst inside reporter (Ruma) is still speaking. This helps to keep the audience gripped and not get bored. We challenged conventions by putting a weather report in the middle of our broadcast. Usually weather reports go at the end, however we decided to try something new in order to show the audience that talk fm is a fresh station with new ideas. Also, radio broadcasts don’t use a variety of stories. For example, Kiss Fm only play’s music and is for entertainment only. However our broadcast provides both news and entertainment. We done an interactive vote to get audience involved, where as most radio station would probably call people to talk live to get opinions. Lastly, we challenged conventions by having only 2 reporter, when usually radio broadcasts consist of many reporters (inside and out).
Our radio broadcast represents student groups. For example, the story on EMA affects college students all over the capital, thus their interests and thoughts are being represented within this story, as there are vox pops of how some students think the EMA scheme could be improved. Teenagers are represented, as the YOUNG MAYOR is a teenager himself, not only that but he speaks about his fellow teenagers in his interview with Ruma. Past and current GCSE students are represented as I done an outside broadcast in a secondary school when students were recieving their GCSE results. It affects current students about to take their GCSE as they will be able to see that results are getting better, thus they will have more courage and believe in themselves. All our stories show young people being involved and aware about what is happening within society and being alert of several opportunities available. It also shows that the majority of young people are very ambitious and want to do well in their studies in order to do well and become something.
Choice FM is on-air as London's Choice, it is a brand used by the UK’s biggest radio company. It is known for its urban music and is also broadcasted through DAB digital radio, Sky, Talk Talk TV, virgin media and also on the internet. Like talkfm choice fm started out as an independent company in March 1990. It was the first radio station to air urban rap music. Choice Fm reaches 543,000 listeners in London according to rajar.co.uk. This shows how popular the radio station is and also states that many people tune in for Choice FM.
There are some differences between choice fm and Talk fm. Choice FM target audience from 15-25 for both boys and girls whilst has a target audience from ages between 15-21 and aimed mainly at girls. So this means they have a wider field of audience rather than our show which only targets a specific sex rather than both sexes.Choice FM should use our radio news cast as both our target audiences are very similar which would mean that both radio stations have the same type of urban music. We also both use semi-formal language due to our target audience again so that they understand the stories without getting bored. Choice FM interact with their audience by getting them involved to suggest any songs they would like to listen to, where as Talk FM we used interactivity to find out who is the most popular out of the final 3 candidates in the X-Factor.We also got our classmates to review our radio newscast and give us feedback, In our radio newscast, our EMA Vox Pop recording was over 30 seconds. To improve this, We cut the clip and reduced 30 seconds to roughly 16 seconds.
Talk Fm is directed at teenagers from the age of 15 up to the ages of 21. We aim for an audience of females and males. The reason for this is due to the fact that the stories which talk fm would be covering would relate to this group. An example of one of these stories is the EMA story, this affects most college students in the capital. However, we aim to put at least one story in each 5 minute broadcast for entertainment, such as the X-factor final 3. This will ensure a variety of topics available and will appeal to a larger group of people.
We attracted our chosen audience using a variety of techniques. Firstly, the choice of stories we used play a part in attracting our audience. We chose stories which our audience can personally relate to. We (as the presenters) also fit into the target audience. This means that our audience will feel comfortable in listening to our broadcasts and are likely to want to tune in frequently. The language used is semi-formal. Not too formal, yet not made unprofessional by using informal language. The music we used is very contemporary, thus the audience will be attracted to the music and will enjoy the broadcasts more. The broadcast itself starts of very dramatically. A slight jingle builds up to the main club-type music. This will be likely to appeal to our audience as it appeals to us – We know what our age group want! Our broadcast has a mixture of vox pops, outside broadcasts, use of music, speech and weather reports. This variety ensures that our broadcast doesnt get boring! Lastly, we created quizzes online to allow our audience to get involved with the talk fm broadcast. We used survey monkey to ask whether people prefer listening to the radio for entertainment or news purposes. I put the results from one of the questions into a pie chart. Even though the majority prefer entertainment, they also listen to the radio for news. This helped us to decide exactly what kind of stories to use. We distributed the survey via hotmail, facebook and word of mouth.
Digitization has come a long way, before analogue was used where it was difficult to edit and also was a long process. For example if a person had recorded a voice using a cassette, it would take a while to edit as the tape will need to be physically cut and then be edited. The tape will then be joined together using a splicing tape so that the cassette is not damaged and so the unwanted recording is removed. There are some disadvantages and advantagesanologue. Firstly, the Advantages. The equipment used is less complicated than digital radio as it takes less time. It is also cheaper, and In some conditions, analogue radio can still be used to communicate as there will be a received signal. However, the Disadvantages are as follows.-Voice may not be clear due to the interference because of the environments causing white noise. As analogue users move away from the transmitter signal decreases and the noise increases.Anologue also has Less functions compared to digital radio, also Only one conversation occurs in each analogue channel.
Digitization is the process of converting information into a digital format. In this format, information is organized into separate sections of data. This allows computers and many devices with computing ability to view any recordings. —Text and images can be digitized where a scanner takes an image or a text and converts it to an image file, such as a bitmap . Digitizing information makes it easier to preserve, access, and share. For example, a historical document may only be accessible to people who visit its location, but if the document is digitized, it can be made available to people worldwide by using the internet. one of The advantages of digitization is that it is a Quick process whichSaves time. More production is done (proliferation) It is Small and portable and so it easy to carry around. Also,It includes many uses e.g. a mobile phone can be used for interacting as well as listening to music. Digital has very Good signal and is More computerised and modern.Thedisdvantages are that it has a high cost, digital items Need to be charged it constantly as the charge does not stay for a long time.
Modern technologies are all coming together. It means that electronic devices are created with many uses, for example a mobile phone can be used for data, voice, music, videos, communication and all entertainment is driving consumer products to convergence. This allows users to hold small objects which include several activities which suits there needs. It is also computerised and easy to use. Internet as well as radio can be viewed together on a technology. For example a mobile phone includes interacting, games, radio, internet, music and others in a small device which allows users to carry and also be entertained at all times.
In the progression from the preliminary task to the main task, we have learnt many things. For example, we learnt how technology has affected the radio industry. The improvements made in technology allow better quality radio broadcasts. It takes less time and effort to create broadcasts. The introduction of convergence allows people to consume radio on many devices such as mobile phones which allow listening to the radio on the move. The fact that it is easy to listen to means more people will use the radio for example on long drives.
We have also learnt that news is any kind of information fed to the public regarding recent events and happenings. News is consumed for two main reasons, finding out things you NEED to and WANT to know. We also learnt about what journalists are and aren’t allowed to do. They are not allowed to lie, give out personal information as shown in the list.
We also learnt how to conduct the process of making a radio broadcast. This includes thinking of your target audience, coming up with relative stories which will appeal to them. Carrying out vox pops and interviews in order to make it interesting. We learnt how to use audacity and got a chance to learn which types of equipment are used in the making of a radio station. For more information go to our blogs...
We also learnt the affect of music being too loud where the stories cannot be heard and so music needs to be much quieter so that stories are very clear to understand. We have also learnt to use different technologies to make our radio station i.e. we used omni-directional microphone to capture sound from different direction for the outside broadcast.GROUP WORK In our group we only had two people, in comparison to other groups where they had four in their group.. However this was an advantage in a way that we did not have to chase after one another and just separated tasks between both of us.
