Nicholas Negroponte was working with the Minister of Defense in Colombia to distribute laptop computers to children through the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) initiative. The Minister of Defense saw the program as a strategic issue that could help connect remote communities and give children access to information that could improve their lives and opportunities. Negroponte discussed how over 3,000 laptops had already been distributed in Colombia, and how the program had expanded to other countries where ministers of various governments, including finance, saw benefits in educating and empowering children.
