Gautama Buddha lived from 563 to 483 BC in ancient India and founded Buddhism. He taught that life is full of suffering caused by desire, and that one can be liberated from this cycle of suffering through following the Eightfold Path of right understanding, intention, speech, action, livelihood, effort, mindfulness, and concentration. Key Buddhist teachings include the Four Noble Truths about the nature of suffering and its cessation, the Three Universal Truths about cause and effect, and taking refuge in the Three Jewels of the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha. Buddha preached for 45 years before reaching parinirvana at the age of 80, leaving his teachings as the guide for followers.
